the lateral-thinking crime-busters seem to be capturing each other's hearts as well as criminals, a new foil to Jonathan's sharp mind appears in the form of showbiz agent Carla Borrego. At Christmas I had a lovely surprise from my husband who bought me the complete boxed set of Jonathan Creek DVD’s. Dave insisted that I had told him that I wanted this set but all I had said was that I liked Jonathan Creek – I didn’t actually realise that this set existed so it was a great surprise for me!
The boxed set consists of five DVD cases – each of the first four contains two DVD’s and covers each of the four series. The final one only contains one DVD on which there are the two Christmas specials from 1998 and 2001. The whole thing is classified as 15 presumably because there are a lot of murders!
For those of you not familiar with Jonathan Creek each episode centres on a seemingly impossible crime which is eventually solved by Jonathan whose job is to design illusions for the magician Adam Klaus.
Examples of the crimes include someone who is seemingly seen committing suicide by shooting herself hours after she actually died of a drugs overdose, a man who is found shot in a sealed bunker seemingly having committed suicide but his arthritis meant he wouldn’t have been able to even hold the gun let alone pull the trigger, a priceless antique disappears from a room surrounded by security men and no one has gone in or out – you get the idea……..
Since a good part of the enjoyment of the programme is trying to work out how each crime was perpetrated I do not intend to go through the episodes and give any clues as to the stories. Actually considering that there are a total of 25 episodes in the boxed set you’d lose the will to live by the time you got to the end of the review! LOL!
The acting across all four of the series is excellent and I’ll tell you a bit about the main characters to give you a flavour of the programme.
Jonathan Creek is played by the stand up comedian and star of QI Alan Davies. Now I have to admit that I am a great fan of his so I am biased but I think he plays the character of Jonathan superbly. As I said he works for a magician designing his illusions so he has the sort of mind for thinking laterally so he always manages to solve the ‘impossible’ crime. He is single and lives a beautiful converted windmill.
Maddy Magellan is played by Caroline Quentin and is Jonathan’s sidekick in the first three series and the 1998 Christmas special. She is a freelance investigative journalist and as such gets involved in reporting the crimes which is where she and Jonathan first teamed up. She really fancies Jonathan and gets very jealous if he shows an interest in anyone else. There are occasions when the two of them almost get together but I won’t spoil it by telling you if anything actually happens or not! Maddy tends to be as headstrong and volatile as Jonathan is calm and thoughtful which leads to some interesting and comical exchanges between them!
Carla Borrego is played by Julia Sawalha and is an ex girlfriend of Jonathan’s who is now married to Brendan played by Adrian Edmondson. She takes over as Jonathan’s sidekick for the fourth series and the 2001 Christmas special. She is a TV presenter on a ‘Crimewatch’ type programme which is how she and Jonathan come to be reunited. She is very sexy and obviously still fancies Jonathan.
Adam Klaus is played by Antony Head (Uther Pendragon in the recent series of Merlin) in the first two series and by Stuart Milligan in the third and fourth series. He is a magician with a huge ego and assumes that all the ladies will fall into bed with him and they usually do! Jonathan is definitely the brains behind his career!
All of the episodes are written by David Renwick who also wrote One Foot in the Grave and the theme tune is the haunting Danse Macabre by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns.
On a couple of the DVDs there are short interviews with cast members too and one has some scenes originally shot but never included in a particular episode.
The set is currently on sale at www.play.com for £27.99 with free delivery and, of course, if you go via a cash back website this will be slightly reduced by an amount which is dependant on which website you use.
Since Christmas Dave and I have watched all of the episodes apart from the 2001 Christmas special and I have to say that we have both enjoyed every one!
If you enjoy trying to solve a good mystery I would thoroughly recommend this set to you!
Advantages: Great scripts, baffling mysteries, different angle on the murder mystery genre. Disadvantages: Too few episodes!
...when I first came across Jonathan Creek, i was sceptical. Most murder mysteries don't appeal to me and i thought that this might just be another dull and unimaginative offering.
How wrong I was.
Jonathan Creek is like no other mystery programme. It is not your typical 'who-dunnit', it is more of a 'how-dunnit'.
The main character, obviously, is Jonathan Creek (played with aplomb by Alan Davies), a shaggy-haired, duffel-coat wearing magician's ... ...vivid dreams are coming true, Jonathan Creek never looks to the supernatural for explanations, and instead always produces a staggeringly believable and perfectly logical conclusion. It is not just the different angle on the mysteries that sets this programme apart from the rest. The programme, whilst predominantly being a serious drama, has many touches of comedic genius interspersed throughout each episode. Whether it be a witty one-liner or the ...

