John Berlin (Andy Garcia) is a big-city cop and, yes, that means he drinks a lot of coffee and has a terrible personal life (in this case, signified by a wife who just can't stop cheating on him). Leaving town to visit his understanding brother-in law and fellow detective Freddy Ross (Lance Henriksen), he promptly finds himself embroiled in the hunt for a serial killer with a grislymodus operandifor murdering blind women. As you might expect, it's not long before he's bumbling his way into a number of confrontations with the hick cops around him and an affair with Helena (Uma Thurman), the blind room-mate of one of the killer's victims.Slick and pacey,Jennifer 8throws out so many plot that it eventually winds up falling over them in its haste to get to the overblown climax. Nothing here makes a great deal of sense and yet, despite its inherent cosmic silliness, Robinson handles the suspense-and-relief routine with a flashy aplomb, and the cast do well in the face of the material's shortcomings. (John Malkovich's brief appearance is a redemptive highlight, even if you do have to wait almost 90 minutes for it). --Danny Leigh

8mm exhibits bad taste and may be shocking to most people, but to me it felt like a movie with serious intent, especially seen as though it tracks the descent of Tom Welles (Nicolas Cage), as the ordinary guy, into the nasty, immoral world of underground pornography. The character, understandably, is tormented, mentally, as he simply cannot accept why all the evil surrounding him exists.
Notoriously panned by critics upon its release, this was by no means a milestone in the career of Cage, even though I believe it to contain ones of his most powerful performances. This is a horror film that has seen a lot of poor reviews from the critics, as well as most of the public; however, I really enjoyed it!
The plot is as follows: a beautiful cheerleader, Jennifer, and her nerdy friend, Needy, go through life in small town America with a lot of differences but a strong friendship. When Jennifer is sacrificed by a band of satanists desperate for success, she comes back as a demon and uses her sexuality to lure men into a trap of death!
This is a horror, but it's also a tongue in cheek comedy. As a horror it does work, and there are four or five realky scary scenes. However, the real strength of the film is the comedy. The dialogue is really quirky and occasionally hilarious. For example, when a girl is stabbed in the chest, mortally wounded, she shouts "my tit!" This oddball speech is characteristic ...
