Seven great films in one box set, of one of the greatest cowboys to hit the silverscreen.
From a long film career and many movies made, this is just a sample of the great mans work, the man they called the Duke.
Alongside Wayne, a host of big name stars including, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Dean Martin, Lee Marvin, Robert Mitchum, James Stewart, James Caan, Jack Warden, Lauren Bacall and many more.
I won't go into too much detail about the films, just a brief description, as there are the seven films, it sometimes spoils the film anyway if you give too much of the film away.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
A bungling but charming big city lawyer is determined to rid the town of Shinbone of its number one bad guy, Liberty Valance. An early film also starring James Stewart.
The Sons Of Katie Elder
Katie Elder had four sons, and after she dies, they come home to pay their respects at her funeral. John Wayne is the eldest and toughest son who is a gunslinger, Dean Martin, is a poker player who can also use a gun when the need arises. Earl Holliman is the quiet one, no one ever called him yellow to his face twice, and Michael Anderson Jnr is the youngest, and most respected of the Texans.
El Dorado
Robert Mitchum plays the drunken alchoholic who battles against the demon drink, Ruthless cattle barons and crooked businessmen in the wild west town of El Dorado. John Wayne is his old friend and Deputy sheriff who helps him bring justice via a few gunfights, lots of action, and humour in this great film.
Hatari
Here John Wayne leaves the stetson for a bush hat, as he plays a big game hunter, not a ruthless killer, but a trapper for zoo parks and circus attractions, lots of great scenes where man pits wits against beast.
Donovan's Reef
John Waynes life on a remote Pacific Island could'nt be any better for two former navy buddies, until a long comes a beautiful young girl in search of her father.
True Grit
One of Waynes best films which deservedly won him an oscar for playing the stubbon old marshal Rooster Cogburn, he is hired to track down the killers of a young and equally stubbon young ladys father, who murdered him and made off with the family savings.
The Shootist
Possibly John Waynes last film, in which he plays an old and legendary gunslinger, who is terminally ill, he returns to a quiet town called Carson City, to seek medical attention from an old friend Dr Hostetler. Knowing he has not got long to live, he seeks refuge in a widows boardinghouse, but the peace does'nt last long and becomes involved in one more gunfight,
Anyone who likes westerns would enjoy these films and even the films without, some of John Waynes finest.
I would recommend this box set for anyone looking to buy a collection of great films as a gift for their dad, granddad, brother or son, prices vary the rrp is £59.99 ($120) to as cheap as £18 ($36) brand new.
