But when Kate and Leopold meet, sparks fly as their old and new world sensibilities collide.... But can a romance bloom between people whose views on life are so differn't? and will the time difference conspire to keep them apart?
Kate and Leopold is a charming and quirky bit of fluff; filled with clichés and silly plot twists, stuffed to brimming with unrealistic romantic gestures and overflowing with gaps in logic...... but it's undeniably entertaining and its attempts to spice up the rather stagnant genre are admirable. It never quite reaches the heights of the romantic classics which is wishes to emulate (there are many references to the immeasurably better Breakfast At Tiffany's), but with the help of two great leads, some romanticised visuals and a certain literary flair it gets some way near. Many will dismiss it because of its non-sencicle plotline and reliance on tried (some may say tired) and tested clichés but it has a certain Old-Hollywood grace that makes it consistently watchable and it provides the warm fuzzies that are the hallmark of the rom-com genre. It's silly and it's stupid but you'll no doubt find yourself, if not swept off your feet, at least gently charmed.
Kate and Leopold's screenplay doesn't particularly try to explain the how's or why's of the time travelling theme and as a result it's never really believable, not that it would have ever been, but the lack of substance prevents you from taking it seriously and so the central relationship is too silly to be truly effective. And that's the main problem with the whole film; the relationship between Kate and Leopold is not fully developed, we don't know why they love each so much and we don't really understand what it is about their unity that transcends the time space continuum. They don't really have a whole lot of chemistry (despite the actors best efforts) and their romance seems rushed through, simply because that's what the audience expects. Because they are in such a rush to get to a rather clichéd and underdeveloped 'happy' ending, the scriptwriters don't manage to make the audience truly fall for their relationship and so the whole thing feels a little flat. However the screenplay, in general, is surprisingly good; the character development of Kate is brilliantly constructed, with a fully fleshed out back-story and a genuine progression. There are many sweet moments and a lot of the dialogue is very believable and interesting. The romantic scenes are nicely written to be crowd pleasing, but not too clichéd and the fresh take on successful-but-love-hungry female is refreshing.
If Kate and Leopold had gone all out on the fantasy side it would have been a great movie, because some of it is genuinely bewitching; a romantic rendezvous on a rooftop is overwhelmingly romantic and the recreations of 1820 are charming. But by trying to mix the frivolous silliness which works so well with some more serious, character driven drama the writers make the thing feel very uneven. As a result it never finds a consistent tone, stopping and starting, not knowing what it wants to be and allowing itself to wander. It never goes as far as it could; Kate seems to have depths which are not explored and her relationship with Stuart could have been infinitely more interesting. Fortunately the magical moments outweigh the flabby ones; it displays a certain old Hollywood style, with a lack of quick fire editing and a pleasing hippy dippy pace. Its unique innocence (there is no references to sex or violence) is very engaging and there is definitely something to be said for a completely non cynical Hollywood movie. It is charming and has its moments of pure escapism fun.
Meg Ryan is on full charm offensive and it's one of the better performances of her career; harsh, intelligent but eventually sweet she beautifully embodies the contrasting sides of her character and she seems to have a lot of fun returning to her rom-com roots. She delivers some of her lines with a wry intelligence and others with such romantic conviction that it is hard not to fall in love with her. She seems to have a surprising knack for physical comedy and mines the emotional scenes for all their worth, making for a well rounded and appealing performance. Although less believable as the hard-faced-business-executive, she builds a sense of world weariness that is refreshing within the romance genre and is intelligent enough to let Hugh Jackman have a lot of the spotlight. Her been-there-done-that spikiness makes her an identifiable and engaging lead. I liked that she didn't overegg the occasionally cheesy dialogue and that she added a nice layer of realism to her role.
James Mangold directs with a certain visual panache; the film has a pleasing Hollywood sheen and evokes memories of 1950's film-making. It's slickly done and stylish and Mangold brings a certain amount of romantic tension to the piece, excelling in the schmaltzy moments and adding at least a little excitement to the finale (although he lets the material slip away from him in the middle section). He seems to understand how to draw emotional resonance from the script and gets some really great performances from his cast. He manages to jump over a few overripe clichés and injects a warm humour to the comedic set pieces. He directs gently and with engaging warmth and intelligence and manages to mix pathos and charm in healthy amounts. He allows some of the scenes to lag and his handling of Kate is sometimes annoying (he seems to be part in awe and part in disgust of her) but overall he directs with a pleasing passion.
Hugh Jackman shows himself to be a very successful romantic lead; he is charming without being annoying and he really seems to relish the challenge of playing an 18th Century knight-in-shining-armour. He has a great screen presence, fully throwing himself into the role which is a refreshing change from his norm and seems to have a real chemistry with his leading lady. He shows his intelligence and taps into the engaging 'goodness' of his character, without feeling too superficial or saccharine. He manages to get a decent mix of scruffy and gentlemanly and never lets his character feel like an old world caricature, always injecting him with humanity. He is not as adept at the comedy as the romance, but he still manages to get a few chuckles and his interplay with other cast members is infectiously up-beat.
Overall Kate and Leopold is a good little romantic comedy. It's not a giant of filmmaking and I'm sure you will have seen it all before but you could do much worse...It's has a good plot, a screenplay that shows at least a little intelligence, great visuals and two brilliant romantic leads.
Advantages: Has its funny moments and its very romantic Disadvantages: Predictable, tacky and very conventional.

