When I was a child, I once found an Easter egg hidden by my parents for me. I ate the egg and played with the toy (it was a giant Kinder surprise you see), and afterwards felt a little sad, because I wouldn't have anything left for Easter.
And Jurassic Park on DVD left me feeling a bit the same. I already knew the movie was good, although not quite as good as the novel, but that's a give. The story is tight, with only a couple of 'please the kids' bits, the effects superb and the characters just the right side of cheesy. Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm is a treat.
As for the DVD extras, they are the toy that once played with becomes a bit dull. There is a 50 minute making of, which gives a few interesting tidbits of information, as well as the hilarious footage of the ILM boffins running around pretending to be dinosaurs. The "Production Notes" are, as ever for a Universal release, a bog standard 10-12 page load of spiel about "an exciting leap forward in film-making" and so on. There are some nice set photos, some interesting pre-production meeting footage (watch the guys talking to Spielberg make dino-noises!), some location scouting footage with a nice cow joke, dinosaur trivia, and storyboards. And trailers, one for Jurassic Park, onr for The Lost World, and a third, for Jurassic Park 3 which is pretty ineffectual and dull.
The best extra in my eyes is the animatic sequence for the kitchen, using stop-motion raptors and Ken & Barbie dolls for the kids. The film was originally going to use stop-motion for the dinos, y'see, but ditched them in favour of better CG technology. The making of fills you in on this issue better than I will.
So, crank up the sound, becuase through a good system this movie becomes awesome, the surround sound rocks, and the BOOM of T-Rex's entrance is scary as hell. Oh, and try the Jurassic Park drinking game if you're of legal age. 1 shot for every time Richard Attenborough says "spared no expense", and 1 shot for every use of the word "dinosaur". 2 shots for "velociraptor". Hic.

Nice opinion-take it you haven't yet tried the drinking game today. Sounds like the DVD isn't that great. Do people buy Kinder eggs for the chocolate or the toy?

I'm still trying to decide whther to go see the third movie... I liked the original but prefered the book, and in fact haven't seen the second movie due to my annoyance at the reincarnation of the Jeff Goldblum character (who as you probbaly know was supposed to have died in the book). Have you seen the 2nd and is it worth it? Good op - Dione
