Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat before shifting to the New Testament and hitting the big time with Jesus Christ Superstar. And thanks to the box-office clout of Lloyd Webber, as well as the rather sparse supply of new tuneful musicals, this charming little show has reached audiences far beyond the schoolchildren it was intended for. The score shows off Rice's clever lyrics and Lloyd Webber's wide eclectic tastes, with his takes on country, calypso, French café music, Rudy Vallee, and Elvis. The show also includes some simply very fine songs, including "You Are What You Feel/Jacob and Sons," "Close Every Door," and the peppy "Go Go Joseph." Leading the 1982 Broadway cast is the enormously appealing Laurie Beechman in the role of the narrator. Joseph has been subsequently revived in bigger, bolder incarnations starring Donny Osmond and then Sam Harris, presumably to justify a big ticket price for what at heart remains a small-scale show--proof that you don't always get what you pay for. --David Horiuchi

the transition from cantata for schoolkids to big-budget glitzfest with Steven Pimlott's 1991 London revival. Here's the 1992 Canadian version of that show, and even if it's not an ideal recording--Janet Metz as the narrator is no match for Laurie Beechman in the original Broadway cast and there's a little too much synthesizer in the orchestrations--this CD is valuable for the performance of former teen pop idol Donny Osmond as the title character. He's in excellent voice, and was so right for the role that he was selected to preserve it for the 2000 video production. And of course the songs are still here, showcasing Rice's witty lyrics and Lloyd Webber's chameleon tendencies--dabbling in country, calypso, French cafés, and a King-like pharaoh--as well as favorites "Any Dream Will Do," "Close Every Door," and "Go, Go, Go Joseph." This production also includes the "Joseph Remix" (also known as the "Joseph Megamix"), a nine-minute medley of themes arranged with a heavy beat that was used for a kind of onstage aerobics routine as the show's postscript. --David Horiuchi

This production of Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the first film rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's debut musical, which was originally presented in its shorter form at college auditoriums back in 1970.
Based from the last parts of the Bible's book of Genesis - it tells the story of Jacob (whom God called ISRAEL so as to bear the lineage of His chosen race, as according to the Bible) and his son Joseph, whom he favoured above all his 12 sons (how'd it came to be, you can read all about it on Genesis chapters 29 to 31). The story involves the dreams of Joseph being above his brothers, the multi-coloured coat that his father Jacob gave him, and the fulfilment of Joseph's visions in his lifetime.
Presented in the setting of being in front of schoolkids and the teachers' faculty members as an elementary school presentation- it opens with the scene of the schoolkids being whisked into the school auditorium by the teachers, while everyone is waiting for the quite late arrival of the narrator played by Maria Friedman, who hurrying along entered fumbling with the Bible that she accidentally dropped to her feet kicked to the laughter of the kids and disapproving looks of the school principal and teachers, which only seem to indicate to the viewer that the story is no holy relic according to its producers- that after an apologitical smile she went on to present the story's introduction on a musical number (thus as because it is a musical), bridging to the entrance of the charachter of Joseph - singing the theme "Any Dream Will Do". As Friedman's (musical) narration went, the story is presented in a fictionalized vision as if accordingly to the imagination of the schoolkid audiences, portraying the staff of the school's office as playing the charachters within the story. And so it goes in its storyline of Joseph's brothers being jealous of Jacob's favourtism about him, that out of envy they conspired to have him sold to the slave-traders who are passing by that got Joseph sold down to Egypt. Whilst in Egypt, it turned out that Joseph became well favoured by the Pharoah himself, but was imprisoned when accused of sexually assaulting the Pharoah's wife whom Joseph always refused. Rotting in prison, Joseph took the knack to use his talents of interpreting dreams to the lease of giving him a second chance, by interpreting the dreams of the Pharoah's two prominent servants who are sent along with him in the dungeon, who in turn recommended Joseph to the new Pharoah (this time guised as The King (ie. Elvis-impersonator like)), who's dream Joseph interpreted, that landed Joseph again into a prominent possition. I'll leave the rest for you to watch and see what happened on the rest of the story, and what happened to Joseph's brothers and Jacob.
Starring Donny Osmond, who in top form accomplished some good renditions of the songs (i'm not a fan though) in the title role; and Richard Attenborough as Jacob, who also plays the school principal - this version is quite impressive with its choreographies amidst the backdrop of Webber and Rice's good musical pieces, along with its well calculated production setting and great performances by its cast.
Tis one of those that you could say so as good for the entire family to watch, if not only for the risque skin-tight costumes, and scenes of sexual innuendos that seem to have lingered more than necessary. In any case, I find the songs catchy, along with its humour, and in some of its momments it may even drive you touched into to tears...mainly by the ending kind of. snff-snff
This production is also available with an audio soundtrack, which is quite such as those that are good to play in the car while on a ride taking the kids to school.
This is one of the best filmed version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals that I've seen.
Advantages: Great way of telling kids bible stories, great songs Disadvantages: The choreography isn't as good as the stage version
...to life brilliantly! Joseph is one of 12 sons, and his father Jacob's favourite. So of course his brothers are jealous! But when his Dad gives Joseph a brilliant coat, it's the final straw. They sell Joseph as a slave, and tell their Dad that he's dead. In Egypt, Joseph is sold to a rich man named Potiphar. Potiphar likes Joseph and vice versa, so he's soon made leader of the household. But after a fling with Potiphar's evil wife he ends up in prison. ... ...Donny Osmond stars as Joseph (which I think is daft, as he's about 40 and Joseph's supposed to be around 20, but he's still good!) with Richard Attenborough as Joseph, Joan Collin's as Mrs Potiphar and Maria Friedman as the Narrator.
It's not as good as the stage version, particularly the choreography, but it's still great. I think this just a brilliant way of telling kids bible stories without getting them bored! It's a great film for all the family, ...

