Big Corporations, the Yakuza, mind implants and a technological plague known as the Black Shakes. Johnny Mnemonic is a film set in the near dark future - you can almost see that the future is possible, with the power now wielded by massive companies and the criminal fraternity turning to more legitimate business.
Johnny himself, played by Keanu Reeves (acting as woodenly as usual) is a mnemonic courier. He has had part of his memory replaced by a silicon implant enabling him to smuggle information undetected. He is planning to get out of the business as he wants his memories returning to him. To do this he takes on one last job (don't they always) unfortunately he has to overload his brain which gives him a limited time to download the data before his mind explodes.
To preserve the security of the data he instructs his employers to select three random images from the TV, print them out and fax them to the destination. Unfortunately the Yakuza arrive to get back the information that he is about to carry. His employers are killed before they can fax off the details. Johnny gets one image, one is taken by the Yakuza and the other is destroyed.
The rest of the film involves Johnny trying to reach his destination to download the data - which turns out to be a cure for the Black Shakes - he is chased by the Yakuza and a mad cyborg monk. He is aided in his quest by Dina Meyer and Ice T.
The theory of the film has promise, but doesn't come through with the goods. Keanu Reeves is no different from any of his other characters - even when he's angry he doesn't show any emotion - he merely raises his voice. Dina Meyer is gorgeous, but her attraction to Johnny is incomprehensible. Ice T just seems bored by the whole thing.
I watched it on TV so I never spent anything to watch it. I would have been very upset if I'd rented it out or even bought it.
