In 1975 a film was released which put people off ever going onto the beach at their local sea side town for years. Jaws, was a phenomenal hit for Steven Spielberg in the summer of ’75 that a sequel was certain. The flick won 3 oscars, golden globes, grammy awards and more, and was a huge box office success (it got $7,061,513 in it’s opening weekend).
So in 1978 the sequel was made. Going for the unimaginative title of Jaws 2, Spielberg declined to direct the shark’s monstrous return. Instead it was directed by a French man by the name of Jeannot Szwarc, whom other director credits include enigma, supergirl, kojak, and others. But at the time of release, he was relatively unknown.
The sequel takes off about 3 or 4 years after the shark attack, and is based back on Amity island. Chief Brody is still in the police force, and is still sceptical of the sea because of the events which unfolded in the first flick. The killing starts at the very beginning with the first scene being Jaws slaughtering two underwater photographers. The killings that slowly ensue aren’t manic, and like in the first film, are deemed as anything but shark attacks, but Chief Brody knows betters. It is with sheer horror then as a survivor of a shark attack tells the police and town of the giant shark, and realise that there is a sailing group out at sea in the prime area of the shark whom need to be rescued. The real kick in the teeth for chief Brody is that both his kids are on that expedition and are in grave danger! And so begins a daring rescue, and a hell of a fight to kill the shark once and for all.
The actors are well cast in this flick, with a lot of the original cast returning from the first Jaws movie. Roy Schieder returns to the role of the melancholy Chief Brody, who is very brooding (oh the irony!). He executes the role very well, and although he isn’t the most natural actor to grace God’s green earth, he does come across as the right guy for the role. Although if I did have to say anything negative about him it would probably be the way he says his lines which I felt were a bit half hearted at times, but I blame the script for being the main culprit of that. In the other roles all the actors seemed well suited, although there was no standout performance by any of them. The casting was well done, and again is a big help to the film’s success. Please see below the review for cast list.
The special effects in this film are quite a step up compared to the first one, although at times it hasn’t aged well. In Jaws due to technical difficulties the shark appeared in very few scenes at all, this is not the case in the sequel as the shark appears in all the murder scenes and quite a lot of the other supporting scenes. The shark itself is very obviously fake, but at the same time very scary looking and quite horrible. If anyone reading this has been on the Jaws ride at Universal Studios in Florida, I’m sure they will be able to relate to this fear. The dummy is really scary! Not many other special effects are used, but it is from the 1970’s and considering this fact, fares quite well.
The soundtrack to the film, although not as strong as the original film’s, is good. The infamous “duh-da-duh-da” Jaws tune is of course included, as well as some other classical scores to help emphasis the difference between the calm exterior of the sea and the gory depths it really has. John Williams headed the musical composistion, who did the original Jaws movie and tonnes of other very famous films. The music department in this film is good.
The suspense in this film is, in my humble opinion, the film’s greatest asset. Much like the first film, the suspense grows very slowly as the mixture of the infamous creepy music and underwater shots lead to some great scenes. The feeling of anxiety is really well developed, and is some of the best you will see in any horror films, and had me feeling the most nervous I had felt about a film for a long time. The use of music, camera shots and the long drawn out sequences really do lead to some chair squirming moments.
Now for the big question; Did Jaws really need a sequel? In a word, No. Jaws didn’t need a sequel at all. It was a very strong film by itself, and would have probably had the same legacy as it does without the other 3 flicks. However, the sequel has happened and although some critics would say it’s a kind of rehash of the original it still serves as a good film, and in my opinion is different enough from the first to make it worth owning both the first two Jaws movies. The film would be easy to pick up even for people who hadn’t seen the first, and I think people who had seen the first would not feel like they were watching the some film they had seen before, again. The action is well spread out over just 2 hours, and the production is exactly how you would it to be. This is possibly one of the strongest sequels ever, although that is not saying much I know. This is a good film, and worth watching when the opportunity arises.
Jaws 2 is available on DVD (which I got in the Virgin Mega store Sales for only £4.99) and also VHS. It is certificate PG, because of slight bad language and mild horror.
Favourite Quotes of the film:
Martin Brody: I think we've got another shark problem. Mayor Larry Vaughn: Are you serious? Martin Brody: You bet I'm serious.
Martin Brody: Do you think that if one shark was killed, that another shark could... Dr. Elkins: Sharks don't take things personal Mr. Brody!
Martin Brody: I know what a shark looks like. I've seen one up close. And you better do something about this one, because I don't intend to go through that hell again!

