Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton) and 'Lola' (Chiwetel Ejiofor) star in this very entertaining hit film.
Okay so the story is a little weak - son gets left his father's shoe-making factory and decides that penny loafers are out, and thigh-high stiletto boots for transvestites are in. Surprsingly though, the directors have managed to squeeze a lot of entertainment out of the story.
The opening scene is by far my favourite moment of the film. We see a little girl (?) sitting on a bench swinging her legs and staring forlornly at her boring, run of the mill school shoes. Next thing we know, she's only gone and strapped on a pair of very clunky, very funky stiletto heels. She then performs a little dance up and down a seaside promenade until she gets grabbed by the ear by her father whose gruff scolding revals that 'she' is actually a boy.
The film unravels slowly at the beginning with the introduction of Charlie's fiancee, Nicola (played by Jemima Rooper who you may remember as Nicky from 'As If', and who you may well want to punch). They are finally shacking up together in London and getting ready for married life when the news comes that Charlie's father has died.
Nicola's interest in Charlie rapidly fades as he gets more and more involved in saving his father's business. Meanwhile, Charlie is growing rather fond of one of his employees, Lauren (Sarah Jane Potts) as they battle together for the plight of the man/woman and his/her love for stiletto boots with weight-displacing iron rods in the heels.
I'll stop before I reveal too much but I thoroughly recommend this film for a lighthearted giggle. If you've seen Chiwetel Ejiofor in anything else, you'll be blown away by his performance in Kinky Boots. He is so fabulously dahling. Joel Edgerton is pleasingly diffident (and rather easy on the eye too) but you may find yourself wanting to slap some sense into him at certain points.
Extra DVD features:
Audio commentary by director Julian Jarrold with cast members Joel Edgerton, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sarah-Jane Potts Four deleted scenes with optional director's commentary The Real Kinky Boots Factory featurette Journey Of A Brogue featurette
Enjoy!
