Kill Bill: Written & Directed By Quentin Tarantino Based on the Story By Q & U
Early Summer 2003, My cousin tells me, Tarantinos back and with a vengeance. Now for the past 2 years, I had totally forgotten about this guy, I thought to myself oh yeah ….. “Pulp Fiction” guy Tarantino. I absoloutley loved Pulp…..and if you like your movies I’m sure you liked Pulp too. I also enjoyed “Reservoir Dogs” ….and Jackie Brown. So when I heard this guy was back with another film I was pretty excited. But not only was this movie being made by one of the best directors ever, it was also one big greatest hits of martial arts movies……I have watched and admired martial arts since I was a likkle girl…and I am always up for a good martial arts flick.
I was then shown a trailer of the film, straight off I could see all the cool refrences, such as Bruce Lee’s yellow suite, the Crazy 88’s masks, the very cool samurai swords, the humble teacher that can stand on swords in mid air. (appears in Vol.2)
I was so eager to watch this film. Its About a pregnant bride attacked on her wedding day left for dead by her former coleagues of the deadly viper gang, she falls into coma and 4 years later wakes up and returns for her revenge. Revenge for her fiance, revenge
for her unborn child, and revenge for thos innocent people...most of all for herself.
Now I am sitting in the theatre, its about to start and the cinema is packed with people wanting to know what this guy is going to come out with next. I dragged a friend that didn’t even know who Tarantino is, ….Shame on those people who don’t even acknowledge these great directors. Movie starts…..and movie finishes.
I leave the cinema with a song stuck in my head…”bang bang he shot me down” if you’ve seen the movie you will know what I’m talking about. I have one word for this movie….”Excellent”…I lied I have loads of word for this movie, it has to be one of the best Tarantino movies….I have to admit when I first left the movie I didn’t totally feel fulfilled. But as it slowly sunk in the more I thought about it…the more I loved it.
In true Tarantino style, the movie is upside down and back to front … in other words, things don’t happen in order of events … scenes are shown the way Quentin wants you to see them. Not a lot is given away in this movie, but enough to know what’s happening, from as soon as the 2nd scene all the action starts.
The film is directed well, the films choreography is bang on (But then again you wouldn’t expect any less from Yuen Woo – Ping) ….. but the screenplay…is great, theres something im not quite sure what…but something about the way the dialect is written for the characters, they don’t talk like me and you would but it sounds so cool.
Example: (Something along the lines of)
Vernita: …be that as it may, I beseech you on behalf of my daughter for both those things
Bride: B***h… you can stop right there, just because I do not have any wishes to murder you infront of the eyes of your daughter, does not mean parading her around is going to inspire sympathy.
I don’t hear the word “beseech” used a lot, but it all sounds so cool when its in a Tarantino movie. There is a lot of action, and this movie does have an old martial arts movie feeling to it, the amount of blood that comes splattering out of peoples bodies, and amount of limbs that get cut off are amazing. If you are weak at the sight of those kind of things then this movie is not for you.
Uma Thurman A.K.A “The Bride” can pull this character off with her eyes closed. On one hand she was a tortured woman who lost the love of her life and her child, on the other she is a vengeful all hateful B***h that will stop at nothing to give to these people what they deserve. And all the people she kills and all the blood she spills, still does not stop you from loving her character, using that cool Hattori Hanzo samurai sword seems like second nature to her.
Vivicia A.Fox A.K.A “Vernita Green” is second on the death list, and she can kick some ass, this fight hurts, I mean when you see them kick each others asses, it hurts and makes you cringe. You don’t know much about her character just that shes now got a kid n hubby, and that she can be a real Cow too.
Lucy Lui A.K.A O-Ren Ishii, queen of the Tokyo underworld. Forget what you see in Charlie’s Angels. The bubbly little girl is a stern hard headed woman that you do not mess with in this film, she has her own personal army and a crazy bodyguard (Go-Go) She might not have many lines, but she has a cool “snow” fight with the bride and some samurai swords.
The Crazy 88 fight scene, might be filled with blood and flying limbs, but it doesn’t hurt half as much as the one with Go-Go, and her metal ball n chain. You can hear it swing and you can hear each crack in the brides rib cage when it hits her, and it hurts.
Darryl Hannah A.K.A Elle Driver doesn’t do much in this film, but her character still comes along strong, theres no doubt she hates The Bride, and she will do anything to get her out of the way once and for all.
You never actually see Bill, but every time you hear him you know theirs a certain something to fear and you do not mess with this guy. Michael Madson A.K.A Budd, also isn’t really in this movie but he plays another one of the vipers and inside information has it, he is Bills Brother.
The soundtrack in a movie does make a lot of the movie, and the soundtrack for this movie is so addictive you feel like buying it, Quentin chooses his own soundtracks, and he has some great taste, songs you wouldn’t normally listen to, Tarantino has you hooked on.
I really did love this movie, and have now seen it twice on cinema, the second time I went with my sister another Tarantino fan, and she loved it just as much as I did, now she has seen it twice too, and I want to go again. I definitely recommend this movie to everyone and usually end up arguing with people who don’t like it.
I haven’t written a review in some while …but this was one film I had to shout about.
