Production Year: 2002 - Thriller - Director: Matt Dillon - Original Language: English - Classification: 15 years and over - Starring: Matt Dillon, James Caan, Natascha McElhone, Gerard Depardieu, Sereyvuth Kem, Stellan Skarsgard
Plot: Three features. 'From Hell', 'Edward Scissorhands' and 'Before Night Falls' which chronicles the life of Reinaldo Arenas, an exiled Cuban homosexual writer, adapted from his own memoirs, and directed by Julian Schnabel ('Basquiat'). Javier Bardem (in an Oscar-nominated performance) portrays Arenas as he journeys from poverty to university to the sexual revolution and homosexual subculture in Havana to persecution and imprisonment under the policies of Fidel Castro for being both gay and a writer. Despite the harsh conditions of prison, the courageous Arenas continued not only to write but also to publish his works abroad. Ultimately, he was allowed to leave Cuba for America, but there he faced new struggles as a man without a country battling AIDS. Schnabel's beautifully filmed sophomore directorial effort captures the essence of Cuba during the revolution. Johnny Depp is featured in the dual supporting roles of the cross-dressing prison inmate, Bon Bon, and the brutal officer, Lieutenant Victor. A well-disguised Sean Penn appears as Cuco Sanchez. Olivier Martinez as Lazaro Gomez Carillo and Andrea Di Stefano as Pepe Malas deliver standout performances. The film received accolades at the 2000 Venice and Toronto Film Festivals.

Advantages: Good plot, and some excellent visuals Disadvantages: Some of the acting
...As a woman reads to her granddaughter one winters night, she recalls the story of a strange character from a nearby gothic mansion who she once fell in love with. Kim is now elderly and looks longingly out of the window. When her mother Peg discovered a boy who has scissors for hands living alone in the mansion, she brings him down into the town to live with the family. Instantly, the local neighbourhood are intruigued by Edward, and set about finding out about the mystery guest. As it happens, Edward is a creation of the elderly inventor who owned the mansion on the hill, and before he had a chance to give Edward prosthetic hands, he died. But Edward's flare for inventive haircuts and gardening make him the perfect houseguest and he finds himself in demand by the local housewives. However, a brush with the law, and a proclaimation...

...doesn?t make him a normal person, and that Edward never will be a normal person, as long as he is a ?creation? and as long as he has his giant Scissorhands.
I think that the aim of the director was to setEdward as an outsider, and he certainly achieved this using a number of methods throughout the film. To do this he used camera angles ? with things like showing Edward?s massive Scissorhands, makeup and clothing ? where we saw Edwards black clothes and gothic pale facial makeup and also a lot of the feeling of Edward being an outsider came fromJohnnyDepp?s facial expressions, when he would look nervous around people, or act strange in the company of others because he was an outsider, and he wasn?t used to it.
My Opinion
I think that the film is very easy to get into, and although the storyline isn?t that complex it is a film...

Advantages: The ultimate cult-classic Disadvantages: The story is too daft and far fetched for some people
...unnerved by some of the strange imagery.
On the back is a brief story synopsis and a picture of Edward looking out of the castle window forms the backdrop. There are a couple of stills from the film and it lists the famous actors who appear in the picture.
This disc has a few special features which are pretty average, to be honest, and these are on the same disc as the film (some come separate). They include: Tim Burton Commentary (the best feature o here by far and well worth a listen); Danny Elfman Commentary (he directed the wonderful music than accompanies the film); Featurette; Interview Clips (see JohnnyDepp as a dashing young man!); 2 Trailers (watch these before the film to raise your excitement); Spanish TV Spots; Concept Artwork (also interesting). I only paid about £2 more for the special feature presentation than the standard...
