William Gibsons work was never going to be easy to convert to film, and his short story from 'Burning Chrome' is no exception. Keanu Reeves is Johnny Mnemonic, a courier that delivers via an implant in his head. Trouble is he has just downloaded dodgy goods, and people are after him for various reasons.
If this sounds deliberately vague it is meant to be. The story is different in some places to the book, and some characters have been added or changed. To be really sure of what is going on you need to suspend disbelief and immerse yourself in the incredible virtual world that Gibson would have us inhabit.

My advice is to read the novel first and then you will appreciate the vision that Gibson has, and marvel that although the film is not that good, any celluloid interpretation is better than none at all, and then you will read all his other works and demand that more movies will be made...
Or you will probably see it as a weak sci fi film that you didnt understand what was going on, and thought that Reeves was wooden and the dolphin was terrible. Like i first did... I dont think id recommend it as a stand alone movie as it is not really strong enough to stand on its own like that. For Gibson enthusiasts only i fear. Read and be enlightened, my friends....

...data out is destroyed, meaning johnny will die within three days.
trying to get the data out, and also being hunted down, johnny meets a woman who will help him, but who also has the deadly disease.
by the end of the film i was bored, and wanted it to hurry up and finish, it wasnt a great ending considering all of his problems were solved by a dolphin.
all in all i wish i hadnt wasted my money.

...known as the Black Shakes. Johnny Mnemonic is a film set in the near dark future - you can almost see that the future is possible, with the power now wielded by massive companies and the criminal fraternity turning to more legitimate business.
Johnny himself, played by Keanu Reeves (acting as woodenly as usual) is a mnemonic courier. He has had part of his memory replaced by a silicon implant enabling him to smuggle information undetected. He is ... ...can fax off the details. Johnny gets one image, one is taken by the Yakuza and the other is destroyed.
The rest of the film involves Johnny trying to reach his destination to download the data - which turns out to be a cure for the Black Shakes - he is chased by the Yakuza and a mad cyborg monk. He is aided in his quest by Dina Meyer and Ice T.
The theory of the film has promise, but doesn't come through with the goods. Keanu Reeves is no different ...

Advantages: Keanu Reeves stars Disadvantages: Not out on DVD format yet
Johnny Mnemonic - Starring Keanu Reeves - with a memory chip inside of his skull. This film made me stop and think about the growing trend of technology towards bio tech integration. It's already happening just look at the medical advances in the news. Anyway, I found this film to be very entertaining and I felt sorry for the character having to give up his childhood memories in order to have the memory storage chip installed. The plot was also good ... ...Man's ability to overcome the odds, and win in the nick of time. I would love to own this film on DVD but it hasn't been released on this format yet. When it is I shall definatley be buying it as soon as I see it on the shelves. If you haven't seen this film yet, I recommend that you do so as soon as possible. Keanu Reeves in a great film. ...

Advantages: Just a great film, with some great performances Disadvantages: Few and far between
THIS IS A GOOD FILM!
I apologise for the use of capitals above, but I had to get this point across. This film has received some extremely harsh criticism, but it is a very good film.
Keanu Reeves is very good. Ice-T is excellent, as is Dina Meyer. Dolph Lungram makes an appearance too, as a somewhat unorthodox preacher, or mad murderous mostly non-human psycho! What a cast!
The story line is something a little different. Its set in the future ... ...securely via the Internet so some humans, act as couriers, carrying the information in their head, on implanted chips. It all sounds a little far fetched, but it really does work.
Keanu Reeves plays one of these carriers, and exceeds his memory capacity. As it starts to leak, he nneds to get the information out of his head before it kills him, while some want to get the information themselves, and some just want it destroyed, Keanos head and all.

Advantages: The best DVD around, amazing Bullet Time Technology Disadvantages: Very difficult to understand until the end
If ever a film was made to show off the DVD format, this is it! Stunning special effects, a storming soundtrack and Keanu Reeves finally erasing the memory of the dire JohnnyMnemonic and that stupid talking dolphin! Everything about The Matrix oozes class - every special effect has been painstakingly created, the script is tight as a drum and the acting totally believable. You really don't need to know anything about the plot; in fact it's probably a better experience for not knowing. Basically, if you have even the slightest interest in sci-fi or action movies then this is a must see movie. To top it all off, the DVD itself shows what can be done with this format when the studio's use their imagination. Behind the scenes documentaries, commentaries, and some fascinating looks at how the best effects sequences were filmed make this ...

Advantages: Good central performance Disadvantages: Poor secondary characters
whatever attempts the director had made initially to address some serious points about the darker side of modern society they are lost as the film descends in to run of the mill Hollywood fare.
The soundtrack by Mychael Danna is both solemn and high tempo when required and provides a good atmospheric audio backdrop to the action but it will not stay in you memory for long and Danna has produced better work in some other of his films like The Ice Storm, JohnnyMnemonic and Exotica.
AVAILABILITY
The film is available in both VHS and DVD format priced from Amazon.co.uk at £5.99 and £12.99 respectively.
The CD soundtrack is only available in the US.
FINAL THOUGHTS
In the end I had mixed feeling about this film. It was as are so many well-intentioned Hollywood films, a missed opportunity ...

DVD Description
Loosely based on a story by cyber-pioneer William Gibson, this futuristic thriller centres on a the title character played by Keanu Reeves, a courier who uploads vital data straight into his hard-drive of a brain for storage and safe transport. Johnny has given up brainspace that his childhood memories occupied in order to save space for his chosen profession. He wants to pull one last job before he retires, and the one he gets is particularly perilous. He's got 48 hours to transport a large load of data from Beijing to the United States--and some futuristic samurai don't want him to make it to his destination! The directorial debut of conceptual artist Robert Longo is full of arresting visuals painting a bleak, yet eye-popping, vision of the future.
