Kill Bill - a dodgy rhyme but also the acclaimed fourth film from the groudbreakingly famous writer and director Quentin Tarantino. Quentin Tarantino first rocked the movie world with his controversial, and powerful debut film; Reservoir Dogs, a film set in a warehouse after a bodged robbery with a mixture of colour-coded thugs and gangsters, launching the use of what would be Tarantino's trademark flashbacks to tell the story of the robbery. This was then followed up by other cult classics, Pulp Fiction, and Jackie Brown. So what of the 4th film? Can it be as good as Tarantino's other classic films? Well, frankly, yes...
----------------------------The Kill Bill Collection----------------------------
This box set contains only 2 discs: -Kill Bill Volume 1 (with film and extras) -Kill Bill Volume 2 (with film and extras) These 2 film volumes come together to make one long film, and volume 2 is simply the continuation of the story from where it left off at the end of volume 1. The story tells the revenge tale of "The Bride" (Uma Thurman), who was a member of "The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad". When "The Deadly Viper's" turn against her, and try to kill her "The Bride" is left in a coma. When she emerges from the coma 4 years later, she decides that it is time for payback with a vengeance. After being gunned down by her former boss, Bill (David Carradine), and the deadly squad of international assassins, she goes on a killing spree to try to kill the assassins who have harmed her, until she reaches her final target, the leader of "The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad", Bill. 'Kill Bill' involves many twists and turns, and you can never be too sure what is lurking around the next corner. With a big cliffhanger at the end of 'Kill Bill Volume 1' it is a good job that you can watch 'Kill Bill Volume 2' straight after. The film features Tarantino's famous 'flashbacks' to tell the story, and this leaves you waiting excitedly, for the characters, mythology, and plot to be revealed!
----------------------------Who stars in the film?----------------------------
This film stars many of the other actors and actresses from Tarantino's other films, and Quentin certainly appears to have some of his favourite actors starring in Kill Bill. The film stars: -Uma Thurman, who also starred in Pulp Fiction and Batman & Robin as the evil Poison Ivy, is the main character in the Kill Bill collection, "The Bride". -Lucy Liu, who also starred in Charlie's Angels, Chicago, Lucky Number Slevin and Ally McBeal. -Vivica A. Fox, who also starred in Full Stop and Independence Day. -Michael Madsen, who also starred in Reservoir Dogs as the evil Mr. Blonde. -Daryl Hannah -Julie Dreyfus -David Carradine The film also has a cameo, YES, a cameo, from Samuel L. Jackson, who starred in Tarantino's Pulp fiction, and Jackie Brown, and he plays a church pianist called Rufus..........and he gets killed.
----------------------------Director, Genre, Classification, and Production Year----------------------------
The director, and writer of Kill Bill is the well
known Quentin Tarantino, as stated above. The genre is usually classed as "Action and Adventure", and like all of Tarantino's films, the classification rating is suitable for 18 years and over, as Tarantino ticks all of the controversial boxes. The films include some very strong language, some very strong references to sex and nudity, frequent, strong, and bloody violence, and hard drugs use. Therefore, this film certainly isn't one to be showing to the kiddies! The production years of the film were 2003/2004.
----------------------------Kill Bill Volume 1----------------------------
This film is much more the Eastern Martial Arts sort of movie. Filmed mainly in Japan, the film is also mainly set in Japan. The film begins with one surprising gunshot, at the head of a bride, who's face is being wiped by a handkerchief with the name "Bill" stitched into it, to remove blood, which she has clearly gained from a fight. "The Bride" can only mutter the words "Bill, it's your baby", before the bullet makes contact with her head. However, "The Bride" is only put into a coma by the bullet, which she will awake from in 4 years time. In this film, "The Bride" (Uma Thurman) begins her revenge by visiting the assassin, Vernita Green (Vivica A. Fox). The film then flashes back to see how "The Bride" came around from the coma, and then how she plots her revenge of "The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad". "The Bride" then goes after the first assassin on her revenge death list, O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu), taking care of many other people on the way, including O-Ren's private bodyguard, Go-Go, personal assistant, Sofie Fatale (Julie Dreyfus), and private army, The Crazy 88's. The fight scene with "The Crazy 88" has to be the highlight of this film, when "The Bride" takes on a whole army to get to her target, O-Ren. This scene is shot in black and white, which I feel is extremely beautifully made. It includes lost limbs, lost heads, plucked out eyes, balancing on beams, and squirting blood…. So one for the kids, certainly. Amazing martial arts come together with tremendous acting to make a great scene, and film. The film ends with a cliff hanger, which makes the viewer want to watch the second volume immediately!
