recorded, a timeless record of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. Bert Stern recreates the look and style of his acclaimed still photographs into his own motion picture documenting some of the stunning images of live jazz ever brought to the silver screen. Photographed like an Impressionist painting, Stern let the artist and the people who attended Newport 1985 do the talking.
Dayreveals. This 75-minute film captures an event poised on the cusp of a new era, as the cool jazz of Jimmy Guiffre and the effortless scat of Anita O'Day intermingle with the hard bop of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and the smouldering fusion overtones of the Chico Hamilton Quintet. There's a crisp contribution from Chuck Berry, a typically feel-good set from Louis Armstrong--including a hilarious duo with Jack Teagarden--and, as evening shades into night, a heartfelt performance from Mahalia Jackson, closing with a melting rendition of "The Lord's Prayer". Bert Stern has assembled all these and more into a satisfying sequence, complete with footage of an enthusiastic and informal audience. Shots of the yachting line-up from the America's Cup round out a blissful and what now seems blissfully naïve occasion. On the DVD:Colour picture quality has worn well, whereas sound has deteriorated notably at times: Thelonius Monk's quarter-tones could easily be a semitone flat! Even so, it's worth putting up with this to enjoy a tour through music-making whose relaxed spontaneity would be impossible to emulate today. --Richard Whitehouse

Advantages: Original script.Fantastic performances.entertaining and charming Disadvantages: Not for average rom-com lovers
...I have been waiting for this since I saw its trailer after it has gone to several film festivals.Being a lover of lovey dovey films, i was sure i won't be let down by this film! Though i must say,it turned out to be more than what i expected-a rather honest depiction of today's romance. Gone are the days when a boy meets girl, fall in love, get married and live happily ever after.
The narrator warns us in his funny voice that this is not a love story and it actually is much more than that. I loved the way the film progresses, the director chose to make it interesting by showing us the days in the bracket,1 being the day he first met her.The film doesn't move chronologically but is rather random, jumbling from forward to backward at times.
Summer is the new assitant of Tom's boss and he likes her from the first day.Its a modern take...

...A History of Jazz just has got to be one of the most comprehensive programmes on the history of jazz that I have ever come across.
It is subtitled Bluesland A portrait In American Music. It shows the very heavy Blues influence on the original forms of jazz.
The first section is called: Everybody got the Blues. It starts with a haunting Blues refrain, as the camera look along some railroad tracks to some plaintive blues music. The camera then shows some typical scenes of life in the south of America. A steam train, black people working on the farms and playing and singing the blues.
Then, comes the introduction to the programme, proper, by the host, Keith David, with Albert Murray and Robert Palmer.
Keith David points out that everyone gets the blues, and that everyone develops methods of coping with the blues. His favourite...
