I can’t really get into Hindi films all the time because most of them have a general boring storyline but I really enjoyed watching this.

The film title Kal Ho Naa Ho means tomorrow may never come.
The story is set in Manhattan, New York. It is about three friends who go through a journey of emotions and develop an unconditional relationship that takes a turn for the worse.

The cast:
Shah Rukh Khan – Aman Mathur
Preity Zinta – Naina Catherine Kapur
Saif Ali Khan – Rohit Patel

The story:
The story starts off with an introduction to the life of Naina Kapur. Naina is a hardworking student who never has time for herself. Her normal routine is coming home from studying to her semi Punjabi/semi Christian household to face constant arguing between her mother and grandmother (mainly due to the fact that Naina’s father committed suicide). She has a younger brother and sister to look after as well as helping her mother with the economical troubles of the family business. Life looks pretty glum for this girl. You will never catch her smile

In comes Aman Mathur. A lively, charming man, who will lift anyone’s spirits up with his amazing personality. He moves in opposite to Naina and her family. He notices this moody looking girl and sets out to bring laughter and happiness into her life.

Aman joins forces with Naina’s good friend Rohit and they both set out to help Naina find happiness again. They show her things that she would never dream of doing, and amongst all this the three friends develop a strong friendship. So strong that in fact it becomes a love triangle. Rohit really likes Naina, whilst Naina is interested in Aman, but Aman is interested in Naina but he will not admit this due to the fact that he is hiding a secret.

Now I wasn’t sure whether to reveal this secret to you all but since this is a review on the whole film I might as well.

Aman has a weak heart and it could fail him at any time. He doesn’t not tell anyone because he does not want to lay his problems on anyone, especially his two close friends. He knows that Naina has feelings for him but he rejects her and sets her up with Rohit who he knows has her best interests at heart.

Rohit and Naina finally get married and it’s after this they find out about Aman’s heart condition by his doctors' slip up. Obviously distraught they both stick by him.

So what happens next? I will leave this for you to watch.

The soundtrack:
A mix of lively up beat songs and sad ballads.
Those of you who like a song to sing along to songs, will like Pretty woman, Maahi ve and It’s the time to disco.
All the songs are timed accordingly to the film and I must say there isn’t a lot of costume changing going on as happens in a lot of films. The only bad thing I have to say is that Preity Zinta is not a very good dancer compared to others. One song I had to laugh at was it’s the time to disco. Its set in a club full of bikini clad women and muscular male dancers, not your average Saturday night then! But then again I suppose that’s Bollywood trying to break into the western way of things. Maahi ve is the best song I think, really lively and colourful with guest appearances from top Bollywood actresses Kajol and Rani Mukherji.

Actor performances;
Shah Rukh Khan delivers well in all films he does and this is no exception. He really brings the character of Aman alive. He delivers a captivating performance.
Preity Zinta is still quite new to the Bollywood scene with only a couple of films to her name but I think her acting was very good in this and will be a great asset to her career.
Saif Ali Khan I do not really know about his past performances but in this I think he was also good especially in the comedian parts but also when it comes to down to the emotional scenes.

Final verdict:
10/10
A film which everyone will enjoy watching. It is funny most of the time and this eases into the heartbreaking moment of when Aman’s illness is revealed, at this point it can be a tear jerking moment. I would definitely recommend everyone to watch it, but leave a whole evening free because it’s over three hours long! The film is rated 12.
The dvd has two discs
  • Disc 1
    - Main film,
    - Subtitles; English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Malay, Dutch.
    - Optional director's commentary for the entire film.
