Rob Brydon's character Keith Barret has often been accused of being a rip-off of Alan Partridge, and unfortunately this puts off a lot of people from giving Barret a chance. I am a big fan of both creations, and I can see how people think they are similar, but their only proper similarity (other then them both being hilarious!) is that they are tragic characters, whatever they do, bad luck ensues! However, I think, they are quite different characters, Barret is a much nicer person, and will try to help others, instead of doing things for his own ends like Partridge. He is just extremely naive and insecure, which is what makes him entertaining, and endearing.
This live DVD is one of the best that I've seen, and it's very different. Mainly because he is playing just one character for about 84 minutes, and (as Keith Barret reiterates throughout the show) it is not supposed to be a comedy show, it is a talk about marriage and divorce, despite this it'll keep you laughing throughout the whole show. This show on the DVD is the final one of the tour, and it is appropriately filmed at the Cardiff Millennium Centre. Unfortunately, this is one of the few Keith Barret DVDs out there, the only others are Marion & Geoff series 1 and 2, and the Keith Barret Show series 1 (I've still got my fingers crossed for series 2 to come out), I would have to say this DVD is my favourite.
There are only three special features on this, a documentary about Rob Brydon's career and his final show of the tour, which is very amusing and interesting (I was actually quite surprised, I originally watched it for the sake of watching it, but it turned out to be very insightful). He is interviewed by Stuart Cable, and is about 34 minutes long. The second feature is called Really Cheap Seats, and isn't included on the cover with the other two extras, this feature is quite a bizarre, yet fascinating idea, it is the whole show filmed by one camera on the highest tier in the room (you can't really see what's going on). The third is the tour programme, which is nice if, like me, you didn't actually go to see him live.
I highly recommend this, to all fans of comedy, it is a brilliant show.
Keith Barret, ex-chauffeur turned chat show host is back. With his own inimtable style, Keith gives advice on divorce and how to make the most out of relationships. Rob Brydon stars in this hilarious spoof of a TV phenomenon.
