This production of Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the first film rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's debut musical, which was originally presented in its shorter form at college auditoriums back in 1970.
Based from the last parts of the Bible's book of Genesis - it tells the story of Jacob (whom God called ISRAEL so as to bear the lineage of His chosen race, as according to the Bible) and his son Joseph, whom he favoured above all his 12 sons (how'd it came to be, you can read all about it on Genesis chapters 29 to 31). The story involves the dreams of Joseph being above his brothers, the multi-coloured coat that his father Jacob gave him, and the fulfilment of Joseph's visions in his lifetime.
Presented in the setting of being in front of schoolkids and the teachers' faculty members as an elementary school presentation- it opens with the scene of the schoolkids being whisked into the school auditorium by the teachers, while everyone is waiting for the quite late arrival of the narrator played by Maria Friedman, who hurrying along entered fumbling with the Bible that she accidentally dropped to her feet kicked to the laughter of the kids and disapproving looks of the school principal and teachers, which only seem to indicate to the viewer that the story is no holy relic according to its producers- that after an apologitical smile she went on to present the story's introduction on a musical number (thus as because it is a musical), bridging to the entrance of the charachter of Joseph - singing the theme "Any Dream Will Do". As Friedman's (musical) narration went, the story is presented in a fictionalized vision as if accordingly to the imagination of the schoolkid audiences, portraying the staff of the school's office as playing the charachters within the story. And so it goes in its storyline of Joseph's brothers being jealous of Jacob's favourtism about him, that out of envy they conspired to have him sold to the slave-traders who are passing by that got Joseph sold down to Egypt. Whilst in Egypt, it turned out that Joseph became well favoured by the Pharoah himself, but was imprisoned when accused of sexually assaulting the Pharoah's wife whom Joseph always refused. Rotting in prison, Joseph took the knack to use his talents of interpreting dreams to the lease of giving him a second chance, by interpreting the dreams of the Pharoah's two prominent servants who are sent along with him in the dungeon, who in turn recommended Joseph to the new Pharoah (this time guised as The King (ie. Elvis-impersonator like)), who's dream Joseph interpreted, that landed Joseph again into a prominent possition. I'll leave the rest for you to watch and see what happened on the rest of the story, and what happened to Joseph's brothers and Jacob.
Starring Donny Osmond, who in top form accomplished some good renditions of the songs (i'm not a fan though) in the title role; and Richard Attenborough as Jacob, who also plays the school principal - this version is quite impressive with its choreographies amidst the backdrop of Webber and Rice's good musical pieces, along with its well calculated production setting and great performances by its cast.
Tis one of those that you could say so as good for the entire family to watch, if not only for the risque skin-tight costumes, and scenes of sexual innuendos that seem to have lingered more than necessary. In any case, I find the songs catchy, along with its humour, and in some of its momments it may even drive you touched into to tears...mainly by the ending kind of. snff-snff
This production is also available with an audio soundtrack, which is quite such as those that are good to play in the car while on a ride taking the kids to school.
This is one of the best filmed version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals that I've seen.
