The second and final volume in Quentin Tarantino's KILL BILL series is another stylish, sprawling masterwork. VOLUME 2 picks up where the first film left off, as The Bride (Uma...

But before she gets to Bill, she must first take out the remaining minions who helped to slaughter her best friends and fiance. First up is Budd (Michael Madsen), a quiet but dangerous country boy who lives in a trailer. Next up is Elle Driver (Darryl Hannah), a one-eyed vixen who doesn't appear to have a heart--or a conscience. As The Bride makes her way closer to Bill, scenes from her past are revisited, including her training with the angry and brutal Pai Mei (Gordon Liu). Finally, The Bride locates her man, sparking a truly unforgettable confrontation. In contrast to the nearly dialogue-free first volume, VOLUME 2 is filled with extended conversations that bring the story full circle. Thurman is once again riveting as the determined assassin, while Carradine delivers one of his best performances ever as the sadistic title character. Director of photography Robert Richardson uses a variety of film stocks to great effect, adding even more flair to Tarantino's already eye-popping vision. Rounding out things is an electrifying soundtrack that features original music from The RZA and Robert Rodriguez, as well as songs from Shivaree, Ennio Morricone, and Johnny Cash.

The Plot:
The bride (Uma Thurman) continues her roaring rampage of revene in what is the second half of her quest to, er, Kill Bill (David Carradine)

The Buzz:
The first part of Quentin Tarantino's ultra-violent ode to martial arts movies split audiences like a samurai sword, and Volume 2 is unlikely to win over any new followers to the bride's quest. Luckily, we've been promised more of Tarantino's razor-sharp dialogue - sadly lacking last time round - amongst the severed limbs and fountains of blood, as Uma attemps to off Elle Driver, Budd and the eponymous Bill. Besides, we'll only be able to properly assess the work when we see it as one bloody whole - watched as a single movie, it is be something very special indeed.

The Disc:
Kill Bill: Volume 1 arrived on DVD a few months ago accompanied by a little more than a moderately engaging featurette, so expect more of the disappointing same when Volume two appears in the Autumn. That said, it might be an idea for Tarantino fans to keep their Samurai patience, because the big-chinned one has expressed his desire to assemble a kick-ass extras package - a Kill Bill double bill is probably as inevitable as Bill's eventual death.
