I decided it was time to move on from my temporary romcom obsession, and watch something with a little more intelligence and credibility...somehow that took me to Juno.
Juno is an independent film directed by Diablo Cody, released in 2007. It tells the story of 15 year old Juno (played by Ellen Page), who finds herself pregnant. She decides to give the baby up for adoption, and in her own way, sets about finding the perfect couple to become her childs adoptive parents.
I had known when sitting down to watch this that Juno was a very independent and strong young woman, who knew her own mind and what she wanted to do. The film is more about Juno than about the storyline, although of course the story is integral to what we see and learn about Juno. I was surprised by her, and by other characters in the film. I had expected to really like her, but I actually found her over-the-top. She is rude and witty, and very blunt in everything that she says and does. I felt surprised by her character almost straight away, when we see her in the pharmacy buying a pregnancy test and using the bathroom there to do it, and then revealing the results to the staff and other customers. If that were me at 15, I'd be hiding it and would be terrified of telling anyone. Fair enough, she is a strong 15 year old, but I thought this was a bit unrealistic.
Some of the other characters were just as surprising, notably Juno's dad and stepmum, played superbly by J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney. When Juno tells them of her pregnancy, they don't react how I would expect the parents of a 15 year old to react, but are very calm and her stepmum immediately starts thinking of doctors appointments. The whole point of this film and the offbeat indie style is that it's not about people we would expect it to be about, but I really felt the characters were just a little too far from reality. I know it's indie and I know it's kooky, but this wasn't entirely realistic or entirely unrealistic - it was in a slightly blurry spot in between, and I'd rather have more definition.
My favourite character was Juno's friend/boyfriend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera), the father of her baby. He is a typical teenage boy, a little shy and gawky, and completely baffled by the strong and mouthy Juno. He never seems to know what to make of her pregnancy, and spends a lot of the film looking slightly shell shocked.
In terms of the story itself, this isn't really anything new. Juno's attitude to her pregnancy and her determination to make sure the baby has a happy loving home is refreshing, and in that sense her parents calm reaction fits in perfectly. Normally, teen pregnancy in a movie spells shrieking parents and panic over what to do, but here the focus is on Juno's decision and her involvement with the adoptive parents.
Towards the end the story comes to a head and there are happy endings, and endings which you think will be sad but turn out to be happy. I liked this resolution and that things turned out well for the characters - despite them being a bit unrealistic, I found myself getting attached to them, especially Juno and Paulie.
The soundtrack was, well, irritating. It's all a bit twangy guitar and countryish - but oddly, it fits. Despite Juno being a rock fan and talking about music a lot, this kind of music seems to fit the story and the characters. There is something innocent about it, and although she is pregnant and not innocent at all, it fits with Juno's determined and straightforward attitude to her pregnancy.
I enjoyed Juno, but it was different to what I expected, mainly thanks to the characters. I found it verging on unrealistic, and this isn't a sci fi or fantasy film, so I don't think I'm out of line wanting something realistic. I watched the film a few days ago, and even now thinking about it I'm confused about what I thought of it and how I feel about it.
I would recommend you give this a go. It is worth watching, and in many ways it's great to see a positive portrayal of what can come from teen pregnancy. I'm still thinking about what I thought of it - maybe that's a good thing, that the film has stayed in my mind and kept me thinking.
The DVD is currently available from Amazon for £3.98 - good value.

===What is Juno? ===
Juno is a 2007 American comedy/drama film directed by Jason Reitman and written by Diablo Cody. It stars Ellen Page as the title character, as she is confronted by an unplanted pregnancy and the events that follow when you are a 16 year old pregnant girl. ===Awards===

Advantages: Great performances, a witty script and playful direction. Disadvantages: Have you ever met such an erudite sixteen year-old?
Juno MacGuff is a smart and kooky sixteen year-old whose life becomes considerably more complex after a one-night-stand with her classmate Paulie Bleeker results in an unwanted pregnancy. She looks for the best adoptive family for her baby with her cheerleading best friend Leah. Their search leads them to Mark and Vanessa, an attractive suburban couple desperate for a child. She strikes a deal with them and thinks her life will just go back to normal ... ...the pro-choice and anti-abortion lobbies. Juno is a very smart young lady but she doesn't get mired in the debate about what is right or wrong, she just exercises her right to choose. The characterisation is astute. Juno comes across as a whip-smart, caustic teenager who isn't quite as sure of herself as she'd like everyone to believe. But she's entirely unapologetic about who she is, making it clear that others can take or leave her and that's why ...

...the lifes and times of Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page). Fortunately this movie build up so much hype that it managed to get those bottoms in seats, and some how a teen drama became an Oscar winner. I guess I must have been underestimating what sort of head strong character a girl named Juno would be, as I was all set for the tragic punching ...

What Is It?
Juno is the hit Indie film winning an Oscar, a BAFTA, A Golden Globe, a MTV Movie award and many more. One of the first films of this genre, it became a worldwide favourite film. After buying a Blu-Ray reader at the start of the year, it seemed right to spend extra on getting a higher quality Blu-Ray disc.
Blu-Ray vs DVD

DVD Description
The word 'quirky' has become the quick and easy way to describe films such as LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE and LARS AND THE REAL GIRL that straddle the lines between indie and studio films and comedy and drama. While JUNO fits into that same category, this distinctive dramedy is in a class all its own. Ellen Page (HARD CANDY) stars as Juno, a witty teenage girl whose boredom doesn't lead her to the mall. Instead, she makes a one-time trip into the arms of her best friend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera, SUPERBAD). When Juno discovers that she's pregnant, she's forced to grow up fast as she tries to find adoptive parents for her quickly growing child. JUNO might have a lot of strengths--Page's award-worthy performance, a pitch-perfect soundtrack, excellent direction from Jason Reitman--but it's the screenwriting debut of writer Cody Diablo that makes this such a winning film. Famous for her blog and her book CANDY GIRL - A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF AN UNLIKELY STRIPPER, Diablo has a unique voice and an incredible ear for dialogue that led to her winning a Bafta and an Academy Award for JUNO's script. But even the nearly perfect script wouldn't sound so good if it weren't for the talents of these actors, particularly Page. She won rave reviews for her first major role in HARD CANDY, but this performance proves it wasn't a fluke. The rest of the cast, especially J.K. Simmons as Juno's dad, is just as worthy of attention. JUNO continues Cera's cinematic ascent after his success with the hit comedy SUPERBAD, and his ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT co-star Jason Bateman uses his dry delivery to great effect as a potential parent for Juno's baby.