----------------------------Kill Bill Volume 2----------------------------
This film, unlike the first, is much more of a "Spaghetti Western" sort of movie. This film moves "The Bride" back to America, and is set around El Paso, Texas. There is much less bloodshed in this film, but instead, this film involves much more plot, and mythology! With many typical Tarantino flashbacks, this film tells the story of why "The Bride" was attacked by her former colleagues, and her ex-lover, Bill. Flashbacks also show "The Bride's" training, that she received from her mentor, Pai Mai (Chia Hui Liu), and how her training is used to avoid situations within the film. In this film "The Bride" goes after the last 3 members of "The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad", Bill's brother; Budd (Michael Madsen), Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah), and finally, Bill (David Carradine). This is much more of the same sort of thing that we saw in the first film, and simply carries on from where "The Bride" left off in the first film. With ups and downs as "The Bride" tries to seek her revenge we learn more about the plot and mythology of the film. We also get to learn what "The Bride's" name is, as this is bleeped out throughout the first film, and a half, and we get to see Bill's face for the first time! The cliff hanger from the end of the first film is dealt with at the end of this volume, in a far fetched, but indeed, heartwarming way, making the end of the film both moving, and quite unexpected. This film still includes some fighting (obviously), but not to the same scale as in the first film. In this film we have shooting, more swordplay, more martial arts, more eye plucking, poisoning, and a traumatic live burial, which leaves you in the dark for a few minutes. Another great film to complete the tale of "The Bride". So, what do you think? Does "The Bride" Kill Bill? It's certainly a question you'll be asking yourself as you near the last half an hour of the film, even though you were asking it a bit throughout the first volume, and the first half of the second one too!
The Special Features can be accessed easily, as they are on the same disc as the film for both of the volumes. On the main selection screen, when the disc is loaded into the DVD player, there are 4 options; to play the film, Scene Selection, Setup, and Special Features. Each of the 4 menus is really quite self explanatory allowing you to play the film, select specific scenes from the film to play, setup settings for sound etc, and view the special features on the disc. When you select Special Features, a new menu appears listing the special features.
Volume 1 Special Features: -Making of featurette -5,6,7,8's perform 'Jayne Mansfield' and 'I'm Blue' -Kill Bill Volume 2 teaser -Kill Bill Volume 1 teaser -Kill Bill Volume 1 trailer
Volume 2 Special Features: -Making of 'Kill Bill Volume 2' -Kill Bill Volume 2 Premiere Chingon Performance -Deleted Scenes
Personally, I don't think that the special features in this collection are extremely 'special'. However, I am not, personally, extremely bothered with the features when it comes to DVD's, and I purchase the DVD for the film rather than the extra features. However, I do find the volume 2 special features much more exciting than the volume 1 special features. This is because the trailers and teasers on the volume 1 disc are fairly pointless when you have the films in front of you. I do, however, find the 'making of' features extremely interesting, and the deleted scenes on the volume 2 disc are also interesting.
Volume 1 features: The Making of featurette is about the making of 'Kill Bill'. The feature includes interviews from Quentin Tarantino, Uma Thurman, Julie Dreyfus, Venica A. Fox, Lucy Liu, Daryl Hannah, The RZA, a musician/producer of the soundtrack, and Lawrence Bender, the producer. Quentin Tarantino and Uma Thurman tell the story of how they came up with the idea for the film, while making 'Pulp Fiction' together, and the stars talk about the making of the film. The feature lasts 22 minutes and 6 seconds.
