DVD Description
The murder of his brother has left Jake moody and frustrated. The killer was a martial arts champion who is now asking for volunteers to star in his new kickboxing movie. Jake decides to take him up on his invitation.
Advantages: covers a variety of fighting styles, ideal for MMA fans Disadvantages: not enough of muhammad ali even though he is on cover, very cheaply made
...The USP of this DVD is Muhammad Ali taking the best martial artist to school. I was disappointed that they only showed 1 minute of the early rounds that Ali lost. they decided to skip the other 11 rounds when he proved why boxing is the greatest sport on earth.
The rest of the DVD is filled with mediocre fighters that never made it and a host of unknown martial artists inlcuidng sume wrestlers and real life Vale Tudo wrestlers (not WWF). The problem is that they don't show anybody who isn't an OAp by now, and it was obviously made a few decades ago. That would be alright if they had inlcuded legends, but instead they profile people that didn't quite make it. very very poorly researched.
The DVD has been made on a budget and it shows alot, but doesn't quite go in to detail about explaining the various ring sports such as kickboxing...

Advantages: Well choreographed fight scenes Disadvantages: The usual predictable JCVD storylines
...A good film for a beer filled saturday night in with the lads, this film has some remarkable similarities to Karate Kid with the master that gives the pupil an unconventional training regime. The fight scenes are well choreographed and get the watcher into the scene.
This movie gives a good look at the small village life of thailand, with some stunning locations and scenary. Although the film was made in 1989 it is a film that doesnt show it's age.
This, along with Universal Soldier has to be the top two films in anyones Jean Claude Van Damme film collection. Shame they had to ruin the series by producing more than one Kickboxer film.
A well recommended buy for all Jean Claude Van Damme and martial arts fans alike....

Advantages: Good fighting / training scenes Disadvantages: Predictable storyline, cheesy in parts
...JCVD films are one of those things that you either love or hate. This is one of Van Damme's earlier films and arguably one of the most memorable. Beautifully shot, with a decent storyline (he gets revenge for his brother who has been crippled by the local kick boxing champion, of course) - but that's not the reason Van Damme fans watch his movies. It's the fighting and the training scenes, and this film's got them in abundance. Great stuff.
The only reason I'm giving this an average rating is because the DVD is not very good. On my version at least there's only the standard theatrical trailer. No director's commentary, no behind the scenes, or any trivia. A shame, because this film is a classic in the eyes of its fans....
