Based on Michael Crichton's bestseller, the premise behind Jurrasic Park, in this post 'Dolly the Sheep' age is as simple to follow as it is clever. Having obtained dinosaur blood, found in the stomach of mosquitos preserved in amber for 65 Milloin years, the biotec company InGen has genetically engineered the recreation of dinosaurs. These dinosaurs form the main attraction in a theme park built by InGen on a remote island off the coast of Costa Rica.
The owner of InGen, John Hammond needs independent endorsment for his park in order to satisfy his investors. So he invites Dr Alan Grant, a palaeontologist, Dr Ellie Slater, a Boto-Palaeontologist and Ian Malcolm a choas theorist to the Park. Once they arrive on the island the group are taken on a tour and everyone is in awe of the park, its prehistoric inmates and the technology on display. Only Ian Malcolm shows any cynicism and warns of the dire consequences of reintroducing dinosaurs to the world.
Of course things go wrong a tropical storm hitting the island knocks out the power making the electrified fences keeping the dinosaurs in their place useless. Also there's some industrial espionage in the guise of Dennis Nedry a greedy computer programmer working for Hammond, who sabotages the security system on the island so that he can smuggle some dinosaur embryos off the island. The Combination of these two events allows the dinosaurs to escape and from then on we have dinosaurs running, chasing and smashing and leaving the viewer to guess who gets off the island alive.
This film is truely awe inspiring, when it was released in 1993 the special effects at the time were real cutting edge, if someone said at the time they had really genetically engineered dinosaurs you could beleive it. Even today, seven years later the effects stand up well against more recent films like The Phantom Menace or The Matrix. Top that with the strong story, all round family appeal and you have a real winner, a classic and that's why it's the third biggets all time box office smash.
