With Jurassic Park 3 being released soon I thought I would dust off my JP DVD (well, I say dust off, but it’s not that old!) and watch it again.
Quite simply I love this film. Although it is not my favourite film of all time (in the top twenty) it is the one that I have watched the most (at least fifteen times, please don’t judge me on that!).
I think most guys have an inbuilt genetic love of Dinosuars, they fascinate us as a child and I guess we never lose it (look at the recent Walking With Dinosaurs…very popular). We’ve never been able to see real dinosaurs. There have been movies in the past (which is where JP is now, being 8 years old…it was 1993 right?) that have shown dinosaurs but they have been laughable (in terms of realism) at best. JP rocked our world.
I don’t think anyone was prepared for the amazing special effects, which still hold up today. JP pushed the boat out of SFX further than ever before and is probably responsible for the
techniques we see today.
I suppose I should explain the plot in case you haven’t seen it.
A scientist (Richard Attenborough) discovers dinosaur DNA by way of blood in a fossilised mosquito from back when dino’s ruled the earth. Using this DNA he creates dinosaurs (hmmm…let that one go I will). The purpose is to make a theme park for everyone to enjoy, but before it opens he needs confirmation that it is a good decision. He gets hold of two Palaeontologists (Sam Neill and Laura Dern), a chaotician (Jeff Goldblum) and his two grandchildren (Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards (?)) to endorse his park. Also around is Samuel L Jackson (in the control room) and Attenborough’s lawyer (actor unknown).
During the guests trip round the park a worker in the control room shuts down the power in order for him to obtain the dinosaur embryo’s to take to his employer so they too can make dino’s. During this power out the guests are in the T-Rex paddock and suffice it to say, all hell breaks loose.
This is where the fun begins with the guests stranded over various parts of the park, T-Rex and the cunning little Velociraptors after them.
This film is great. No-one can watch this and not say they enjoyed it, unless they are mental!
The T-Rex attack is one of my favourite scenes of all time, superbly done and very frightening. In fact this film should have been a twelve not a PG, but t would never have made so much money if the littluns couldn’t have got in. IN fact JP was, at the time the highest grossing film of all time (now third after Titanic and The Phantom Menace).
The acting isn’t great but it’s not as bad as people make out. The dinosaurs are flawless, very believable and very cool. The action scenes are all great, generally tense and jumpy, more akin to a horror film than a family action adventure…but you don’t get more scary than real monsters I suppose…
With the upcoming release of the third instalment (which by all accounts promises to be something special, certainly better than Lost World [which was good, just not great]) why not remember how it all started, I’m sure you’ll be glad to see this again.
The DVD is quite good too. Unfortunately there is no Commentary track from Spielberg (Boo!) but the rest is good. Various featurettes, Dinosaur encyclopaedia’s, cast and crew bios, SFX featurettes, story boards and my personal fave, the animatics.
These are scenes from the film (two in all) created with little stop motion clay figures…very funny stuff!
The picture never looked better and thankfully the dinosaurs don’t look blatantly computer generated (as is sometimes the problem with DVD’s being such high quality) and finally we get to hear the T-Rex roar in all her glory!
If you’re a fan you should already have this DVD, but it is a film ideal for DVD what with its superb Special Effects so get it anyway. Anyone who hasn’t seen this film, you must…go on, right this m
