FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC (1987)
DVD (2005)
I should avoid watching films of books that I have enjoyed!
Well in this case I certainly should.
I can remember back, gosh must be nearly thirty years now, reading the book ?Flowers in The Attic?, by Virginia Andrews.
I was utterly enthralled and had to stay up until 4.00 in the morning as there was no way I could sleep until I had finished the book.
So when I saw the DVD of the film on sale at Amazon for around £2, I snapped it up.
I sat down with a bottle of wine and much anticipation, only to be left feeling cheated and disappointed.
This review is written from the view of someone who has read, and loved, the book, maybe someone watching the DVD as a ?Flowers Virgin? may well enjoy it.
JUST WHAT IS ?FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC??
The book was a best ...
Advantages: Decent performances and some witty remarks. Disadvantages: It's very derivative and predictable.
. Strident flutes and chimes over piano undertones show Tom LeFroy as a different and more daring order of person. Playful woodwinds suggest the nature of the relationship between Tom and Jane. Chamber music is employed during the dances. And then Johnston goes overboard with schmaltzy piano and strings when things come to a head, overturning the ending into unbearable mawkishness.
?Becoming Jane? is a romantic comedy in an empire line dress. It will doubtless annoy Austen purists by fiddling with the facts, ruthlessly pillaging her novels for characters and casting an American in the lead. But it really isn?t that bad ? it is a perfectly serviceable exponent of the genre. However, the workmanlike direction, meandering pace and derivative writing make it bland and predictable. I suspect it will suit DVD better than the big screen, as it has ...
Advantages: None that I can think of. Disadvantages: Many - read the review.
Before I start: I'm reviewing the video (so there'll be nothing about special features, etc. - just the film)
Tarzan is one of those stories most people know (or at least know a version of it) or are at least familiar with. The story I know is the Disney version - Tarzan is raised by gorillas then meets Jane and falls in love with her. You know, it's one of those lovey dovey stories (although there is a lot of action in it - remember it's animated though, don't get your hopes up). Anyway, I spotted the sequal in Oxfam and it's a film I don't have. Since all the videos in the shop are 3 for £1.00 just now I decided just to buy it and see what it's like. I'm afraid to say I was very disappointed by it. It was a waste of money (although I'm not going to complain about 33p).
There were many things I didn't like about it. For a start it ...