Advantages: Hugh, music, photography Disadvantages: the direction
I must admit I went into this film with a few misgivings. It was being hyped as another Meg Ryan-esque film, and I have certainly had my fair share of those! ‘You Got Mail’, while sweet and slushy, was for me one too many of Ryan being cutesy and sweet. And, as my two female friends and I made ourselves comfortable, we all agreed with knowing looks that indeed the main reason for watching this was a certain casting of one Hugh Jackman. ... ...hairy), and the brilliant acting in Swordfish (acted well, looked good, and revealed much chest-flesh for our delight), he has chosen another romcom to display his wares in, this time by spending much of his time in breeches. He even tries out the old upper-class English accent, and gets away with it (it is only ever Australians, and the occasional Scot (stand up Ewan McGregor, and at a pinch John Hannah) who can do accents, ...

Advantages: Hugh Jackman. Hugh Jackman. Oh, and Hugh Jackman. Disadvantages: ANOTHER Meg Ryan romantic comedy?
...Miracle.
The plot : Kate (Meg Ryan, who else in a rom-com?) is a modern New-Yorker with a wardrobe full of high-necked Prada blouses and black collarless suits (sorry, I'm a fashion student, I notice these things) and an assistant played by that promiscous girl from American Pie (Natasha Lyonne). Her ex, Stuart, is a bit of a live-wire who tries to convince her he's found a hole in the fabric of time. As you do. This would be completely unbelievable, ... ...Charlie and Leopold, rather than Kate and Leopold - a classic moment is when Charlie explains the rules of how to wash up (close the dishwasher door when Kate is watching...otherwise it didn't happen!) and their comic moments exchanging chat-up techniques.
In fact, I found myself wishing for more screentime while the two men in her life sparred, rather than waiting for the inevitable love story to happen. If you're a fan of the chick-flick genre, ...

DVD Description
In this romance novel come to life, Meg Ryan plays the titular Kate, a career-driven market researcher who's been burned by love. Her science-obsessed ex-boyfriend (Liev Schreiber), who lives in the apartment upstairs from hers, says he's found a portal to travel through time and has brought a nineteenth-century nobleman, Leopold (Hugh Jackman), back with him. Kate's not buying it, and she angrily calls him crazy. But when her irritating ex is laid up in the hospital, she reluctantly assumes responsibility for the seemingly helpless stranger, Leopold. At first baffled by his forthrightness and old-fashioned chivalry--complete with white horse!--Kate soon finds herself falling in love with Leopold despite her best efforts. But if he doesn't return to his own century, the fabric of time could be disastrously altered. BACK TO THE FUTURE plus WHEN HARRY MET SALLY equals KATE AND LEOPOLD, a charming, idealistic romance that will make you believe in true love. In addition to engaging performances by Ryan, Jackman, and Schreiber, James Mangold, the film's director, appears in a tongue-in-cheek cameo as an irate film director, and Spalding Gray stars as Schreiber's psychiatrist.
