20th Century Fox Release date- 14 Feb 2008 Director- Doug Liman Starring- Hayden Christensen Samuel L Jackson Rachel Bilson Jamie bell Certificate- 12A Run Time- 88 Mins
Having the ablilty to jump anywhere you wanted, now that would be ideal for a stress time out in the Bahamas or having some thinking time in the Austrialian outback. The film Jumper caught my eye for many reasons. The trailer was fantastic and very eye catching. The action clips and starring actors persuaded me this was going to be an awesome film. Also director Doug Liman who has also directed some of my other favourite action films Mr and Mrs Smith and The Bourne Indentity gave me the impression this also would be another great ation film.
The film was based on a 1992 science fiction/ action novel by Steve Goulds. The novel was put to script writting and now released as a successfull action film of 2008.
Narrative
We are introduced straight away to the main character of the film a young boy named David Rice played later by Hayden christensen. David seems to live a normal life of school in Michigan, USA. He is constantly picked on by the older boys especially one. We see he lives with just his father who is an alcholic and doesnt really bother with him. His mum we find deserted them when David was 5 years old.
On the school grounds on a wintery day, David shows a romantic interest in a girl named Millie later played by Rachel Bilson. He gives her a gift of a snow globe which his bullies snatches and throws onto a frozen lake. Angry and determined to fetch it back for millie he tries to retrive the presant, but as he does the ice around him cracks throwing David underneath the ice and never appearing giving everyone the impression he is dead.
The audience then sees david as being anything but a normal kid he somehow jumps into a location zone and ends up washed yp in the villiage library. We see that there is something unusual about david which starts with how and what he can do. David decides to start a new life leaving his childhood behind, using his unique ablilties he robs a few banks and lives in a luxury pad in New York. David tends to over do his jumping and this is noticed by a group called the Paladins. The Paladins are headed by Samuel L Jackson and hunt and kill jumpers they say that it is wrong to go everywhere you want. His quote ' Only God should have the power to be everywhere at once'.
SPFX/ Narrative
The film jumps straight into the action and stoy line which grabs your attention staright away. Even though there is a complex story it is doen in quite a simplisitc way. In no part was i confused about what was going on. I think it is an interesting story with cliff hangers to kepp your attention.
The format is very super hero. There is a huge battle at the end against the jumpers and Paladins and the hero saving people from danger. Although david was not always like this at the begining, he sees people drowning in a flood and just switches of the T.V just as the reporter says- 'It would be impossible to get to them now'.
The SP/FX are very unique. The jumps themselves were created using Nuke and Shake. The scenes including the Big Ben and the Sphinx were done by using the program Maya. The concept of the jump still used Anay footage but not the same way used in films such as The Matix. As The Matrix was more about stopping time, Jumper was about slowing it down and blurring it. I loved the graphics in all of the scenes. My favourite was a scene where jamie bell jumps a whole double decker bus from New York to his pad in the desert to try and run over Roland (Samuel). I was not bored at any point of the film and felt involved in the action as the audience.
Locations and Filming
I loved the locations throughout the film. The different settings made sure you didnt get bored and you really are going everywhere in the world. These locations included stunning locations such as Paris, Hawaii, Egypt, London and Rome. The scene in the Roman Colosseum was orginally written for The Pantheon but the idea was breath taking. The crew had to make sure they kept equipment off the ground and used limited lighting. Filiming in the Colosseum was limited to 45 mins in the morning and the same in the eveing due to the high numbers of tourists who were there. Even though we saw these locations Jumper was filmed in all of these locations-
*Soundtrack released Feb 19 all written by John Parrell, conducted by Brett Weymark and performed by The Sydney Orchestra. Lakeshore records.
* Prior to release Hayden Christensen says possible sequel to be released as there is still loads of thoughts on the jumping idea.
Conclusion
I would reccommend Jumper to anyone especially those who love Sci fi / Action and Romance. Jumper is exciting, fresh and jaw dropping from start to finish. The acting is done very well and the SP/FX is outstanding!
Advantages: Christensen remembers how to act Disadvantages: Jamie Bell's awful accent
...actors together. Luckily for me Jumper starts off pretty good, and I'm pleased to say that Christensen an actor who annoys me more than many others is actually quite acceptable as the movies lead, on the downside young Jamie Bell is not so hot.
David Rice (initially played by Max Thieriot before later being played by Christensen) is a good kid, a good kid that wants to be a little different. His dad (Michael Rooker) is a heavy drinker and he feels ... ...are not entirely clear.
Jumper certainly starts off as a perfectly capable movie, cleverly delivered and nicely handled by the annoying Christensen. And for the most part I really enjoyed the movie, however no sooner has he met up with Jamie Bell bearing one of the worst mock Irish accents I have heard for a long time (a kind of Dick Van Dyke Cockney, mixed with Aussie Paul Hogan); the story seems to take a sharp nose dive. I should add that despite ...

