Scarlet(1968) and preceding the little-knownThe Secret Service(1969). In 2112 professor Ian McClaine has invented the BIG RAT (Brain Impulse Galvanoscope, Record And Transfer), a machine for copying knowledge and experiences from person to person. WIN (World Intelligence Organisation) uses this to prime their top undercover agent before sending him into the field on missions which range from foiling international terrorists to recovering a nuclear weapon from beneath the polar ice. So far so good, but in perhaps the most mind-boggling concept ever to reach children's TV, that agent is McClaine's nine-year-old adopted son, Joe.Somehow even as it stays true to the Gerry Anderson techno-fantasy formula of secret organisations, gadgetry, and action-packed adventure full of spectacular explosions and violent death,Joe 90remains blithely unconscious of its own implications. The missions are as globe-trotting as anything in Anderson's classicThunderbirdsseries, and sometimes Joe does save lives, performing a risky brain operation or rescuing trapped astronauts. Yet even then his criminally irresponsible father brainwashes the lad each episode before placing him in a highly dangerous adult situation. Though the production values remain way ahead of anything else being done on British TV at the time, the question remains how did this ever seem like a good idea?On the DVD:Joe 90comes complete in a five-disc box set of the entire 30-episode series. Each disc contains six 25-minute episodes presented, as usual with Gerry Anderson DVDs, behind a lovingly crafted menu. As expected the 4:3 picture quality is superb and the mono sound is full, detailed and without a trace of distortion. Each disc contains several pages of character biography and background information on the show, a photo gallery and varied extras such as location stills or a gallery of promotional images. --Gary S Dalkin

The premise was simple, Genius professor Ian McClaine had created the B.I.G.R.A.T. device, Brain Impulse Galvanoscope Record And Transfer, which can download directly into the brain the special qualities needed to complete various secret missions. Enter JOE, the bespectacled 9 year old adopted son of the genius Prof. Joe had lost both parent in a car accident when he was 12 months old. At the start of each episode Joe would enter the chair and the spinning arms would transfer the info direct into his brain, Once the transfer was complete, Joe would don a pair of 'electrode glasses' to trigger the new knowledge housed within him. Equipped with his armoury of gadgets, Joe undertakes a series of daring special missions. Various missions called upon him to become an expert racing driver, brain surgeon, astronaut, test pilot, aquanaut and computer boffin.
This was Gerry Anderson's ninth consecutive TV puppet series. You could say he was on a role. At the time it was slick, new, colourful and fun. I think even kids today would enjoy it.
And in case you are wondering why was the series called Joe 90? When Joe joined W.I.N. there were 89 London based agents in operation. Joe became the 90th - hence JOE 90

Review of Joe 90 - Complete Series (Box Set) (DVD)
Joe 90 ======
This really took me back, Joe 90 the kid super spy with amazing powers and those 'Michael Caine' glasses. Included here are all 30 episodes. Puppetry at its best. Professor Ian McClaine has invented a brain enhancer. It takes the form of a chair which the operative sits in and then he has whatever special information imprinted onto his brain. This information aids him in completing his secret missions. Joe is used because he is a kid ... ...James Bond. Joe would done his glasses and be off on his latest mission. He had all the state of the art spy devices and always completed his missions for the W.I.N. organisation, one way or another. Made from 1968 and 1969 by Gerry Anderson, who by now was on a role and could do no wrong, Joe 90 was another huge success. This was a super series to watch as a kid and as many programmes of the time completely inoffensive to all children. Highly recommended. ...
