It's curtains for the House of Usher

Advantages: Good scary fun. Vincent Price!
Disadvantages: Not available in high street shops

This film is strangely a certificate 15 on video, which is unusual for a film from 1960. There really isn't much in it that would cause it to be a 15, in my opinion. Vincent Price stars in this adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher". He plays Roderick Usher, who lives with his sister Madeleine (Myrna Fahey) in an ancient crumbling house, which has belonged to their family for generations. One day, Madeleine's boyfriend Philip (Mark Damon) turns up at the house and Rodney is less than welcoming to him. The film is set at no particular time in history but it's probably 16th century. We find out that Rodney believes the Usher family is cursed and he clearly doesn't want to be left alone as he descends into madness. Both him and his sister are rather sickly in appearance and manner. Will anyone get out ...

Russell Howard - LIVE!

Advantages: Histerically Funny
Disadvantages: Might not be your taste

I have always enjoyed watching stand up and happily spend many evenings with the other half, falling asleep giggling to something silly. My favourite comedians include, Bill Bailey, Eddie Izzard, Jim Davidson, Lee Evans and Tim Minchin. While browsing through HMV a few weeks ago, making a few usual impulse buys in the hope of finding something good, I spotted Russell Howard's "Live" DVD. The name rang a bell and I briefly remembered seeing a 2 minute clip of Russell on youtube and finding it funny. So the DVD was brought for 9.99. If you have never seen Russell Howard before or seen any of his material, I can only describe him as being hysterically funny with a boyish charm. His youthful physical appearance, accompanied by a very cheeky grin really add to the already funny material he produces. He is very active and almost hyper ...

Falling Down

Advantages: psychological, michael douglas, social realism, dark humour
Disadvantages: depressing

must first make a purchase to be granted change. Fair enough, but eighty five cents for a soda doesn't leave him enough money for the phone call; grabbing a baseball bat from behind the counter, D-FENS proceeds to bash every overpriced item in the place in a fit of rage, then agrees a price of 50 cents for the soda, pays for it, and walks off, with his anger subsided. As the story unravels we, the audience, are forced to make a distinction between an ordinary man and a deranged psychopath. Mid-way through things are taken to a new, hilarious level when D-FENS pulls a gun on the irritating manager of a fast food restaurant after he refuses him breakfast for being two minutes over the deadline. Falling Down could quite easily be pigeon holed as a black comedy with its often cartoonishly over the top scenes of violence, but it is its ...
