(Mrs dave27 has a morbid hatred of Morecambe and Wise and all their works, so I've only included this reference to irritate her) If you don't, they were a pretty dull trad jazz band, who featured a pretty manic looking woodwind player who had the meannest eyes you ever did see who did a pretty snazzy rendition of King Louie's theme song from the 1967 Walt Disney version of Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book' and the memory of the nutter in full voice is a lasting memory from my formative years, so that when I hear that song it's not an orang utan that springs to mind but one of the oddest faces ever seen in the annals of showbusiness.

Now think of Walt Disney and his works, his animated features and try and think about which you most readily associate with him. For me, there is one which comes to the forefront of the mind much more readily than all the rest and that's the selfsame film, a supreme moment in the history of cartoon films. It combines a wonderful story, well told with an epic villain and some of the most memorable songs that the Disney studio ever pasted on a 90 minute storyboard - sheerest perfection.
The film tells the story of Mowgli, the little Indian boy who is abandoned in the jungle and brought up by a pack of wolves. When the time comes and he is approaching manhood, it is agreed that the boy should make his way back into the land of man and Bagheera the black panther and Baloo the bear help him on his journey, protecting him from the evil man eating tiger Shere Khan who wants to make a meal of him.
The original book was quite a dark little tale and both Bagheera and Baloo were quite fearsome characters, as dangerous in their own way as the tiger. The Disney approach took its normal pair of rose tinted glasses to the novel and rendered it into a cuddly depiction of happy go lucky adventure with Baloo transformed into a jazz looking gigantic beatnik type who's 'really gone'.
Kaa, the hypnotic python, and Shere Khan, voiced by that most immaculate of villains George Sanders, are genuinely evil for the most part although Kaa is more light relief than anything. The epic climax to this wonderful film has the tiger as a classic Disney villain who ultimately meets his match, although he nearly takes one of the good guys with him. Earlier, King Louie comes over as quite a menacing creation who is intent on learning the secret of fire so that he can become even more powerful than he already is.
However, it's that memorable array of songs (‘Bare Necessities’, ‘I Wanna Be Like You’, ‘Trust In Me’. ‘That’s What Friends Are For’) which really steals all the plaudits and the marvellous Phil Harris (Baloo) gets all the best moments. Harris returned in the 1971 film 'The Aristocats' as the feline version of Baloo, Thomas O'Malley, but is at his peak here. The barbershop quartet of vultures who befriend our hapless hero towards the end of the film are groovy stuff as well, although the Ringo impressionist was a bit of a mistake. The birds were to return as bit part players in 'Robin Hood', where Kaa was rejuvenated as the slithery Sir Hiss, more of a comic cut than sleazy villain. In fact many of the characters from 'The Jungle Book' reappear in 'Robin Hood' with Baloo becoming Little John and the tiger being downgraded to the cowardly King John.
I will always think of 'The Jungle Book' as the epitome of Disney films, but the way that Disney Time always featured all the best cuts every Easter and Christmas has devalued it as a film and you might get quite an empty feeling when you actually see the whole piece, if you still can.
Ah, Disney Time, as presented by such BIG NAMES as Cheggers - now that was BAD TV - always splendid to anticipate, but pretty shallow fare when you actually come to see it.
Advantages: Great singable songs Disadvantages: Reused bits of animation

"The Jungle Book" is the first Disney film that I ever remember seeing, and as such it holds a very special place in my heart. However, it isn't my favourite Disney film, just the one that introduced me to uncle Walt's films.
Based on Rudyard Kipling's famous "Mowgli" stories, "The Jungle Book" tells the story of a young, "man cub", Mowgli (Bruce Reitherman), who has been raised by a pack of wolves. So why isn't he with ... ...The music in "The Jungle Book" is, simply put, superb. Everyone knows at least two songs from the film ("The Bare Necessities" and "King of the Singers"), and the rest are just as good. The majority of the music is brought to you by Robert and Richard Sherman, with the only exception being "The Bare Necessities" which was written by Terry Gilkyson.
Animation-wise, "The Jungle Book" looks good for its age. Although the character animation is a good ...

