Arnold Schwarzenegger was in 2 films in 1990. The first was the ground-breaking sci-fi thriller Total Recall. The second was this offering, an easier to watch film named Kindergarten Cop, more of a comedic role for Arnie with a hint of danger and a little bit of a hard man performance. The film was somewhat overshadowed for Arnie, as it was sandwiched in between Total Recall and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and was also slated by many for being too farcical and not suiting the muscle bound actor. I like it - it is a nice break from some heavy man roles and a welcome look at the Austrian bodybuilder's acting over action.
The Plot
Detective John Kimble is a tough cop, who has spent many years trying to bring down drug dealer Cullen Crisp. He finally makes an arrest, but has no witnesses who are willing to testify against a criminal with so much reach as Crisp. Kimble's partner, O'Hara, a former teacher, is all set to go undercover as a teacher in a kindergarten in order to flush out Crisp's ex-wife and get her to testify against her ex-husband. When O'Hara falls ill, it is down to the butch cop Kimble to become a Kindergarten Cop, find Crisp's ex-wife, and protect her and her child until she can testify. However, he's got his hands full with a class full of active kids, and although he's a top cop, he hasn't got a clue in the classroom, and he can't blow his cover!
The Cast and Performance
It is welcome to see Arnie in a role that requires a bit more acting and comedy and a bit less action. Twins was the same, and here Arnie is reunited with Twins director Ivan Reitman. Although I enjoyed seeing a comedy from Arnie, and he is good at comedy, I didn;t feel his performance was that good as an actor. He was definitely more comfortable in the action parts - you can see it in his face - natural. His acting is strained and over accentuated in the classroom scenes, and there are even some cringeworthy parts. That having been said, this is by no means a disaster, with him being convincing as someone out of his depth!
Penelope Ann Miller plays Joyce Palmieri, the love interest in the film for Arnie, and she gives a very good performance, as does Linda Hunt as the head of the school, Miss Schlowski. Richard Tyson plays a convincing villain as Cullen Crisp, and Pamela Reed plays O'Hara. The remainder of the performances are strong in support.
My Opinion
I wasn't entirely sure what to make of this movie. Reitman and Schwarzenegger worked together before on Twins, with Danny DeVito, and three of them were to combine again in Junior in 1994. Here, though, I felt it needed a Danny DeVito kind of character to add a little natural comedy actor. As good as Arnie is at comedy, it is not his forte - that is by far and away action and brute force in films such as Predator, Commando and the Terminator trilogy.
The film was a rather simple one in terms of plot, with a witness protection storyline at the front just as an excuse to put the most muscly and violent filmstar in a room with a bunch of kids and see how tough he really is! It works, because Kimble tha character is as out of his league as Schwarzenegger the actor is. The interspersed action scenes provide a good balance to the film, but I couldn't help feeling a little uncomfortable watching some of the classroom scenes with him in - cringeworthy almost.
At the end of the day, this film is merely entertaining - nothing clever is attempted, just a light-hearyed comedy with a little suspense and a spot of a plot to give an excuse for the comedy. The cast do a decent job, as do the director and producers, but there is nothing spectacular on show here.
Advantages: some fun and a bit of action Disadvantages: not you're usual Schwarzenegger stuff
...teacher in the child's Kindergarten school in Astoria, Oregon.
How ever, a twist of fate, together with an over indulgence of food, O'Hara falls ill and Kimble has to take her role as the stand-in teacher much to the surprise of everyone at the school, especially the children.
With his massive bulk and his aggressive nature Kimble's ultimate test is to control a class full of screaming children…
Kimble's job is to discover who Cullen's ex-wife, ... ...then has to convince Rachel to testify against her terrifying ex-husband. It is not long before he becomes very close to Joyce Palmieri, (played by Penelope Ann Miller) one of the other teachers in the school, who turns out to be some one of much interest to the officers.
**IN CONCLUSION**
Not a great movie for the avid Schwarzenegger style movie buff, there is none of his usual battle hard, fist fighting, shoot-em-up and break neck action in this ...

Review of Kindergarten Cop (DVD)
The film Kindergarten Cop is both funny and full of drama. The film takes on two different storylines - the light-hearted teacher's story and the more sinister truth behind the lives of some people that the undercover cop becomes close to. The cop is treated by the kids at first not as a teacher, but as someone that they can fool around with and do whatever they want with without getting into trouble. However this rowdy class of 5 year olds is soon ...

"...[Schwarzenegger] plays off the Schwarzenegger image more gleefully and successfully than ever before..." (New York Times, p.C12, 21/12/1990)
DVD Description
To trap an elusive criminal a veteran cop is forced to go undercover as a kindergarten teacher. But it's not all playtime and naps as he wrangles with the precocious tots and wins the affections of a beautiful young teacher. This charming film is one of Schwarzenegger's best efforts, filled with lighthearted comedy and a surprising tenderness from the famed muscle man.
