MAIN CAST: Shane Jacobson (Kenny Smyth) Jesse Jacobson (Son) Ronald Jacobson (Father) Vicki Musso (Ex Wife / Ringless Woman)
Kenny Smyth is a plumber who works for a portaloo company based in Australia. He is your average, down-to-earth, nice guy with an abundance of patience and a sensible and astute outlook on life. He works with 'shit', literally, likes to talk about it, much to the general public's disgust, and although other people tend to look down on him he feels no shame. As he puts it; "It takes a certain kind of person to do what I do. No-one's ever impressed; no-one's ever fascinated. If you're a fireman, all the kids will want to jump on the back of the truck and follow you to a fire. There's going to be no kids willing to do that with me. So, I don't do it to impress people - it's a job, it's my trade, and I actually think I'm pretty good at it."
As Kenny goes from job to job, putting in massive amounts of time and energy, he juggles an evil ex-wife, a troubled son, a snobbish brother, co-workers who can't stop talking about their problems, a father who is ashamed of the work he does and is constantly berating him, and a public who is abusive and rude. Through it all, Kenny remains untouched, and his positive outlook on life will see him through the most difficult times.
'Kenny' is a brilliant movie, incredibly clever and addictive, and by far the best comedy I have seen in years!
This movie was made on a shoestring budget, and has the feel of a documentary to it. The viewer is lead to believe that it is a documentary and that the people and events are real - no small task for the actors, director and crew, but they pull it off brilliantly. Not once will the viewer pause to think that the people in the film are actually actors and that their dialogue was written for them - there isn't a viewer out there who will want to know the truth, simply because the characters feel so real, and, truth be told, you want them to be real because the world, without them, is just so darned boring!
'Kenny' is an extraordinary movie, captivating, the storyline so simple yet so fascinating, the characters are realistic, and the dialogue is so clever that it'll make even the most difficult-to-please viewer crack a smile and let out a hearty chuckle. None can be immune to this movie simply because it possesses all the ingredients necessary in the making of a great film - brilliant acting, fantastic storyline, witty dialogue, great directing, and fantastic camera shots. This is an unpretentious movie, down-to-earth, and genuinely funny.
Shane Jacobson, who helped write the story and also plays Kenny, is so incredibly talented. He breathes life into Kenny, gives him substance, and never once falters in his performance. Shane Jacobson IS Kenny.
Although the viewer is likely to be put off by the docu-type filming of this movie at the very beginning, it will take no more than 5 minutes for him/her to be hooked. Kenny will make you smile, he'll make you laugh, his words of wisdom will hit home, and he'll make you wish he was your new best friend. As he takes you along on his day-to-day grind, you will be appalled by the rudeness of some people, the stupidity of others, and the next time you come across a portaloo worker, you will walk up to him/her and shake their hand.
And what does Kenny have to say about parents who comment on his job? "Funny part is parents look at me and say 'that's not much of a job, is it?'. And I say 'well you had kids'. 'You spent the first two years handling their shit, and you weren't getting paid for that'. They shit green, the only things that should be green are pears, apples and Martians."
