As a fan of animated comedy, when King of the Hill first hit our screens back in 1997, I was keen to see how it ranked against the other animations (though only The Simpsons really stood out back then). If you haven't seen the show before, it focuses round the everyday happenings of the Hill family (comprising of father Hank, mother Peggy and only son Bobby) in and around the town of Arlen, Texas. The Hill's are your typical hillbilly family, who have hearts in the right places, but don't exactly pride themselves on their appearances and behaviour. Hank is arguably the main character of the show, and he is regularly seen (even in the opening titles) standing in the street with a can of beer, along with his friends Boomhauer, Bill, and Dale.
Hank works as a propane salesman in Arlen, and it would be fair to say, devotes his life to his work (and propane as a noble gas). He is also a fan of lawnmowers, like his pals, and loves American football. Though he is the equivalent of Homer Simpson, he is actually reasonably intelligent, and loves to work and spend time with his family, though he does have a tendency to get things wrong. Peggy is more erudite. She is a loving mother and an avid fan of Boggle, and would do anything to ensure that her family is all right. Bobby is a bog-standard 12 year old at school, who likes doing the sort of things that 12 year olds do, and is a bit too curious and often lands himself in trouble. He also seems to idolise Hank.
The first season introduces the main characters, and shows their basic traits and what they are like. The 3-disc DVD set contains all 13 episodes, over 50 deleted scenes, commentaries by the creators of the show on each episode, a behind-the-scenes featurette and much more. Episodes include Bobby becoming addicted to smoking due to Hank and Peggy's bad influences, Hank getting an irregularity problem down below and the whole town becoming aware of it, and Hank being accused of child abuse (this is the pilot episode).
Sadly, the only main problem I think is with the quality of the animation. It is perfectly watchable, and thoroughly enjoyable, but compared to the Simpsons, it's a bit bland and sketchy (ha). Also, at around £10 to £15 for the set, 13 episodes is a bit too few for my liking, though they are all funny enough to justify the price in their own right.
So to summarise, I would say that this first season of King of the Hill sets the standard for the following seasons, and provides hours of hilarious entertainment that everybody can connect with (except of course people aged less than 12, as it is certificated 12, though this is a mere guideline).

This series just doesn't do it for me... I've pretty much lost interest in animated series the likes of Simpsons, South Park and King of the Hill... nice review though. xx
