We had wanted to see this at the cinema, but since our local cinema never played it we had to make do with buying the DVD!
~Synopsis~
Trevor played by Brendan Fraiser is a single man who is playing host to his nephew for a few days. His nephew Sean is the son of his brother who disappeared years earlier. When he's dropped off, Sean's mum leaves a box of goodies that had belonged to Trevor's brother. Whilst perusing these items Trevor come across a copy of Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Inside the book are notes made by Trevor's brother, Trevor wants to investigate further and after a quick trip to his lab (he's a volcanologist ) where he discovers some numbers match the ones his brother has written out, Trevor and Sean set off to Iceland to find out more.
After discovering the fellow volcanologist they'd intended to question is dead, they talk to his daughter Hanna, who tells them both her father and Trevor's brother were 'Vernians' who believed Jules Verne was actually reciting factual events rather than a work of fiction.
Again they set off to find more information, this time with Hanna in tow, and begin their journey toward the centre of the earth.
There's obviously a lot more to it, but I don't want to spoil the story for anyone.
Fraser does pretty well, with a poor script and storyline. He plays the part in pretty much the same vein as he plays his character in the Mummy series of films. The film is obviously not one to be taken seriously and this is reflected in Fraser's character and acting style.
Josh Hutcherson - Sean Anderson
Kids in films can be completely obnoxious and irritating, Hutcherson manages to avoid both of these. He's not the best child actor I've seen, but by no means the worst, he works well with Fraser, but in his solo scenes he isn't quite strong enough to pull them off.
Anita Briem - Hannah Ásgeirsson
I have to say Briem is quite forgettable in this movie and seems to be there just to balance the gender quotas. When you compare her to the likes of Rachel Weisz in the Mummy films, she's is definitely a poor leading lady.
~My Thoughts~
The film is just not in the same league as the original Journey to the Centre of the Earth, even though the original is over 40 years old, the writing was just so much better, the effects were cheesy, but at the time that was the best they could do.
Unfortunately in this version the effects are still cheesy and are no where near the best the industry has to offer, the dinosaur, which featured massively on the advertising but actually only had a small part, looked like it had been developed 20 years ago, it was even poorer than the Jurassic Park dinos.
Of course its not a film to take seriously, its a kind of Indiana/Mummy/Lara Croft style film where so many unbelievable things happen that all you can do is sit back and enjoy, because if you try to dissect the things that could just never happen, you'd be there all year.
The DVD comes with a standard film and a 3D film, I haven't watched the 3D film right the way through because it hurts my eyes after a while. But the parts I've seen are quite good, it really does look like Fraser is spitting in your eye when he cleans his teeth lol. Unfortunately the 3D glasses make the entire film a strange colour, but for kids its a good laugh.
Overall I'd say if you don't take your films too seriously and enjoy adventure films then give it a try. It's a fine family film because there's no swearing or sex to worry about.