A must-have for Jonathan Creek fans!
I won't go into the stories too much because one of the main reasons we watch them is to watch Jonathan work them out and to watch the story unfold!
If you have never seen Jonathan Creek before then let me fill you in about the show and the character. He works for a magician called Adam Klaus, designing the tricks for his show. Jonathan has a very anylitical mind and after meeting Maddy, a crime journanlist, ... ...impossible crimes.
Jonathan Creek is very well written. It has some very funny moments in it and always keeps you thinking. There is an enormous element of triumph when you work one out before he does (although to be fair, this has only happened to me twice!) and it will keep you interested from beginning until end of each episode.
The acting of Alan Davis and Caroline Quentin is superb. I find it very easy to distinguish Jonathan Creek from Alan ...

Alan Davies plays Jonathan Creek superbly, witty, dry humour and ever so dopey.
Caroline Quentin shines as big mouth, brass Maddy. She's so bitchy, jealous and mean to Jonathan, but hilarious!
The storylines really do leave you thinking "HOW ON EARTH?!" but there's always an explanation you never managed to crack yourself.
Adam Klaus the magician is also humourous, the mans a walking joke and he provides funny little side storylines.
... ...departs, and Carla, aka Julia Sawahla, joins. I found her increasingly irratating and made me have pangs for Maddy to return! Carla is the 'sexy' one, also mean like Maddy, but full of bravada to carry it off. Frankly I found her to be an irratating bore.
Other than that, great telly that will have you glued to your set with a nice glass of wine/bottle of beer, some Kettle crips and a big box of chocs - Perfect comfort watching Tv - Perfect for ...

Advantages: Alan Davies, great mix of Comedy and Mystery Disadvantages: Series 3-4 not as good as first two
...logical thinking mind of magician Jonathan Creek (Alan Davies) is called upon to sort things out. You may think this is like most other run-of -the-mill murder/mystery series but what sets it apart is the quite frankly mind-boggling murder situations, and the manner in which is presented really does more than hold your attention all the way through to the end. This is mainly due to the Jonathan's female crimewriter/"sidekick" (Caroline Quentin and ... ...understandable but never quite right. Jonathan on the other hand - being the crime solver extraordinaire - seemingly unravels the murder cases early on but doesn't tell until the very end. This makes for a slightly frustrating but gripping drama series that you can actually watch more than once. Even though you know 'who dun it' , it is always interesting to watch out for the more subtle clues that are left to tease the fact you missed it the first ...

Advantages: Gripping crime and mystery thrillers one after another Disadvantages: May have to cancel any other appointments during the day!
The classic Series 1 and Series 2 of the award-winning mystery thriller JonathanCreek does not disappoint, and the fact that it now comes on DVD allows for a better audience experience than ever before.
Disc One shows the "originals" of JonathanCreek whereby the writers and cast members are setting down the successful stones that the show was built upon.
My particular favourite from the first disc being the "Jack in the Box" episode where Jonathan and Maddy investigate the supposed suicide of the 'comedian' Jack Holiday in one of the more grisly murder investigations that any of the series have seen. The ultimate unbelievable twist is combined brilliantly with Jonathan's superb story-telling to comprise a delicious ending to the case.
Other mentions from the first disc include "No Trace of Tracey" episode where a young ...
Advantages: Excently priced, good old fashioned entertainment Disadvantages: No DVD extras
JonathanCreek was almost something I had grown up with, turning into somewhat of a cult show during the late 90?s. So, when I found a DVDboxset life looked up, and with good reason. Put simply, this DVDset is seriously worth a look, with its combination of comedy, intrigue and mystery JonathanCreek is a must have for any mystery lover.
Starring Alan Davies as Jonathan, the magician?s assistant and Caroline Quentin as Maddy the investigative journalist the pair strike up an unlikely bond. From his windmill home, the unlikely pairing of Creek and Maddy take on an array of unfathomable cases that would trouble Hercule Poirot, but are no problem for the magical mind of Jonathan. The first series contains five one hour mysteries, the second again the same number but with the inclusion of a two part special. Retailing at £24.99 in ...
From the often bizarre pen of ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE writer David Renwick comes the entire first four series of this very popular drama series from the BBC. Working from his home in a converted windmill, Jonathan Creek (Alan Davies) is a magician with a natural ability for solving puzzles. He soon puts this ability to another use--solving murders. Together with encouraging sidekick played by Caroline Quentin, and later Julia Sawalha, Jonathan is called upon to solve a series of what appear to be unsolveable crimes.
