A fable for the Nineties about a man who one night, suffers a crisis of morality, this is overall an effective piece of entertainment. Tom Cruise plays Jerry Maguire, a sports agent who decides to do more for his clients but when promptly tells the people with whom he works with about it, is invariably treated with fake applause and treated very quietly as a fool. It is only when he confronts Bob Sugar (a deliciously evil Jay Mohr) about his intentions, that his troubles start to get worse. Soon in a hilarious scene (and probably most discussed), he is forced in a race against time to save what remains of his clients. Of which in comes Rod Tidwell (a great performance from Cuba Gooding Jr.) which leads to him recruiting Dorothy Boyd (played by Renee Zellweger) into waht seems to be a doomed business venture when he seemingly has two clients, Rod and the new star player that is Frank Cushman (Jerry O’Connell). Soon things goes from bad to even worser and this sets up some nice highs and lows for Jerry. Enlivened by wonderful performances by Jonathon Lipnicki as Ray who grows to liking Jerry and Bonnie Hunt (as Dorothy’s sister) who constantly worries and frets over every detail. Certainly a very capable ‘date movie’ for some, this is very good stuff.