Jaws 2 is of course the sequel to Jaws. It was supposed to be 4 years between Jaws and Jaws 2, and just like the first time around, a great white wreaks havoc on Amity Island. The police chief, Scheider, tries to close the beaches down again as it is the tourist season again. Just as with Jaws though, the mayor doesn’t want to cause any disruptions and chooses to ignore Scheider. You can guess the rest for yourself.

Jaws was named The Teeth of the Sea in France, so you would think that Jaws 2 would be named The Teeth of the Sea 2 right? Wrong!!! When you add the Deux to the end of the title in French it makes it mean The Teeth of the Sh*t, so they had to rename it again. Sequles usually take the path of bigger is better and Jaws 2 is no different, heading down the exact same path. Of course, the biggest difference is that as the shark was rarely seen in Jaws, ... ...Jaws 2 takes place 4 whole years after the events in the first, Amity Island is a peaceful place again except in the holidays when it is a large tourist attraction, they've even built a new hotel. ...to be the thinking behind Jaws 2, a virtual carbon copy of the first film that so terrified mobiegoers the world over.
Roy Schieder is back as Chief Brody in order to complete his contract with the studio and even he seems bored by this remake - the ideas, the shocks, the plot - you've seen it all beofer and it is now parodying iteself.

...to go back in the water!
A bit of a cheesy tagline for what is a pretty cheesy sequel to the awesome "Jaws".
The basic plot is that it's 3 or 4 for years since Amity has been terrorised by the Great White shark and some divers are looking at the wreck of "The Orca" which sank at the end of the first film. Of course, what else should be lurking down there but another shark! A picture of the shark is taken in the panic of the attacks, and the ... ...a shark is out there again. Typically nobody including the Mayor (Murray Hamilton) believes him when he shows them the rather dark, sketchy photo, or at least if they do, they're still more concerned about profits from the tourists, especially as the town is just getting on its feet after the last shark problem. Ellen Brody (Lorraine Gray) of course stands by her man.
Throw in some teenage victims, the Brody sons in danger, a killer whale which ...

Advantages: Michael Caine Disadvantages: Everything else
after having so much tragedy is an interesting one. However, this is not enough to keep this film going - it's silly and often boring in places. According to this much of the plot of "Jaws 3" didn't happen either! I don't even think Michael's and Sean's old jobs at Sea World are even mentioned. Dennis Quaid played Michael in the third film and he did well to keep out of this one!
There is still the odd shocking, scary scene in this but it's not worth it. You can buy this on a DVD containing "Jaws2" and "Jaws 3" as well for about £8 so at least it's not costing a lot.
Caine did this film purely for the money as did the rest of the cast, I expect and it shows. Director Joseph Sargent is mainly a TV director and he should have stuck to that. Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves, quite frankly. ...
Advantages: Remastered, plenty of extra's Disadvantages: n/a
This latest repackage of the classic Stephen Spielberg film is a must for its fans. The film itself is untouched other than being digitally remastered but the extras are well worth the money for the disc.
A 50 minute documentary "The Making of Jaws" is an interesting insight into the problems during production, i.e., the Technicians strike and the creature not working. There is also talk of a scene that was deemed too violent at the time but which would make it into a certificate 12 film today.
Included also are the obligatory deleted scenes, outtakes, cast & filmaker notes and trailers. There are 720 photos which were taken during filming plus the production notes which are detailed as follows:
1) Story Board and Drawings
2) Production Photo
3) Marketing Material
4) The Jaws phenomenon

Am surprise the DVD version of Jaws is Impressive. It has a great Widescreen Transfer 2.35:1 and Incredible Dolby Digital 5.1 Soundtrack. DVD has good extras:A 60 minutes documentary(Actually the 1995 Laserdisc Version was 2 Hours!), different kinds of traliers are more. But some of the Deleted Scenes are fun to watch and the another scenes are joyless. Too bad, there are not much of Outtakes. DVD could have used a isolated music score or audio commentary on anyone, who`s working on the film. That could have been a fun plus.
The film still holds up for twenty five years, a great looking shark in the movie. Great performances by Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss. The film has some mistakes near the last 10 minutes like the scene, where Dreyfuss is inside the cage and the shark is actually small(Some scenes, they used ...
