Director: Peter Howitt Producer: Tim Bevan, Mark Huffam and Eric Fellner. Writers: Neal Purvis, William Davies and Robert Wade. Stars: Rowan Atkinson, Ben Miller, John Malkovich and Natalie Imbruglia
This cracking comedy was released in the summer of 2003, the main character, Johnny English, basing himself self on a character originally created for a well known credit card company adverts.
Johnny English, (played by Rowan Atkinson both on the adverts and this movie) is a British secret service member, spoofing the likes of James Bond. Unfortunately, he is as competent as Inspector Jacques Clouseau (from the Pink Panther films) which does lead him into some tricky situations.
His partner, Bough, pronounced 'Boff', (played by Ben Miller) is the silent hero of the movie, always allowing Johnny to take full credit for everything, although taking the stick for any wrong doing.
**BRIEF PLOT**
When a terrorist plot wipes put all but one of Britain's secret agents the country has to call on the only survivor, Johnny English, to stop the theft of the crown jewels.
Johnny English and his right hand man, Bough, are assigned to try and reveal the thief's identity and bring him to justice. With Johnny strongly believing that the thief is actually a respected French entrepreneur Pascal Sauvage, (played by John Malkocich) he has much trouble trying to convince his superiors with out any evidence.
Whilst protecting the Crown Jewels as they are being shown at a formal gathering, Johnny mind wanders as he is smitten by a mysterious lady named Lorna Campbell, (played by Natalie Imbruglia), who turns out to be more than she lets on, the Jewels are taken from under everyone's noses.
With Johnny truly believing that Pascal is behind the whole thing he infiltrates the French mans business headquarters in London, (after a comical but very embarrassing first attempt) and Château in France to reveal the truth behind the entire plan for domination of the world….
**IN CONCLUSION**
What a fantastically comical movie.
Rowan Atkinson is a funny man at the best of times, with his ability to look as though his face is made of rubber, and using him in this type of spoof James Bond movie was a genius idea by the writers.
Most of the movie will have you laughing or even crying. There is a great scene in a cemetery with a mistaken identity embarrassing Johnny English until Bough comes to the rescue. But there are some scenes that are a little stomach turning in a comical way.
There is no real violence within the movie so the younger viewers can watch, although a lot of the comedy will go straight over the little ones heads.
The one scene to certainly entertain the younger members of the audience involves Johnny climbing through a sewer pipe and a lot of French mans poop????? (I'm an adult an d I found that bit totally hilarious, my kids did the usual urrrggghh???)
It is a sort of Mr Bean meets Mr Bond and merges into one to solve the crime of the century….. The outcome is inevitable considering Mr Bean is involved.
With action, adventure, romance and the traditional car chase, (of sorts, involving a recovery van and a motorcycle), the film has everything that is required for a good nights viewing.
The queen of England, makes a sort of appearance, although her face is never shown, (it's not really her, it's a double of course, as the real queen was busy at the time of filming, apparently), and is the brunt of some of Johnny's mishaps.
Would I recommend this movie? Yes I certainly would. It has everything a movie needs and a whole lot more. If you like Rowan Atkinson and you love the slapstick antics that he creates then this movie is for you.
Go for it… you wont be disappointed.