...was having a nap.
Jumper is about a young man named David Rice who in his teenage years discovers that he seems to have some sort of ability which allows him to teleport wherever and whenever he wants to. As an adult, he has control of this power and is making the most of it, stealing money from banks to live on etc. But his world is shaken when he is targeted by the Paladins, a group of vigilantes wanting to wipe out all Jumpers from the world. ... ...course its cast. The main jumper and 'hero' of the film David is played by Hayden Christensen. I haven't actually seen this young man in anything before but I felt he was distincly average in this film and totally outshone by his co-star Jamie Bell. Christensen seemed to take it all too seriously for me and didn't let go enough, he didn't seem to be fully enjoying himself as you should when filming this sort of movie. In antithesis, young Englishman ...

Advantages: entertaining, great fight scenes, good action, great date film Disadvantages: Can't stand on it's own, no conclusive ending
...sweetly sinister mother. His fellow jumper and only friend, Griffin (Jamie Bell), was left behind in the midst of action as David didn't want to put him in further danger by freeing him to follow him into the fray. If this were a stand alone film, these loose threads would become huge flaws rather than enticements. The special effects were flawlessly executed and definitely add to the appeal of the film. Whirlwind jumps around the world in the midst ... ...blend of action and romance, Jumper could be opening the door to a whole new world of entertainment for movie-goers. Remember though, it is often easier to jump to conclusions than it is to accept the truth, and there are always consequences to our actions. Advantages: Jamie Bell, visually stunning, interesting idea Disadvantages: Hayden Christensen, boring, drags out a bit
This film is based primarily around David Rice, played by Hayden Christensen. As a teenager David discovers he has a strange power - he can jump from place to place, essentially teleporting himself to different locations. He begins by using this power to rob banks, using the money to get himself a luxury apartment. Unfortunatley for David, religious Roland (Samuel L Jackson) knows about the jumpers and hates them, believing that only God should have ... ...to be his job to kill all of them, and begins to track them down with the help of his group, the Paladins. David is not remotely discreet with his jumping, sometimes jumping right in front of people, and so it does not take very long before people start to notice. Luckily for David, the first person to catch up with him is another jumper, Griffin (Jamie Bell). Griffin considers himself to be a Paladin Slayer and mockingly fills David in on some of ...

Advantages: Really building on the first season Disadvantages: Will still need to own season 1 to understand everything
...Season 2 of Atlantis really did move the show into great sci-fi. The addition of Ronan to the cast was a much needed move. Ford in the first season was an ok character but I never really felt that he was interesting enough to be more than a recurring guest star.
I think the writing on the show got better over the second season with some great episodes and drama/comedy. The acting is brilliant, with all the characters managing to become deeper along with us finding out about Ronan for the first time.
Atlantis got its own in-house special effects for season 2 and you can really notice the difference. They really take the CGI up a notch in season 2 with some amazing space battles. The introduction of the Earth ship Daedalus really gives them a chance to show more aswell instead of last seasons puddle jumper shots.

Advantages: Really helpful, entertaining Disadvantages: Would have liked to see more equine models
...This is a really useful DVD that would be helpful for anyone interested in show jumping, cross country or any other equestian activity.
To perform any equestrian activity well, your horse or pony needs to be balanced, supple, attentive to the aids and obedient. Dressage comes from French term "to train" and that is what we all have to do in partnership with our mounts, if we wish to perform well.
Dressage trains the horse to go in the correct manner and perform what is asked of it obediently. Who would want to jump a horse that did not move properly or do what theyI asked it?
This 85 minute DVD takes Olympic and long-term GB dressage team member Richard Davison and pairs him up with two of the greatest show jumpers on the circuit today, John Whitaker and his son Robert.
John is known for his intuitive feel for a horse and is...

Advantages: Greta storyline, music, cast Disadvantages: a bit old
...i think like mike is a great dvd, because kit combines wish-fullfillment, sports, and great music. thought Lil Bow Wow was good in the lead, and it certainly didn't hurt to have actors like Robert Forster and Eugene Levy in supporting roles. Ilove playing basketball so this pushes me towards this sort of dvd but you dont have to play basketball to enjoy the dvd. their is also an element of unrealism, this is shown from when calvin plays a half time game against tracy reynolds (Morris Chestnut), and first hits a 25 foot jumper then a superman dunk from behind the free throw line for a kid that 4ft 10. Iwould reccomend this dvd to anyone that wold enjoy a bit of fantasy and a great family film...
