Max Steiner's score for Merian C. Cooper and Edgar Wallace's King Kong is rightfully ... more
considered a classic. Until the 1933 thriller, movie soundtracks were mere background accompaniment. But Steiner's grand, Wagnerian score--filled with crashing notes, dissonant chords, and plenty of thunder--gave King Kong a unique tension, influencing every action and adventure soundtrack to follow. A few years later, Steiner--RKO's musical director--would go on to score another pivotal soundtrack, Gone with the Wind. But this is where his soundtrack magic really began. Rhino's reissue treatment here is luxurious and gorgeous, with great sound remastering. Copious liner notes explain some of this soundtrack's magic: Audio engineer Murray Spivack mixed a tiger growl at forward and backward speeds to create Kong's trademark vocals; Steiner knew precisely when to silence his 46-player orchestra and let the sound effects take over; and the small ensemble were often forced to serve double duty on multiple instruments. Filled with sound effects and movie dialogue, this CD sounds more like a vintage radio show than a standard soundtrack. But its impact--even today--can be easily heard. Great stuff. --Jason Verlinde

KIng Kong is probably the most famous name in Hollywood. Not many film goers have not heard the name of the Giant Ape, but sightings have been a bit scarce on the big screen since the original 1933 Black and White production. I only saw this film once when I was young and I must say the impression was awesome. THere have been a few attempts to recreate the original on screen presence of a giant ape going beserk but none have really impressed. This Peter Jackson full screen colour remake is a spectacular visual display and is worth watching if you have no interest in the story just to see the scenery and special effects. The film is 3 hours long and more or less divided in 4 locations. The first is the opening scene in a music hall in New York where the action eventually returns to at the end. This is where the need for money and desire for wealth drives a party of adventurers to hire a ship and travel to a secret island for a secret rendevous. On the boat the purpose of the journey is gradually revealed and a tense atmosphere develops culminating in the arrival at Skull island in fog and gloom. Once the party arrive on skull island the action begins to unfold. King Kong can ocasionaly be heard in the background but his identity is not revealed until he takes the heroine captive at a sacrificial ceremony run by the islanders native inhabitants. This is a main feature of the plot and keeps the original storyline in place. From then on things go from bad to worse for the rescue party as they encounter various armies of monsters and creatures. The special effects are excellent as they battle there way around the island, being picked off one by one. If you like suspense this stuff will kepp you glued to the screen. Eventually after many adventurous scenes and many deaths the crew escape with King Kong and return to the music hall where it all began. This is where the most dramatic part of the film kicks in and the famous scenes of the ape going beserk in New York are played out before the fatal culmination at the Empire State Building. If you like action/adventure films this is a good solid 3 hours of it. The first half hour is a bit slow but this is used to introuduce the main characters and the plot, from then on it is non stop action.
Advantages: Graphics Disadvantages: Obviously can guess the story line
One of the biggest movies this year. Starts off very bleak and takes a while to get into but once the action starts you cant stop, and even thought it lasts 3 hours (2 hours, 59 mins) you are drawn into the movie. In my opinion one of the best action thrillers in a long while and was defiantly worth the price. It would be a great gift for anyone. When I first heard hat Jack Black was starring I thought it would spoil the movie due to him being a ... ...and no one could have filled his acting role. The main storyline is a about a legendry oversized gorilla captured on a treacherous island and brought to civilisation, where he faces the ultimate fight for survival, and falling in love with a girl who kidnapped when they (a film production going bust) try and film the beast to make money. One of the actors who is in love with the girl goes into the jungle to find her. This is when the action occurs. ...

Advantages: lots of action Disadvantages: too long and King Kong arrives after a while when the film begins.
...appearance of the massive beast, King Kong and I think it was totally useless to wait this long for the monster. A film is usually 1 hour and 30 minutes long but this movie had introduced King Kong like as if a movie had already ended. To be honest, a 2 hour film would be enough to watch but will viewers watch it film over 3 hours? I feel very sorry for the ones who watched it at the cinema! Nevertheless, I was thrilled at some points of the movie ... ...However, one thing that touched me about the film was when King Kong had shown love towards the women. It is like a relationship was evolving between them and at the end, I nearly went into tears after seeing the King Kong die after saving the women's life several times. ...

KING KONG is director Peter Jackson's sprawling, epic remake of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack's 1933 movie of the same name, and it sees a film crew travel to the mysterious Skull Island, picks up giant gorilla King Kong, and bring him back to 1930s New York City. Despite his origins as a low-budget filmmaker with a taste for the unsavoury side of life, Peter Jackson has turned into an event filmmaker someone who can conjure up a movie on a scale unlike anything we've seen before. Jackson expands on this basic premise by drawing on the jaw-dropping talents of his special effects team to satisfy his thirst for the grand spectacle. The movie posits Naomi Watts as Ann Darrow, the starry-eyed blonde beauty whom Kong falls for; Jack Black as Carl Denham, a low-rent Orson Welles look-alike who drags the crew to the island to make his movie; and Adrian Brody as Jack Driscoll, a hack playwright who battles Kong both physically and for Darrow's heart. As the men struggle against Kong and the lumbering dinosaurs of Skull Island, Andy Serkis, who made the character of Gollum so believable in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, steps in to form the facial features of the mighty gorilla, lending a real emotional sucker-punch to the scenes between Darrow and Kong. But it's the final third of the movie where Jackson really delivers; his 1930s New York is stunning, and when Kong breaks free from his shackles and stampedes on a lovelorn trek through the city, then iconically climbs the Empire State Building with his sweetheart, it's impossible to not be swept away by the sheer beauty and sadness of the moment. While its three-hour length may prove daunting to some, the payoff in Jackson's KING KONG is ultimately worth it, proving once again that he is a director of breathtaking vision.
