Kenny - Brilliant Comedy

Advantages: Witty dialogue, funny, totally believable!
Disadvantages: none

Director: Clayton Jacobson Writers: Clayton & Shane Jacobson Genre: Comedy Country: Australia Certification: 15+ Language: English Released: 21st January, 2008 (DVD) MAIN CAST: Shane Jacobson (Kenny Smyth) Jesse Jacobson (Son) Ronald Jacobson (Father) Vicki Musso (Ex Wife / Ringless Woman) Kenny Smyth is a plumber who works for a portaloo company based in Australia. He is your average, down-to-earth, nice guy with an abundance of patience and a sensible and astute outlook on life. He works with 'shit', literally, likes to talk about it, much to the general public's disgust, and although other people tend to look down on him he feels no shame. As he puts it; "It takes a certain kind of person to do what I do. No-one's ever impressed; no-one's ever fascinated. If you're a fireman, all the kids will want to ...

Review of Kenny (DVD)

Roger Dodger, What A Guy

Advantages: Great script, good acting, interesting direction, nothing like American Pie
Disadvantages: The title lets it down, do men like this exist?

When I read the TV-guide synopsis for Roger Dodger, I thought it would be along the lines of a fluffy, teenage sex comedy a la 'American Pie' and I could hardly be forgiven for that assumption - 'When 16-year old Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) visits his uncle Roger (Campbell Scott) in the big city determined to lose his virginity, he is given lessons in life and love.' What the TV-guide didn't mention was, kindly old Uncle Roger turns out to be a smarmy, slimy ad-executive whose views on women are so psychotically cynical, a fluffy weekend in the city turns out to be a damning indictment on the singles scene for the modern man or woman. This is not so much 'American Pie', as 'American Pie-sotically Cynical' (see what I did there?) Working in the advertising industry has embittered Roger's views and philosophy of the world. 'I make people ...

Review of Roger Dodger (DVD)

As Silly as a Bum Full of Smarties

Advantages: A great script and likeable characters.
Disadvantages: The amount of swearing may put some off.

undercut by "Taking Care of Business" for the end credits' final shenanigans. "Kenny" is a film that will appeal to those who enjoy mockumentaries or have a taste for spontaneous comedy. The performances are suitably underplayed, the script is sharp and loaded with fifth form lavatorial humour. Those of a sensitive disposition should note that there is rather a lot of swearing. I really enjoyed it because it fits with my sense of humour and there is a lot of imaginative wordplay, that though often coarse is funny. And I suspect it will find its natural home on DVD where the directorial style will come into its own. ...