Advantages: Fun, Cheap & A Great Sing-A-Long Film Disadvantages: None
Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the dvd from the fantastic West End and Broadway hit musical. Which still plays to packed out audiences worldwide today, after it's first performance back in 1968.
This DVD, an adaption of the stage version turned into a film, rather than a live stage performance recording, starts off with the Narrator played by London stage veteran Maria Friedman. She plays the role very well and then walking through ... ...Any Dream Will Do.
Joseph is the favourite son and his brothers resent him for it, his father gives him an amazing technicolor dreamcoat, full of a dazzling array of stunning colors. His brothers are fuming so sell him to become a slave and lie to their father saying he has been killed. But what brothers don't know it that Joseph comes a 2nd to the Phearoh, Sing along to hit classic's including Any Dream Will Do, Close Every Door, Go Go Go Joseph, ...

Advantages: Great songs and a well known storyline. Disadvantages: Poor sets which made me feel I was watching a school play.
This version of Joseph is fantastic...if you're a Donny Osmond fan. Which is why I watched it in the first place. Otherwise I think it's a disappointing version of an excellent Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice masterpiece. The storyline sticks to the original well known story, with a host of wellknown songs, which in my opinion are well orchestrated and sung by the cast.
The sets are cheap and flimsy, and although this is intentional, it didn't add ... ...parts I didn't find terribly funny, although the Pharoah did have me chuckling!
The cast fit the parts well, and there isn't a bad performance amongst them, but although I adore Donny, I didn't think he was great in ths role.
I think that the songs save this from being a dire tragedy. Having seen the show in local theatres and the West End, I guess this was always going to be a disappointment for me. The music definitely saved this film from being ...

Advantages: Fantastic Music Disadvantages: Seems like a low-budget musical
Although it is a Bible story, this musical has instant appeal to everyone, as the music is so catchy, and there are a few modern references. The narrator is the most original character, as she tells the story to a group of schoolchildren and makes the whole storyline seem so much more interesting.
The other characters are good, although they can seem a little over-acted at times. The singing is great - they make it look very easy and really add ... ...to get started, but when it finally gets moving, it's a great starter for those unfamiliar with the Musical genre. The limited 'set' can be a little off-putting.
With the evergreen "Any Dream will Do" and the deeply moving "Close Every Door", this musical cannot help but draw in it's audience, leaving you on the edge of your seat for the conclusion. ...
