John Tucker Must Die is a teen comedy about four girls trying to get revenge on the school?s three timing basketball captain. Three of the girls are the ones he cheated on: Heather (Ashanti), the head cheerleader; Beth (Sophia Bush), the environmental vegan activist; and Carrie (Arielle Kebbel), intellectual school journalist. They were never supposed to find out about each other, but that would make for a pretty dull film so they do. The fourth girl is invisible school newcomer Kate (Brittany Snow), who is the one who unites three very different personalities together in a quest for revenge. To begin with this consists of a pulling a few pranks, with emphasis on the ?few?. After these fail they come up with a master plan that nobody was expecting ? get the new unpopular girl to date John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe), with the help of her new popular friends.
The plot is very common and unoriginal, but it?s not overly important in a film like this. People watch for the humour. As long as it?s funny it doesn?t matter that we all know exactly what the ending will be five minutes in. In this case the jokes are a bit hit and miss. It was funny in places, but there were a few times where it tried way too hard to get laughs. One instance that springs to mind involves a prank the girls play by mixing oestrogen supplements into John Tucker?s protein supplements, which causes him to act very feminine in the space of a few seconds. It?s things like this that bring the movie down, if only because the brain is quietly muttering ?oh please? while the scene unfolds. This idea is made worse by the movie having a grand total of two pranks (this and one other) before slipping completely into the formulaic dating plot line we?re all familiar with. Surely they could come up with something better than this.
The best laughs come from a few one liners the characters say rather than events such as the one described above. This is because lines are said only once and it is rare that they?re ever repeated. The film tended to milk events too much, sometimes doing the same joke again and again. This was over kill, and raises some questions about the writing for the film. Did they recycle jokes because they ran out of ideas?
The acting was very average. Except for Sophia Bush and perhaps Penn Badgley (who played the Other Tucker, Scott: a very small role), no one really stood out in a positive manner. Jesse Metcalfe is quite limited in his acting ability, but it?s easy to look past this as he?s so good looking. He did fit in well here though I?ll give him that. Brittany Snow had the lead female role as Kate, and was pretty uninspiring. Her awkwardness worked fine at the start of the movie as she was supposed to be quite plain. However, after her character underwent a transformation courtesy of the other three girls I would have expected some kind of reflection of this in the way her character was played. She remained very dull and bland. Ashanti as Heather was average. It wasn?t the worst switch from singing to acting that I?ve seen, but she should probably stick to singing as a career. Sophia Bush (Beth) was very good. She was the most entertaining to watch, in part because of the amount of funny lines she had, and she had the most presence out of the four girls. Arielle Kebbel did a good job as the journalist but her performance was nothing to rave about.
I did like the range of different characters the film used with the three girls. I realise that they?re all quite clichéd, but I?d rather they did it like this than have three very similar popular girls. It allowed for some distinct personalities and more original jokes between the three; an option I would have liked the writers to have exploited more.
I?m not a big fan of teen comedies, but I?m sure there are better movies of this genre around. It?s not a film I?d consider a must see, even for fans of teen comedies. However, as sure as I am that I?ll never watch this film again, it did move at quite a quick pace. It was this that kept me watching as I felt the film was at least moving along towards a resolution. It was fairly entertaining and light hearted, and it filled a slot of spare time I had that needed filling in a relaxing way.
If it?s on and you have nothing better to do it might be worth a glance, but it?s not something to arrange your day around.
Advantages: funny, good characters, fairly original idea Disadvantages: probably too shallow and fluffy for some

== John Tucker Must Die == I rarely watch a film the whole through if I don’t enjoy it so there must have been something about the predictability of this film that I enjoyed, although I am yet to discover which part of this 90 minute disaster kept me until the end. === John Tucker === The film is as you may be able to tell from the incredibly vague (sarcastic) title is an American Teen flick about a young guy called John Tucker who has managed to ... ...with another girl to bring John Tucker down, at first by humiliating him in front of his peers to jeopardise his popularity, but when this fails they work together to manipulate him into falling in love with the quieter member of their group and they film and record their progress to ultimately bring him down in the end by ‘breaking his heart’. === Cast === Jesse Metcalfe plays John Tucker, I Already dislike Jesse Metcalfe from the sleazy part that ...

John Tucker Must die was my girlfriends choice of a good funny moive that she wanted to watch. I was told i had made the movie choice far to often recently and she would pick the movie she wants to watch.

Advantages: It's not very long Disadvantages: Poor script, bland perfromances and mediocre direction
Furtado's "Maneater" to Cheap Trick, The Cure and Elvis Costello. There is a heavy reliance on the now fashionable punk pop genre, including a rehash of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time". So it fits with the current trend for all things 80s, but means the soundtrack will go out of style as swiftly as the incomprehensibly large wardrobes of the female characters.
"JohnTuckerMustDie" is yet another forgettable addition to the teen movie genre. It will no doubt coast by on the stud muffin reputation of its leading man, but unless you're dying to see Metcalfe in a ladies' thong, I wouldn't rush out to see it. The direction is uninspired, the script cobbled together from stolen ideas and the performances patchy at beast. Had it shown a little more originality or even a shred of personality, it might have been more than mediocre. ...

DVD Description
John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe) is a high school basketball star dating three different girls at the same time: the activist vegan (Sophia Bush), the over-achieving blonde journalist (Arielle Kebbel), and the sassy cheerleading squad captain (Ashanti). They all find out about each other and with the help of the shy new girl in school, Kate (Brittany Snow), they plot a devious revenge. After various other plots fail (such as spiking his protein powder with estrogen), the girls decide to combine their knowledge to make Kate into the perfect seduction machine and break Tucker's heart. In classic DANGEROUS LIAISONS/CRUEL INTENTIONS style, Kate becomes the talk of the school, but may end up becoming everything she used to hate. It's an amalgam of patented teen comedy formulas, but director Betty Thomas (BRING IT ON, 28 DAYS) keeps the story jumping along in fine order: no pop song montages of trying on different outfits, no soap opera angst and no parental moralising. It's all chocolate, bra-cams, basketball games, food fights, and a wealth of quotable put-downs. Metcalfe makes a perfect Tucker, a character who--to the movie's credit--is not as bad as all that. Penn Bagdley quietly steals some scenes as John's less popular brother, a music snob/slacker who falls for Kate while assisting her in science experiments. Jenny McCarthy is in fine form as Kate's hot mum, cursed with her own weakness for smooth talking men.
