I'm sure many people remember the first time they saw Jurassic Park. It was the first movie that really exploited CGI effects to the maximum by creating living breathing creatures on screen.
Add to that a really good story and some very tense moments and it's easy to see why this is one of the biggest films of all time.
For those who haven't seen it (and there can't be many) I'll give a brief summary. On an island in Hawaii a millionaire has created a safari park where dinosaurs roam. These dinosaurs were created through DNA cloning. A group of experts is invited to view the park and give it an approval. But through some shady dealings by one employee and a tropical storm events go very wrong and suddenly the dinosaurs can break free of their fences and roam free. That's not good for the group of people trapped in the storm. There are several scenes that stand out the first view of the T-Rex in all it's glory and the Raptor stalking in the kitchen. The effects are still quite good but look a bit fake compared to some of the stuff you can see 7 years on. Still it's great entertainment.
The dvd has a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation. The picture qauilty is very good. A little soft in places but the colour levels is solid.
Soundwise the mix is in Dolby Digital 5.1. Naturally this is a very lively mix with some great bass when the T-Rex is approaching. There is also a R1 version that has a DTS soundtrack this is a more richer experience.
As for the extras well we don't get a Spielberg commentary. The man seems elusive when it comes to talking about his films but then again they speak for themsleves.
First up is a 50 minute 'making of' documentary. This is very good as it takes you from the pre-production right through to finishing the film. The real draw to this is the parts that discuss how the dinosaurs would be brought to life. You see that model animation was considered early on whihc looks very dated. but then you see the CGI tests that made the film possible with a T-Rex chasing some prey.
Next is video footage of pre-production meetings where locations are scouted and effects shots discussed. It's interesting stuff.
There's also an animatic that features stop-motion animation of the Raptor kitchen sequence. Again it's interesting stuff that shows the film was planned out.
The majority of the remaining extras are made up of storyboards, producution stills and artwork. There's some good stuff here that shows an alternate ending for the film. There are also cast and crew biographies as well as production notes.
Rounding out the dvd are the trailers for the film and the sequel as well as a teaser for Jurassic Park 3. This is actually very poor with just some shots of undergrowth cut to music and a dinosaur growl. Nothing like the action packed clips now coming out for the new film.
This is an essential film with some decent extras and well worth a look.
