My Thoughts on the DVD extra features: The main reason I love this DVD is the extra content the buyers are given. We get to actually go inside the minds behind Jurassic Park, and see the ideas and development behind each of the three films. They include original trailers, which we may have not seen in ages. For those of us who are not experts with dinosaur knowledge, they provide us with an encyclopedia of all the dinosaurs that are in each of the films, I brief explanation about each one, their methods of attack etc. This is a great feature as it educates us. It has to be said that since Jurassic Park was created the importance and popularity of Dinosaurs rocketed upwards, with children wanted to learn more etc, so it was a great feature to include. We get to visit the sets of each of the film, and get a feel of what each one was like etc. Another good feature is the before and after screenshots, i.e. the DVD shows content of what the movie looks like without CGI, then switches to the CGI inclusion showing the dinosaurs etc. We are also given a detailed character profile of each of the cast members in each of the 3 films, their names, their roles in the films, and other general info one might want to no. The DVD is truly packed with a great deal of viewing pleasure and adds to the quality of the 3 films included in the package, the special features defiantly make it more worthwhile buying the box set, rather than the individual films separately etc. Lastly there are great interviews and commentary from Spielberg, showing the direction he wanted to take the films and how he achieved it in the two films he directed, whilst also showing us some of the early production notes and visual concept boards, the ideas behind the scenes.
Details of each film: Jurassic Park: In 1993, director Steven Spielberg unleashed one of his greatest hits to date; Jurassic Park. The film grossed over $914 million worldwide, making it a big blockbuster hit, with both fans and critics. The film was adapted from the original novel written by Michael Crichton. The film is set on the island of Isla Nublar; John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) a rich businessman invites a group of scientists to his amusement park. The group consisting of; Alan Grant, Ian Malcolm & Ellie Sattler are not expecting to see anything unusual, however are turning up for the money Hammond has promised them. Once on the island, the scientists are shocked to discover something that dies over 65 million years ago dinosaurs. Hammond’s team had managed to replicate the dinosaur DND by using frog DNA. Hammond has arranged a full tour of the island, with the scientist being accompanied by Hammond’s two grand children. The tour starts of well, however sabotage by one of the park employees sets all the dinosaurs free to roam the island, and the group is slap back in the middle of it. It’s now a rice of time to escape the island and save each- other, whilst the dinosaurs have other idea’s. An action packed adventure from start to finish.
Jurassic Park 2, The Lost World: The sequel to the highly successful Jurassic Park was released in 1997, grossing and whopping $786 million worldwide. For years have passed since the events that took place on the island. John Hammond is now no longer in control of the company, however has called Dr Ian Malcolm to his house with some exciting new. Hammond explains that their was another island (Isla Sorna), where the original research took place. Furthermore, Hammond explains that he is setting up a team to explore the island to see how the dinosaurs are getting along, and that one of the team members is already their. To Ian’s disgust, he finds out that it is his girlfriend, Sarah that is on the island. He must now go back to bring his girlfriend home and save her from unexpected danger. To make things worse Ian’s young daughter sneaks on board the board and travels with her dad, Ian yet to no this of course. Ian is now faced with the possibility of saving the two women he loves from death. Once on the island, they track down Sara and the story begins, the group notices that there is another group of explorers on the island, who are capturing the Dinosaurs and caging them for transport, but where to. The team must stop these explorers, whilst also ensuring their own safety from new dinosaurs, that are much vicious than that of the original island. As danger is averted the team soon realizes that one of the dinosaurs is on board their boat back to America, and once again must act quick to avoid the unthinkable, a dinosaur on American soil.
Jurassic Park 3: The third installment of the trilogy was released in 2001, and was directed by Joe Johnston and grossed and impressive $365 million worldwide. The story revolves are Alan Grant, who is approached by a couple who are searching for their child who went paragliding on the island of Isla Sorna. Grant reluctantly agrees to go, however once their soon realizes he is in for a journey that he has been on before. The team which includes, Grant, his team member, the couple and a guide look for the missing child, whilst encountering some of the local islanders. The team soon finds the boy, however to Ian’s surprise he here’s a sound of a dinosaur that is bigger than the T-Rex. The team must once again find a way to get of the island before they are eaten for dinner. However, in their way are raptures and a big bird cage. Action from start to stop, with appearances from Ellie Sattler, from the first film.
My Thoughts on the films: It was almost 14 years ago that the first installment was released in cinemas. I was roughly only six years old at the time, but even I was amazed by the film, the action, the excitement and in some case the humor. Looking back on it 14 years later you come to the realization that Jurassic Park was the first of its kinds and paved a serious step forward in the use of CGI graphics. Spielberg used the CGI so effectively that the dinosaurs and the scenes almost so real, as if you were their on that island looking at this really big dinosaur, with teeth that could just rip through steel or iron. The storyline was brilliant, simply because it had never been done before so well, never had someone successfully created a movie about dinosaurs that looked so real. We had Godzilla and King Kong for sure, but they were out dated and not modernized, this film done exactly that. It took that was 65 million years old and added to the age were man was thought to be the top of the food chain, obviously not with respect to this film. The second installment was also a good film, another good storyline and a bonus of adding new dinosaurs to the film. What I really liked about this film was that they took the dinosaurs out of the island and placed them in a metropolised, populated American City, were it created even more havoc than previously. The third installment ok to watch, simply because it summed up the trilogy, however it was not my favorite. The key problem was that Spielberg didn’t direct it. Only he alone could make the third as good as the first two, using new directors, takes away the passion and the direction one might want the film to go to. However it was huge financial success however, clearly not the best installment.
The main reason I felt this film rocked was that its perhaps only a number of few films, were the main cast or attractions are CGI, and therefore don’t actually exists, whilst other typical films have actors to make the film a success, credit must clearly be given to the CGI team for making the dinosaurs the real stars. Overall I have to give this DVD box set 5 out of 5, and a great value for money. You get all three films, and a huge collection of extra DVD bonus features, which I have already explained about.
