John Tucker Must Die
I rarely watch a film the whole through if I don’t enjoy it so there must have been something about the predictability of this film that I enjoyed, although I am yet to discover which part of this 90 minute disaster kept me until the end.
John Tucker
The film is as you may be able to tell from the incredibly vague (sarcastic) title is an American Teen flick about a young guy called John Tucker who has managed to work his way through a large majority of his school’s girls. Three of them discover that (shock horror) he is a player, and they work along with another girl to bring John Tucker down, at first by humiliating him in front of his peers to jeopardise his popularity, but when this fails they work together to manipulate him into falling in love with the quieter member of their group and they film and record their progress to ultimately bring him down in the end by ‘breaking his heart’.
Cast
Jesse Metcalfe plays John Tucker, I Already dislike Jesse Metcalfe from the sleazy part that he played in Desperate Housewives and so
I was not that impressed with watching him in a leading role. Although I do not completely disregard Jesse Metcalfe as an actor, this role of a dumb sports player suited him fine and although I do not want to judge him completely I found that he seemed to struggle even with this simple role which is most likely very similar to his own personality.
Brittany Snow plays Kate who is the innocent girl who gets coaxed into the plan to destroy John Tucker, her acting isn’t as bad as Metcalfe’s and although she pulls of a genuinely sweet and naïve character in which I can see the director was aiming to portray I could not help being annoyed most of the time by her chirpy and for want of a better word dumb character.
Ashanti plays Heather, as per usual Ashanti manages to pull off her character pretty well, she is one of my favourite people in the movie as she is one of the only cast members who seems to make an effort at genuine emotion, mainly attitude, and also manages to pull off a few comedy moments, however rare they are.
Sophia Bush is definitely an actress who I enjoy watching on screen although this role just furthers my suspicions that she is in fact only good for playing a pointless and shallow bitch. In John Tucker must die she manages to play Beth effortlessly but I cannot help but think that this is because she has played similar roles before and her role was pretty similar to he Brooke character in One Tree Hill.
Arielle Kebbel plays Carrie which is a pretty small part but again pretty disappointing, especially since after her performance in American Pies’ Band Camp I would have expected her to take her character more lightly and maybe mix it up a bit with some comedy.
All of the characters were disappointing really, none of them have any depth and most of them are completely stereotypical however of course this is what we have come to expect from American Teen Movies.
Romance
This film is supposed to be a romantic comedy however I cannot remember any genuinely romantic moments, I can see where their could have been a few so I am assuming that the director failed with this.
I think that maybe if the writers had managed to come up with a tear jerking or amazingly romantic ending it would have completely turned the film around from floppy and shallow to cheesy and cute and I think that any of the films potential was ruined by either a low budget or a short deadline, as I cannot help but feel that this film flopped big time.
Audience
After watching this film I tried to imagine if it was something that I would enjoy as a 16 year old and I think that honestly even at 16 I would have seen straight through it and saw it for the predictable rubbish that it is. However, I still watched it and was surprisingly semi entertained by it, even if it was just a time passer. I would recommend this to teenagers and teenagers only although the film held small gems of amusement it was nothing to get my mind working and there were no classic comedy moments to bring its ratings up.
Recommended?
Films like this are what fuel spoofs like ‘Not another teen movie’ which completely rip apart the pointless and stereotyped teen films that are ten a penny nowadays, but I cannot help but thinking that this particular teen movie was completely disappointing and not even worth making into a 30 second spoof. There are films out there which end up with far higher rating that have similar storylines and this is most likely because the director has made more effort and the cast have connected better. I do not recommend this film but if you have seen it then please let me know your feelings!
