The movie was directed by Mario Bava, a truly a maestro of the horror films. He was able to create a Gothic look and set the mood to all his films without relying on gore.
Mario Bava Mario Bava was an Italian director, writer and cinematographer. He never imitated anyone's work. He was unique in his films and influenced others. His debut film was Black Sunday, in 1960 which was a black and white gothic horror. He then worked on many genres but found his fame in horror. Mario Bava died in 1980 of a heart attack, but is still known as a legacy as a director.
Unlike some of Mario Bava's other films, Kill Baby, Kill is actually a quiet ghost story. It still creates the air of suspense throughout the film, and keeps you on edge.
The Plot Dr Paul Eswai receives a summons from Inspector Kruger to come to a small village in Transylvania. He is asked to perform an autopsy on the body of a young girl who was found impaled on iron railings. He is helped by Monica, who is ex-local girl.
Whilst Dr Paul Eswai stays to help the town people, he learns of the legend of Melissa Graps. Melissa was a young girl who had been left to bleed to death after an accident by drunken villagers. Her spirit is said to still roam the village and whoever catches sight of it suffers the same fate she did.
Soon, one by one, the villagers start dying. Inspector Kruger is also found dead.
Dr Paul Eswai needs to find a way to stop the deaths before he suffers from the same fate.
The main characters Rossi-Stuart as Dr Paul Eswai Piero Lulli as Inspector Kruger Erika Blanc as Monica
The movie has all the traditional elements of a gothic eerie movie like, mist shrouded cemeteries, haunted villas and panic-stricken villagers. These all create a stupendous effect.
The film is filled with striking images. The best is, the child’s face looking in through the window. You see a frightened child behind a misty window, a light shining from one corner making only part of the face glow, while the other in darkness. There is also, the chilling laughter through the cold night of the girl being perched on a swing. These images, believe me, you will remember when the movie is over.
Features of the DVD Not many features. There is a chapter selection, a Mario Bava biography and filmography, and some amusing theatrical trailers: Argento's Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Blood and Black Lace.
Retail price of £15.
This film is for anyone for loves suspense films with a good story. It's gripping and keeps you intrigued. The film isn't quite scary but the images will certainly haunt you.