The performance by the 5,6,7,8's of 'I Walk Like Jayne Mansfield' and 'I'm blue' are extremely enjoyable, and are performed in the same place where they perform 'Woo Hoo' in the movie. Subtitles are provided, even though they sing the first song in English anyway, and the acting is still going on around them, and so these must be other possible scenes that were not in the film. The song 'I'm blue' does still feature in the film though, before the better known 'Woo Hoo'. The feature lasts for 5 minutes and 52 seconds.
The teasers, and trailer that I mentioned above are as they sound, and simply trailers that you could possibly see in the cinema for the film, before it's release. All 3 are only very short, with the two teasers being under 2 minutes each and the trailer being 2 minutes 34 seconds long.
Volume 2 features: The Making of 'Kill Bill Volume 2' features interviews with Quentin Tarantino, who tells of why the film was made, and how it was made, telling the mythology of the story, and how the story is a straight "revenge story". It has snippets of the film throughout, and also interviews from stars, Uma Thurman, Daryl Hannah, David Carradine, and Michael Madsen. Comments also come from Lawrence Bender, the producer, and Robert Rodriguez, composer of the soundtrack. The feature lasts for 26 minutes and 4 seconds.
The performance by Chingon is a live performance at the premiere of Kill Bill volume 2, and they perform the song "Malaguena Salerosa" from the soundtrack, along with other themes written for the movie. This feature lasts for 11 minutes and 5 seconds, and the songs are extremely well performed if you are feeling into some Latino music.
The deleted scenes feature only one scene, which was deleted from the film. This scene is a fight scene, which involves Bill and some enemies. We do not really get to see Bill fight in the film, so I presume this was the point of the scene originally. It is clearly another flashback scene, as he is with "The Bride" and being quite friendly. Bill shows why he is the leader of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, and the scene lasts for 3 minutes 37 seconds. The scene is really enjoyable, with some more blood flowing, and it is a shame that it was cut out of the film.
The soundtracks for both films are extremely exciting like most other Quentin Tarantino soundtracks. The songs genre's range from Nancy Sinatra's 'Bang Bang', to Johnny Cash's 'A Satisfied Mind', to Quincy Jones' jazzy 'ironside', to the rock 'Woo Hoo' of the 5,6,7,8's, to the Latino 'Malaguena Salerosa' of Chingon. The soundtracks are exciting, with a great mix of music. I love the music from Kill Bill, and own both of the soundtracks for volume 1 and volume 2. These are available from Maverick Records, and they are produced by Quentin Tarantino and Lawrence Bender.
The Kill Bill Collection is available to purchase for a reasonably cheap price to say that it includes 2 films. It cost me Ł14.99 to purchase from play.com, and the RRP is Ł19.99. However this price differs in different shops.
In my opinion, The Kill Bill Collection is amazing! I personally prefer the first volume film as I feel that the fight scenes and the story line is more impressive than in the second volume. I also feel that many people share this view, but I do know of a couple of people who prefer the second volume, and this is mainly because you get to see The Bride (Uma Thurman) being trained by her mentor, Pai Mai. I don't personally understand why some people, including my brother and his girlfriend, can find this film to be boring. However, saying this, they have only watched volume 1, refusing to watch volume 2 as the first was "so boring". I personally, find both volumes to be exciting and impressive throughout! The fight scenes are amazing, with the best in martial arts, and comical effects, such as fountains of blood coming from headless corpses. This is a violent film, granted, but Tarantino does this with a breathtaking sense of style and beauty. We witness one swordfight/sword-dance in silhouette, one in black and white with "The Crazy 88", one over a beautifully filmed snow-covered Japanese garden with O-Ren Ishii, and even a sequence in Anime animation, and this is all in the first film! I should also mention that there are subtitles throughout both films, but especially in the first film, due to many of the characters being Japanese. However, I don't think that you should let this put you off if you aren't really a fan of subtitles, as there are not millions of them, and they only occur for short blocks of time, and then you get a bit of time to recover before having to read again. Most of the film occurs in English, so don't be put off. A great box set that can cure you throughout several hours of boredom, and that I personally, enjoy to watch again and again…and again!
Thanks for reading, Alastair :o)

All out of Es, so you'll have to make do with a VH, but I really enjoyed this review (and the film, even though I didn't want to like it because of all the violence)
