I am going to assume most readers of this have seen this film already so here follows a brief plot synopsis for the two people in the country who haven't seen it.
The holiday resort of Amity Island is terrorised by a great white shark, the town politicians want to ignore the this fact as it will kill off the summer trade that Amity thrives on. Chief Martin Brody who has relocated from New York City has no illusions about the problem and must enlist the help of a shark expert and a seasoned old shark hunter to track the beast down.
Jaws is my favourite film of all time, it is of great significance to me as the Head In The Boat scene made me utter the F word in front of my parents for the first time.
Everything about it is perfect, characterisation, plot, tension, drama, there is nothing in the film that can be improved upon.
Spielberg as second time director never puts a foot
wrong in a film that plays out like a string of classic movie moments....the head in the boat, the first attack at night, Alex Kitner gets eaten in broad daylight, the head in the boat, the Indianapolis speech and that final 'Explosive' showdown between Brody and the shark.
Jaws was the first film ever to make $100 Million at the box office, it was the first ever summer event movie. If you ever go to see those summer blockbuster movies like Spiderman, Men In Black, Independance Day........they all owe a debt to Jaws as the may never have been made without this film.
Now you probably may already have this movie in the form of the 25th Anniversary Edition so why fork out again for the 30th?
Well for starters the film has been remastered for optimal sound and vision, it looks and sounds even better than it did first time around in theatres.
Secondly there is a two 150 minute documentary on the second disc, owners of the previous DVD edition will recognise parts of this doc as it appeared in a heavily edited form on that disc. However in that heavily cut down form it only skimmed the surface of how one of the greatest films ever was made.
This doc on the new edition goes far more in depth into the making of the film than i ever imagined it would which to me was this boys dream come true.
Everything is covered from the screenplay and its many versions, how all the cast came together, the hazards of filming on the water, how the film went over budget due to the rubber shark not working and bad weather, through to audieence reaction in the theatres which was nothing short of hysterical.
It also goes in depth behind how certain classic scenes were made such as th INdianapolis speech made by Quint. The speech was re written three times, lastly by Robert Shaw himself (who plays Quint) the result being one of the greatest monologues in movie history.
There is a fantastic segment on the disc where Richard Dreyfuss reveals he was completely riveted by the speech Shaw delivered (watch the speech again but pay close attention to Dreyfusses expression in the background to see what I mean.
There is also a fabulous piece on the famous theme tune, when Spielberg heard composer John Williams play it for the first itme he thought it was a windup prank.
Williams explains why the theme was so effective, how he could adjust the pitch and tempo of the theme to suit what was happening on screen. And how that it represent the shark itself, the theme was an unstoppable driving force representing primal instinct devoid of any emotion or logic, it is a perfect aural representation of the beast it potrays.
Also on the disc are the deleted scenes, trailers and interactive shark facts segment which were all included on the previous edition. But the new documentary reallly adds the value and makes this an essential purchase even if you own the first 25th Anniversary edition.
If you are passionate about film this DVD edition has to be on your shelf it is more than just a film. I
t represents so much, how the summer film was made, it was the first time a movie entered the public conciousness so deeply.
Dialogue was lifted from the movie to be used in everyday lexicons, how many times have we heard someone utter the (ad libbed) line "you're gonna need a bigger boat" when faced with insurmountable odds.
It ushered in a new filmaking era, inspired many of todays young filmakers to pick up a camera and have a go themselves.
It made us terrified of the water, and more importantly for me, ignited my passion for cinema, it litrerally shaped the way I look at films in a way no other movie has come close to doing before or after.
