BEN’s RANT
Remember how Scream picked through many a horror movie cliché in its quest to be all clever and modern? Sure you do. Despite its clever “ironic” stance, one new rule is creeping into the genre that threatens to make the most patient of cinemagoers shout bloody murder. The mobile phone, or “cell phone” to the Americans. Whereas before, phone lines could be disconnected by axe wielding maniacs, or CB radios wrecked through the cunning theft of vital bits. Nowadays, such problems are null and void due to the fact that every f**ker has a Nokia in their back pocket. Right? Sorry, wrong answer, would you like to go for Double Jeopardy where the stakes could really change? Low battery. This car doesn’t have a cigarette lighter. I’m out of credit. Balls. You’re going on a long haul journey, so you remember to charge the phone and top it up before you leave. NO YOU DON’T BECAUSE YOU’RE A HALFWIT!
Okay, so the kids try to call for help, but Darryl’s cell phone is not charged up (see rant above). The truck passes by, eventually, and relief sets in. However, after a while, the pair pass an old church, with the old truck parked outside. Nearby, a strange figure is tossing bloodstained sacks into a pipe. Sacks that look distinctly body sized. Another nerve-shredding road rage attack later, and the pair find themselves run off the road. Darryl has a crisis of conscience, and convinces his sister that they should go back and help whoever is down the pipe.
Darryl’s Scooby gang antics lead him to a horrible discovery, which manages to raise more questions about the bizarre attacks. Fleeing the scene, the kids seek help at the nearest diner, but they’re already on the receiving end of some strange goings-on, which they must try to accept if they want to survive…
From here, the movie takes a step into territory that may not sit easy. The first half toys with your mind like a cat with a ball of string, and it won’t stop. This is a horror movie after all, and being rated 15 means that there are less visceral shocks and a great deal of headf**ks. For a good 45 minutes, there are jumps and unnerving imagery, but all executed in a subtle sense. There is then a step that for me worked like a charm, harkening back to the days when scary movies used their imagination as well as your own to good effect. The money shot doesn’t really occur until the last 10 minutes, and the nature of the beast isn’t shoved down your throat, but drip-fed to you s-l-o-w-l-y. The unexpected nature of the evil that has set itself on the teenagers is more shocking because you only get glimpses of it.
This was most probably the finest scary movie I have seen since Blair Witch or even Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo. I was so tense from the moment the old truck starts trying to mow the car full of teen-flesh down, I think I pulled a muscle in my leg. The cast being unknowns, you have no indication of their fate in relation to their star status. There is also a merciful lack of pumpin’ rock tracks to make this a “trendy” effort. Kudos is due to the studio to not let this get turned into a Blair Witch 2 of obviousness. If there is a sequel, then I’m keeping at least two of my fingers crossed they don’t balls it up with over the top set piece deaths and a token Marilyn Manson tune.
However, some of you are jaded, just admit it. You should therefore be aware of the following clichés that are rife in this production.
1. Those damn fool kids never learn. 2. Someone always knows more than they should. 3. No, it’s not dead. 4. Teenagers never listen to warnings, especially when freaked out. 5. The cops probably won’t make things any better. 6. When in a small town, people look at you like YOU’RE the killer.
The frustrating thing is, most of the time these clichés ruin a horror movie and make you wish you’d stayed in and watched the Channel 5 Shannon Tweed flick instead. Not here. There’s just something fresh about this film that made me edgier than a thin footed man called Mr Ed Gere on a tightrope above the Grand Canyon with a feather up his ass. It could well be the superb direction of Victor Salva, who uses some superb visuals to incredibly creepy effect. Most of the horror takes place in the dark, and is often silhouetted. This makes everything a lot less obvious, and therefore scarier.
The two newcomer leads are superb, never overacting (though Long’s wide eyed gawking may get tired). Phillips is reminiscent of Claire Forlani of Mallrats and Mystery Men fame – not a bad thing at all. The pair scream, run, panic and suffer very believably for such a film, to their credit. I for one hope they don’t meet the same non-stardom fate as the Blair Witch trio (hay, maybe they really DID die in those woods, and we’ve been fooled into watching some real snuff movie!? #@ CONSPIRACY!).
Some reviews have poo-pooed this as taking a turn too far after the initial stylish first half. I say to the nay-sayers – rubbish. This is far classier material than Who Cares What You Did Last Summer or Urban Leg Ends. The ending is as abrupt as Blair Witch, but the entire product pleases to the point of me wanting to rush back and see the whole thing again. There are no loose ends, and a dark fairy tale sensibility runs through the proceedings, making this a cut (HA HA!) above the rest. Not for the delicate hearted amongst you, this will stay in your head longer than similar efforts. And if it doesn’t, you can come see me and I’ll apologise.
Advantages: Ummm..... it's okay Disadvantages: Not scary, predictable
I was aware that the general opinion was that the film was a disappointment but a film with the name Francis Ford Coppola associated with it still had to be worth a try. The film was certainly watchable, the performances natural and not cheesy and their were even some humorous moments but at the end of the day it didn't provide scare value, which was what I was there for. Jeepers Creepers was a phenomenal success at the box office in this country – more so than in the US. It was lauded as the scariest horror film to be produced by America in recent years – a potentially valid claim, albeit one that would not be hard to achieve. I was expecting something innovative and fresh, and whilst I wasn’t entirely disappointed with this film, I’m afraid Jeepers Creepers leaves a ... ...core of a horror movie, Jeepers Creepers fails to get past the standard scenes and actions that have become so tired in Hollywood shockers. Teenagers discover something rather unpleasant in the woods, find that their cell phone doesn’t work (in the old days the phone lines would have been down) and then throw logic and reason out of the window from thereon in. Let’s face it – how many people would actually have returned to the scene ...

Now this is not so much a spoiler, as believe me, if I don’t make it my personal duty to warn you about watching this film and try and get you to watch it I really would merit the term spoiler – spoiler of trust/integrity/honesty/enjoyment - the list could go on.

Advantages: Solid plot development, gets on with it Disadvantages: Comical element reduces the impact

I recommend watching this, whether or not you have seen the first film. It is not necessary to have seen the first. I suppose it would help, but there is nothing stopping you enjoying and understanding this any more than someone who has seen the first one before. DVD Description
A brother and sister on spring break from college decide to take the scenic route home--an endless, desolate stretch of road through central Florida. Along the way they are run off the road by a strange truck, and later they see its driver disposing of what looks like a human body down a drainpipe near an old church. Derry (Justin Long) convinces his older sister, Trish (Gina Philips), that they have to investigate, and despite all better judgment, they do. That's just the beginning of this wild horror film, directed by Victor Salva (POWDER). Salva keeps the audience guessing by never settling into any particular style or formula. The film veers gleefully in all directions, referencing such classics as NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, and even THE TERMINATOR, along the body-strewn way. There is no shortage of clever humour amid the shocks, gross-outs, and nail-biting suspense, and Philips and Long exhibit a refreshingly believable brother-sister rapport. The supporting cast includes Patricia Belcher as a psychic and Eileen Brennan as an eccentric cat owner. Francis Ford Coppola is the executive producer.
