The premise must have had the money men rubbing their hands with glee and for the first few minutes of the film i nodded with a slight misapprehension as i saw the bike, the gun, all to good effect. And then the moment that ruined the ENTIRE movie for me. Dredd, or should i say, stallone, for it was he and not our mealy mouthed hero, TOOK OFF HIS HELMET.
Now fans of the comic KNOW that Dredd never takes off his helmet, or flirts with Hershey, who is well able to handle herself, as is any judge. Newcomers to Dredd got to 'enjoy' a second rate action romp with stallone, but in all honesty, Demolition Man did it much, much better.
The plot was a veiled attempt to intoduce Dredds evil clone and a plot to take over the world with more evil clones. There were some good bits. The ABC type robots and the EXCELLENT Mean Machine were all too brief, but did provide the only time in the whole movie when i suspended disbelief for one brief second to see stallone transform into dredd as he roared angrily at the terrifying insane Mean Machine. Pity the movie wasnt about him...
Avoid like the plague unless your a stallone fan, or a sucker for bad sci fi action movies. Hang your head in shame and start a petition for a decent Dredd movie if youre a fan. Lets do the great man justice....I am THE LAW....
