Background… Very Important… Quentin Tarantino is world famous, considered a God among directors, producing some of the most famous and gripping masterpieces of our time. He shot to fame early in the 1990’s with the production of the 1991 hit Reservoir Dogs, there was much dispute over whether he would in fact be a one hit wonder, but he shocked many when he followed it up in 1994 with Pulp Fiction – winning Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards. More recent productions have included From Dusk Till Dawn and Little Nicky… less well known I know! In 2003 he directed Kill Bill 1 which was followed more recently by the release of Kill Bill 2 in April 2004.
Kill Bill 1… Very Useful for Understanding of the Sequel… This begins with the ghastly massacre of “The Bride’s” wedding by members of The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad – managed by Bill. The Bride was once a member of this squad but left due to discovering she was pregnant. Necessary for the story to continue The Bride survives the attack which renders her helpless in a coma for 5 years – once she awakens she vows to get revenge on those who massacred her wedding – as I’m sure we all would! She begins her revenge by targeting
each individual member and this episode shows her successfully seeking her vengeance out on several members including Lucy Liu.
Kill Bill 2… Continuing From The Above… Originally there were 5 on the Bridge’s Vengence List – now there’s three Elle Driver, Budd and Bill remain – without spoiling the story completely I’ll tell you she succeeds in killing the first two, but I’ll leave you to wonder if she fully completes her mission! Again this begins with the Wedding Massacre, interestingly it takes you back to the time and shows the exact happenings on the church (can’t help feeling it would have been more useful in Kill Bill 1), she’s also on a quest to be reunited with her daughter – who she feared was killed at the Wedding Massacre.
Cast Members… The Bride – Uma Thurman – quite possibly one of the most versatile actresses around, previous films include Pulp Fiction, Truth About Cats and Dogs and The Avengers. I think she’s brilliantly suited to the role, she brings a bit of class and typical Hollywood beauty to the film, yet doesn’t appear the bimbo at all… she’s brilliant!
Snake Charmer/Bill – David Carridine – a somewhat unsuspected actor for this role, I personally expected a fairly large, burly man however the impression given by this is of a small but powerful man. Previous films include Natural Selection and Children of the Corn V. In retrospect I do feel he suits this role well, conquering yet submissive at the same time.
Elle Driver – Daryl Hannah – again a well known actress, previous appearances include The Job, A Walk to Remember and First Target. She’s always come across to me as someone suited to playing the heroine, or the blonde bimbo, but she does surpass herself in this role, quite vindictive too!
Budd – Michael Madsen Pai Mei – Chia Hui Liu Esteban Vihaio – Michael Parks B.B. – Perla Haney-Jardine
My Opinion… Listen Carefully… Now I’m not really a fan of action and gore movies at all, give me a romantic comedy any day but I do have to admit now… What a superb and fabulous film! This is one of the rare and few occasions on which the sequel has actually outdone the prequel or first film, I often feel slightly let done and short changed by sequels, for example Final Destination 2, Scream, etc. they never quite live up to the hype and expectations defined by the first film. However Kill Bill 2 was an exception! In the more climatic battling scenes of the sequel there seems to be a lot more to gain and loose, as well as a lot more emotion within the storylines. You have the chance to piece together parts from the prequel and understand more about the actually story. All of Tarantino’s classic marks are here, there’s a constant jumping sequence between the past and the present – identified within the film as episodes. The flashbacks play a key part in piecing together parts of the film. I found this very effective but can’t help thinking that it did make the film appear a little disjointed at times. Also within this field, in the sequel you actually discover the true events of the Wedding – wouldn’t this have been more helpful in the setting the scene and introducing you to the film in the prequel? The trademark dialogue is there as much as ever… it lacks coherence, yet it’s addictive and excitable. Not your normal film conversation, only necessary speech is spoken and very little is left unsaid or ambiguous that needs to be said. For all of you out there who enjoy the blood, gore and fighting... you won't be disappointed!
It’s exciting, gruesome and satisfying… yet will leave you wanting more!
