life chronicle of one of the most remarkable events in American history. At the Alamo - a crumbling adobe mission - 185 exceptional men joined together in a sacred pact: they would stand firm against an army of 7 000 and willingly give their lives for freedom. Filmed entirely in Texas only a few miles from the site of the actual battle The Alamo is a visually stunning and historically accurate celebration of courage and honour. Co-starring Richard Widmark Laurence Harvey and Chill Wills and garnering seven Oscar nominations it is a truly memorable movie spectacle. Horse Soldiers: John Wayne teams with William Holden and eminent western director John Ford for this frontier actioner. Written by John Lee Mahin and Martin Rackin this faithful representation of one of the most daring cavalry exploits in history is both a moving tribute to the men who fought and died in that bloody war and a powerful action-packed drama. Based on an actual Civil War incident The Horse Soldiers tells the rousing tale of a troop of Union Soldiers who force their way deep into Southern territory to destroy a rebel stronghold at Newton Station. In command is hardbitten Colonel Marlowe (Wayne) a man who is strikingly contrasted by the company's gentle surgeon (Holden) and the beautiful but crafty Southern belle (Constance Towers) who's forced to accompany the Union raiders on perhaps the most harrowing mission in the war. Two great stars strike sparks from each other as Wayne's character is strikingly contrasted with Doc William Holden's pacifistic company surgeon. With its rousing musical score The Horse Soldiers is a moving tribute to those who fought in the brutal cavalry exploits of the US Civil War. Red River: John Wayne is Tom Dunson a cattle baron who built his ranch with hard work and a determination to kill any man who would dare try to take his land. But when plummeting livestock values endanger his beloved ranch Tom and his adopted son set out to get a fair price for their cattle by driving them through the treacherous Chisholm Trail from Texas to Kansas. Battling Indians stampedes and dissention among the ranch hands Tom proves that he'll stop at nothing to reach his destination. He'll risk danger hardship betrayal and perhaps even his own sanity...

Advantages: good story, good acting Disadvantages: None from me and hubby
agree with this.
There are no extra features on the DVD which we have, this is not great loss to me as I am not into watching them anyway. We paid around the £5 mark for our DVD on EBay so do shop around for a good price.
I am going to recommend this film as it does have a good story, great acting and it does not star JohnWayne! ...

Advantages: Ward Bond and Wayne act well together Disadvantages: Dodgy backdrops!
My husband is a JohnWayne fan and I have been purchasing DVD's for him whenever I see then on offer but I have never allowed him to sit and watch them with me there are I don't like the whole cowboy and Indian theme. As there has been nothing on the television lately I have relented and have let him start watching them!
During JohnWayne's career he made well over 100 films, Hondo is a film he made midway through this time.
THE FILM
The beginning of the film see Hondo Lane, played by JohnWayne arriving at a ranch in the middle of nowhere where he is seeking a new horse as he lost his last one when he came up against the Apache. When he gets to the ranch he is greeted by Angie Lowe, played by Geraldine Page and her son Johnny, played by Lee Aaker. Angie tells Hondo that he may purchase one of her horses but he will have to ...
Advantages: It is a classic. Perfect Sunday afternoon film. Disadvantages: Hard to believe that this was made nearly 50 years agao.
tied to his contract at another studio. Oh and if you wondered why JohnWayne looks so big in the film, it was because the sets were recreated to 7/8 scale, so the focal emphasis was on the performers to make them look larger than life.
Rio Bravo is a beautifully shot film by Howard Hawks, who teamed up with JohnWayne a number of times on various films such as Hitari, RedRiver and Rio Lobo, which was his last film. One of the best things is that the film is down to earth and an absolute pleasure to watch whether it is on a Sunday afternoon or a weekday evening.
At the time of release the film did not necessarily perform as well as expected and was considered an underrated production, but with more recent showings on TV and Satellite as well as VHS and DVD releases it has now attained the credibility deserved of the film.

DVD Description
Features three John Wayne’s classics: THE ALAMO, THE HORSE SOLDIERS and RED RIVER.
THE ALAMO – The Duke directs (with the uncredited help of his friend and mentor John Ford) this flag-waving spectacular about the courageous struggle by 182 American heroes to defend a small Catholic mission to the death and eventually win Texas with the help of Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and Sam Houston. The restored, widescreen edition of Wayne's epic is at the original length and includes the theatrical trailer. Academy Award Nominations: 7, including Best Picture, Best Song (Green Leaves of Summer). Academy Awards: Best Sound. This restored version contains extra footage, previously unseen.
THE HORSE SOLDIERS – THE HORSE SOLDIERS, John Ford's only attempt at tackling the subject of the Civil War, is based on Grierson's Raid, part of the Union's assault on Vicksburg in April 1863. After a number of failed efforts at taking the Southern stronghold, Union leaders assign Col. John Marlowe (John Wayne), a railroad designer in civilian life, to lead a cavalry detachment to destroy a vital railroad hub at Newton Station, far behind Confederate lines. Marlowe's unit includes Major Kendall (William Holden), a cynical physician disgusted by the notion that there's glory in the carnage, and the politically ambitious Colonel Secord (Willis Bouchey). Marlowe temporarily appropriates the plantation of Southerner Hannah Hunter (Constance Towers) while in transit and is forced to take her along, in lieu of killing her, after she overhears his plans for Newton Station. As their journey continues, Marlowe realises that he is much more interested in Hannah than in her political sympathies.
RED RIVER – RED RIVER, Howard Hawks's masterpiece, is one of the greatest Westerns ever filmed, a saga of obsession and rivalry between a man and his adoptive son amid an epic struggle for survival in the Old West. Tom Dunson (John Wayne) journeys west to Texas to build a cattle empire and adopts Matthew Garth, a young boy orphaned by an Indian raid. Years later, Matthew (Montgomery Clift) returns from the Civil War and joins Dunson on a massive cattle drive north undertaken to avoid financial ruin. Stampedes and Indian attacks build tension, but it is Dunson's iron-fisted leadership that causes the most problems, finally bringing the action to a boiling point that pits father against son.
