Jurassic Park 3 is a good, successful action/ sci-fi film. I personally am a fan of Jurassic Park, as a young child Barbie's were not my thing but dinosaurs instead. I remember watching the first film and being so intrigued with it for Christmas I asked for all the Dinosaur toys that came out that year. Although I am abit older now I still consider the whole trilogy good. I got the DVD from play for a fiver and it was fantastic value for what you got. After the success of the first two films the green light
for the third movie was brought in August of 1999. Based on Steven Spielberg's story idea of the return of Dr Alan Grant, the third film wanted to show more development of the dinosaurs and Spielberg wanted to enhance Dr Grant's character. The DVD was released on 11 Dec 2001 and released as a trilogy box set the same time. ~ What's it all about? ~
Four years after the dramatic events of the second film we find that Dr Grant and Ellie Sattler are still working on their careers but have moved to work independently. Ellie is now married and has two kids. Dr Grant is also a happy man but runs short in funds and research so accepts the offer of a trip with wealthy Paul Kirby and his family on a plane to the island. He soon discovers though he is actually there not for research but to find Mr Kirby's 14 year Old son who crashed there. The island is more brutal than ever and the intelligence of the dinosaurs is really at its peak.
~ All about the Director ~
Joe Johnston was interested in directing the third film as soon as the script was being put together. Seeing as Steven Spielberg had done the others he approached him for permission and Spielberg accepted. Joe Johnston is a well respected director. He went to USC Film Scholl and has won an Oscar. He has also directed Jumanji as well as working in the visual effects team for the Star Wars films. I liked that the third movie was done by a different director and this was one of the reasons I wanted to see how it was going to be different.
~ SP/FX it ~
The third film showed a good quality of SP/FX. Due to new research done since the last film some of the dinosaurs have changed. This can be seen with the Velociraptors- new research actually found that they had feathers so this was incorporated into Jurassic Park 3. The SP/FX was also done mixing techniques which I liked. The mixture of CGI and Animatronics gave the film a lot more realistic dinosaurs. The DVD shows this in a great way especially in the widescreen format and quality of the sound. The lightening and cameras are pretty much the same as the other films but its still pretty quite good with the camera angles to add a atmosphere especially when they are being chased by dinosaurs.
~ Casting and Audience ~
I liked the way they kept Dr Grant in the third film. I thought the performances from the actors were good and even though I don't personally think the film is scary the film ranges for the audience. There is some trying to be scary stuff for the young kids who like dinosaurs and then there's humour added for the grown ups. Its very atmospheric at times and brings a real sense of humour to a thriller/ action film.
The DVD contains loads of extra features which I found really interesting. The Making of Jurassic Park 3 - (Which runs for 23 mins). Tour of Stan Winston Studios Behind the Scenes Photo Galleries Trailers Storyboards
~ Extras ~
- Jurassic Park 3 was nominated 7 times for awards and won 4 awards including BMI Film Music Award and the Taurus Award for World Stunts.
- The Film made $181m in the US and a whopping $ 369 m world wide.
- Soundtrack was released 10 July 2001.
I think Jurassic park 3 is a pretty good film, for adults it can seem not impressive but I think it gives kids a understanding of dinosaurs in a fun way and I personally like all of the films. I do think the third isn't as good as the first but it's not far behind. The DVD was excellent it gives you a lot of extra features which I think was good for the price I brought it for.
