theatricality is wonderfully evident at every turn. It is an "authentic" performance, but William Christie has deftly changed orchestrations, added tambourines and other percussion, occasionally deepened the bass sound, and included a host of other "inauthentic" effects--and the result is a recording brimming with life. The "Cold Scene", to take one example, is a great piece of musical painting. The "Chorus of Cold People" features a much faster set of chattering teeth than John Eliot Gardiner's decidedly thawed-out version (on Erato), and involves shouts of frost-bitten pain from the choir. A wind machine also adds a deliciously cheesy touch. But it's not all larky: when subtlety is called for Christie shows himself as adept at delicate phrasing as he is at having fun. Of an excellent cast, special mention must go to Claron McFadden, (also the best Galatea on record) who sings her two arias superbly. --Warwick Thompson

This is a King Arthur you have probably never before contemplated - taken by the Romans to serve a 15 year term as a soldier when he was a mere lad.
After this opening the action and story starts with Arthur ( Clive Owen) and his band of Knights ( taken to serve as he was) returning home on the last day of their 15 years service. They are all battle weary and looking forward to their ongoing lives. Arthur himseld intends returning to live in Rome which he cosiders to be the centre of the civilised world, and where his mentor lives. He believes that all men are born free and none are born into serfdom, teachings handed down to him by his mentor and which are to be at the heart of the major action of the film.
On their returning day they are forced into one last task before their freedom will be given which necessitates them travelling North into invading Saxon territoy to rescue a Roman family who have strong political links to Rome.
This task coincides with Rome's decision to pull their troops out of England, leaving the natives exposed to the onslaught of the savage Saxons, led by Cerdic (Stellan Skarsgard). Arthur finds himself suddenly out of step with the Roman view and with the Romans he is dealing with.
The climax of the story and the battles are unbeatable, both for pace, writing and cinematography.
The bond between Arthur and his knights is evident and very well done - nothing mawkish. Lancelot (Ioan Griffudd) and Bors (Ray Winstone) are outstanding in their respective roles. There are some brilliant touches of humour, mostly surrounding Bors and his many children which add another dimension.
A love interest is provided by Guinevere (Keira Knightley) who is a Woad, a Pagan tribe indigenous in England. They are warriors who paint themselves to look more ferocious.
I thoroughly recommend this film to anyone who likes action\historical\costume drama - or just a really good story told and filmed in a truly memorable way.
Advantages: Excellent Film, Very Good Storyline, Huge Battles Disadvantages: None
...story you normally hear of King Arthur and put a more believable story about who the real King Arthur was and what he did even thought some parts of the events taking place aren't correct with the History books. I highly suggest watching this film to understand what I mean.
Only Thing that was bad about this DVD is the lack of extras and bonus features on the DVD

Nights are around Review ofKing Arthur (DIRECTORS CUT) (DVD)by

King Arthur is a old legend told many times but this film has a different spin on the classic tale.
The legend is told of king Arthur as a commander of Knights born to a roman farther and English mother, the Knights are selected by an ancient pact to the romans and are taken as children to serve the roman empire. Arthur, Lancelot and the other Knights are bound by this and have won many battles on behalf of the roman empire as to rise to legendary ... ...to the end of their 15 year service to the Romans and are commanded to complete one more task before their freedom is granted. The film is much of a journey of self discovery for Arthur who has renounced the Pagan religion of his ancestors and strives for a peaceful Christian world. as he takes this final quest for freedom he discovers many things about his ideals and himself before he discovers his true destiny.
The cast is excellent with Kiera ...

...caught up in the movie. King Arthur is one of the best movies I've seen. I believe that this movie does an excellent job of providing that view point. The costumes, landscape and visuals are exceptional.
The guy died fighting the long-beard guy. But it was kind of sad and really sweet when the little boy took the dead guy's ring and wore it around his neck. But I wonder where all the wounds go, as in they all have huge fight and next day all the ...

Advantages: Well written, well established storyline which held to historical references well whilst still giving an easily watchable movie Disadvantages: representation of some characters were minimal to no existant and others were seemingly underplayed
...up holding the image of King Arthur as the fearless and courageous character of history. Kiera Knightley performed beyond any of her other roles in this movie giving Guinevere both a chic, attractive and beautiful edge and at the same time being an unkempt warrior who's physical appearance should not deceive the senses. The atmosphere that was created throughout the movie was well on par with Gladiator with the immense soundtrack captivating the ...

Advantages: Very well directed and acted in a highly enjoyable historic epic Disadvantages: Not the history of King Arthur and camelot as usually told
...a bad film. Besides, did King Arthur ever exist? This is a totally different telling of the story, but if you enjoyed Troy, then you will probably love this.
The scenery is stunning and the fight scenes are brutal, but not too much so when compared with many other recent 'historic' epics. The main story is about Arthur and his nights battling against a Saxon army. They are aided in this by Merlin and his pagan hordes. Keira Knightly looks stunning ... ...would have been ideal for fighting in, if all the enemy were too busy drooling to fight and Clive owen portrays Arthur as a strong and well respected leader amongst friends and foe alike. Advantages: A different slant on the Arthur legend. Disadvantages: Maybe not what you were expecting.
...really enjoyed it. I think it is a clever attempt to put a different slant on a story that has been so overused over the years. They do say that it is based on fact, could be it is quite plausible after seeing the film. I think that is up to the individual viewer though. It is certainly more possible than the Arthur of legend, the Arthur of Excalibur and Avalon but whether it is a good thing to change the myth of one of this countries greatest heroes, I don?t know.
KingArthur is available at most DVD and video stockists, Amazon price £12.99 or £14.99 for the directorscut (to my mind the better bet.)...

DVD Description
Combining the historical appeal and epic sequences of films like GLADIATOR and BRAVEHEART, director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and producer Jerry Bruckheimer provide a sleek twist on the King Arthur legend. Arthur (Clive Owen), a brave Roman/British Christian warrior who leads his band of pagan knights on missions for the Empire, must complete one final mission before the knights can earn their freedom from servitude and Arthur can return to Rome. Along the way, however, Arthur realizes that the pullout of the Romans will open the door for a crushing invasion of Britain by the Saxons, and he takes it upon himself to fight with Merlin (Stephen Dillane) and Guinevere (Keira Knightley) for the freedom of the British people. Stunning battle scenes with extensive attention to historical detail rely very little on computer graphics and instead use intricately realistic props, costumes, and scenery. Featuring the largest film set ever built in Ireland, KING ARTHUR features a scale replica of Hadrian's Wall and two complete villages. Haunting music by composer Hans Zimmer completes this story of unselfish heroism, which ultimately provides a satisfying completion to the legend of Arthur and his knights.
