I had seen the trailer for this film when it was released at the cinema and thought that it looked quite good but never got around to seeing it, finally a few nights ago both me and hubby managed to sit and watch it.
Brendan Fraser plays the role of Trevor Anderson who is a volcanologist. He gets a visit from his nephew who has come to stay for a few days whilst his Mom moves house. Sean, the nephew is not happy about staying with his uncle as he thinks it is going to be boring but things take a turn for the better when Trevor is given a box of things which belonged to his brother and he makes a startling discovery. This discovery leads Trevor and Sean to Iceland to see just what Sean’s Dad was on too when he went missing.
The pair get a tour guide called Hannah who leads them to the caves where it is believed they will find some sort of evidence as to the theory which Max, Trevor’s brother, was on to. As they head for the caves they encounter a massive storm and end up being trapped in the cave and having to find another way out. This leads the trio on a massive adventure deep under the Earth’s surface but will they manage to find the centre of the Earth and prove that the book was real and just what else will they find on their journey?
I thought that this film was very good considering it is aimed at children and I have never read the book so knew very little about it all. I thought that Brendan Fraser played the role of Trevor very well and he was his usual daft self which made for some good viewing. He worked well on screen with both Josh Hutcherson, Sean and Anita Briem, Hannah. They all has a great onscreen chemistry which made the film easier to watch.
There was not too many supporting actors in this film as it is mainly centred around the three people on their journey but the ones which we did see where all good and made their roles fun and believable. I did not find I was getting bored at any point with only 3 main characters.
I thought that the storyline was good if not a little far fetched at times but considering this was for children I found it very easy to follow and forgot that this was a fantasy at times. The story was at times very predictable but I did manage to see past this and enjoy what I was watching.
The effects in the film were very good and all looked very realistic. There were some points in the film when hubby said that it did not look right but as I said to him the lighting was not going to be too good as they were under the Earth’s surface. I thought that a lot of time, effort and money were put into all of the effects to make them all look as good and realistic as they did.
The music throughout the film was good and appropriate for the places which it was used but nothing really stood out for me and I actually cannot remember a single track which was played now.
The DVD which we have is the two disc edition and the second disc is full of bonus features. Included in these are:-
Commentary by Brendan Fraser and Director Eric Brevig A World Within Our World Being Josh How to Make Dinosaur Drool Adventure at the Centre of the Earth
As I am not a fan of bonus features I have not watched any of these so cannot give comment on them.
The running time of this film is 89 minutes which I found to be a good length and I was not loosing interest or getting bored at any point. The certificate on the film is a PG, there is some slight scary scenes in the film and mild peril but nothing which would upset children or scare them.
We managed to get this DVD from Tesco for just £7 which I found to be a great price considering that this version of the DVD also has the film in a 3D version and contains 2 pairs of 3D glasses but hubby would not watch it this way so I am unable to comment on how good it was or how there was no real difference. I think that this would appeal more to children than adults.
I do recommend this film for both adults and children as it is fun, has great actors and a good story.
