for democracy - at any cost. But one American soldier has paid a price beyond measure. And within the disfigured flesh that was once a vision of youth lives a spirit that cannot accept what the world has become. An immediate bestseller upon its first publication in 1939 Trumbo's stark profoundly troubling masterpiece about the horrors of the First World War brilliantly crystallized the uncompromising brutality of war and became the most influential protest novel of the Vietnam era as timely as ever.

The name Johnny got his Gun was an American propaganda call for rallying young men to subscribe to the military.
Plot A young soldier, Joe Bonham, is hit by a mortar shell on the last day of World War One and subsequently loses all of his limbs and all of his senses along with the ability to speak though his mind functions perfectly leaving him a prisoner in his own crippled body. As the story progresses it details how Joe slowly realises his condition and starts to slowly go crazy and attempts to kill himself but is incapable. He also forms a bond with a nurse who realises that his mind is still functioning and tries to help him but to no avail. Throughout the story we see flash backs and images from Joe’s child hood and memories from his short time in the war and the last days he spent with his girlfriend.
The plot is very emotional as we see Joe’s plight and we are made to realise the horrors and the futility of war as we see this young man who has a happy future ahead of him cowering in a muddy mortar crater, scared out of his mind until his entire life is taken away in an instant an ironically on the last day of the war.
The way the film is laid out is great, it is pieced together slowly and we see how Joe copes with his condition through a variety of ways but it all comes slowly and leaves you thinking, ‘well, then what happened’. In my opinion the film is truly amazing and very thought provoking.
I first heard of this film through the American heavy metal/ thrash band Metallica’s first music video One and I highly recommend that you watch this for an overview of the film in a very dramatic way. An epic video.

DVD Description
Dalton Trumbo adapts and directs his own novel. A moving drama which realistically depicts the horrors and evil of war. A youthful combatant suffers horrific shell damage on the last day of the First World War. He is so horribly wounded and disfigured--his legs and arms amputated, his eyes, ears, nose and mouth destroyed--that he begs to be allowed to die. Still conscious and full of reason, he asks that he be used as a shocking demonstration of the horrors of war.
