Kiss the Girls is the prequel to Along Came a Spider- the well-publicised movie, also starring Morgan Freeman released a few months back. I haven't seen ACaS yet so don't know how much of a prequel it is. Both movies were originally written by James Patterson. Who I've never heard of. I'm full of helpful information aren't I? Ooh but there is a dooyoo category for him if you're really intrigued.
Morgan Freeman is an amazing actor. Don't believe me? What do I care? But just take a look at his credits and you'll see he's a man of discerning taste. The Shawshank Redemption, Se7en, Driving Miss Daisy- hey the man was even the star of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. (But why is it that Americans can't get it into their tiny minds that Robin Hood was meant to be ENGLISH? First Costner, now there's some stupid tacky Xena-style series of it on channel 5 where him and Marion are Yanks. Excuse the Seinfeld but What's that all about? It really does my head in. Hmmm, anyway I digress. Shocking I know) Good old Morgie always seems to subtly steal the show in all his flicks, regardless of the quality of the surrounding cast.
Kiss the Girls is a bit of a psychological thrillery type jobby, similar in a lot of ways to Se7en. Freeman stars as Dr Alex Cross, a detective forensic psychologist from DC. His brother's family get some bad news- Cross' niece away in Durham (not the one in England you fool- Americans have never even *heard* of the real Durham) at University has recently gone missing and the Police are desperately searching for clues- in vain. Cross of course leaps at the chance to do a bit of sight seeing down in North Carolina and maybe kill two girls with one stone by saving his niece too if he gets the time. Something interesting here- well for the young hysterical generation anyway- as the camera pans around the family living room we see that another of Cross' nieces is none other than Tatyana Ali: aka Ashley Banks from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Now if you follow that logic through, that means he must be (probably) Will Smith's uncle too. How's that for irrelevance?
Cross arrives in NC and despite being told to keep his nose out of it by the local Police Chief (this guy was in Red Dwarf one time- who else was in Red Dwarf? Danny John-Jules: Barrington in Maid Marion! Also look out for one of the deputies who was Robin Hood Man in Tights. He was a far better Robin Hood. Put on an accent and everything) he fairly obviously does the exact opposite. For some reason the police don't actually seem to mind his intrusion onto their patch though- fairly strange I thought considering the usual response of Police in movies like this. I guess it must be cos they're so darn incompetent. So it turns out that what the police do know is that some sicko weird guy is kidnapping random intelligent pretty girls- they just don't have much to go on. I thought that was most peoples main source of entertainment anyway these days....
In his (could be a her I suppose) quest for tougher, smarter conquests, the kidnapper takes on Dr Kate McTiernan- Ashley Judd- who also happens to be a kickboxer. A handy skill if you've got it. Not as good as invisibility, particularly in this situation, but useful nonetheless. After a coupla days captivity, Dr Kate breaks loose and makes it back into town-although unfortunately for both the remaining girls and the police she can't remember where the hideout was. She and Dr Alex embark on their mission to do whatever it is they have to and I'm not telling you any more story.
It's a good movie. The plot seems fairly reasonable with only very few glitches. I felt that it always threatened to explode into a really excellent movie but never managed to make it over that final, intangible hurdle that makes it unforgettable- in the Se7en league which I keep going on about. My only problem was that it kept making me think of a certain legend from Sherwood. The undeniable star is Morgan Freeman- looking a lot younger with his goatee and short hair I must say- but it's hardly his greatest performance ever. The rest of the cast are by no means bad at all but not exceptional.
Some of the Carolina forest locations are really beautiful- if you like forests- Robin Hood did- and gives it a bit of a Blair Witchy East Coast Forest feel. Dense trees, dark skies, small streams, that sort of thing. I thought that was cool anyway. I would tell you what I thought about the films score and soundtrack except I can't honestly remember anything about them. So read into that what you will. What a strange grammatical structure that has. *Got* to stop thinking (typing?) out loud.

If you like Crime thrillers, this should be for you. You don't cotton on to the bad guy early on, there's a few twists and everything all works out nicely in the end except for the few pounds you've just put on while munching your way through a rather large bag of peanuts and half a bottle of Dr Pepper. Just have to take up something active to work it off. Maybe kickboxing. Or forensic psychology. Or archery. What???

Young women are being kidnapped in the university town of Durham, North Carolina. Eight have been taken in the last few weeks, and the police haven’t got a single clue to go on. The last one to be abducted, four days earlier, was a music student at the university. Her name was Naomi Cross.
In Washington D.C., her uncle, Alex Cross, is a forensic psychologist. When he hears the news, he heads straight for the North Carolina town to save her the way ... ...head. But when he arrives, he learns that the situation has got a whole lot worse. The police have just discovered the body of one of the girls.
Battered, raped and murdered, this is the second body the police have found, and as hope begins to fade for the other girls, the race is on to try and save them.
Meanwhile, Doctor Kate McTiernan goes about her everyday life, saving children’s lives and working out at her kick-boxing class, blissfully unaware ...

Plot

The film starts off rather spookily with 'Casanova' talking about how he loves all the girls he kidnaps. The music is quite eerie, the titles credits are running over the screen and I feel ... ...Once the introduction is over we cut to Alex Cross training some young kids at the boxing gym. It gives the impression that he is a friendly cop, putting something back into the community. He Pager beeps & he sets of to a crime scene in a Porsche. Cross is also a character in ' Along came a spider', another film base on a Patterson novel (which I haven't read). I get the impression that he has made a lot of money from writing some sort of psychology ...

Advantages: Fantastic storyline thats different for a thiller. Disadvantages: none
As a massive James Patterson fan i watched this film with some resevations. I am happy to say any worries i had about the adaptation where unfounded. The film does appear different from the book, not because there are any chapters missing or plot changes but bacuase the cast where not as i imagined. for that reason the film stands on it's own. you don't have to have read the book to enjoy the storyline.
The plot has plenty of twists that keep you ...

DVD Description
In KISS THE GIRLS, a North Carolina police detective Dr. Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman) tracks an elusive psychopath whose modus operandi is not necessarily killing the young women he abducts but "collecting" them as trophies. Unfortunately, his quarry includes the detective's own law-student niece, so his race against time, with the help of a no-nonsense medical intern Dr. Kate McTiernan (Ashley Judd) who escaped the "collection," is all the more desperate. The film is a spare, by-the-numbers thriller, based on the series of novels by James Patterson.