...Akielah and so on, The Jungle Book in it's original cartoon form has to be one of the most unforgettable productions to ever come out of the Walt Disney studios.
I will deliberately tell you about some of the characters, but I'll leave out the excitement and humour. The reason being, if you've never seen it before, whether you're 8 or 80, i don't want to spoil your enjoyment, though in honesty with this film, that would take a lot of effort. But ... ...very well.
Anyway amongst the jungle chatter there is news of Sher Khan the tiger, apparently he's coming back to the area of the jungle where they live, and all the animals have only one united thought. To keep well out of his way. Mowgli has other ideas.
After much discussion, the wolves decide that Mowgli should now be sent into a human village, to the place he belongs and away from this killer tiger who particularly hates humans. the job of ...

Advantages: Great songs, tremendous characterisation and voices. Disadvantages:
This is a great movie. Ignore the critics who say it's not up to the best Disney's. Of course it is. The animation is excellent, the storys absolutely fine, the voice overs re among the best you'll ever hear, and the music is outstanding. I can't remember a finer piece of cinema than the King Louie sequence with Balloo and co singing I wanna be Like You. I saw it when I was knee high to a monkey but I enjoy it as much now. If only they could make ...

...I got was Rudyard Kiplings Jungle Book. I had read the book as a child, but seeing the film was something else. There is something special about this film. It is well made and has a good story, but I think the main thing is that we all now the story so well. It has humour, excitement and love. All the things a good animated movie should have. Who does not love Baloo the bear, and have pity on Bagheera when Mowgli and Baloo drives him crazy. The scary ...

This is ultimately a review of the Platinum Digitally Re-Mastered JungleBook which was released on DVD a little before Christmas 2007. It does however tell you all you would need to know about the film, without spoiling it for you.

On my Christmas list to Santa, along with The Simpsons movie , was the 40th Anniversary edition DVD of Walt Disney's The JungleBook. Now, I must have been a good girl last year because, I got both of these, and other treats. The jungleBook is a classic Disney production which has long been a favourite of mine and has only recently appeared on DVD at all.
If any of you are new to this charming tale I will just give you a few brief details. This film was adapted from the Rudyard Kipling tale. There is an earlier film, with a young Sabu in the lead role which ...

The JungleBook is another Disney film which I had never seen so hubby bought me the DVD as he though I was missing out. Again I did manage to watch this without the children so I watched it is peace.
The film is about a young boy called Mowgli who has been raised since a baby by a family of wolves. He is a happy boy and enjoys playing with the jungle animals. One day though words comes to the jungle that Sheer khan is returning to the jungle and he does not like man cubs. Bagheera tells the wolves that he will take Mowgli back to the man village out of harms way.
Mowgli does not want to leave the jungle but he does set of with Bagheera but soon he tells him that he will survive on his own in the jungle and leaves. Mowgli is soon meeting new animals and he befriends a big bear called Baloo who says will protect him. Mowgli also ...
Advantages: Fun for children and one for the family. Disadvantages: No good comparing this to the original Jungle Book.
My Son is almost two and believe it or not this is his favourite DVD at the moment (I personally prefer Lion King). Whilst searching for a suitable DVD to keep him occupied at our local Woolworths we came across this one. I decided to give it a go as I want to get as many disney films as possible and felt that this would at least add to the collection. Now I'm glad I did.
Every time my son wants to watch this film he says 'Baloo mam'. I don't mind because I find that this is a good entertainer, especially for younger children like my son.
I have sat down on many occasions myself with my two year old to watch this film and can't understand why so many people give it such bad feedback. Ok so it's not as good as the original JungleBook, but can you honestly compare any other disney movie being better second time around? I.e is Lion ...
